Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I didn't have a PPI carried out and took the guy at his word that it had been checked out, serviced etc but boy did I get a shock when I took it to a respected Indy in the North West to be checked over a couple of weeks later.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi guys I am seriously considering a 996 as my first foray into 911 ownership. I really want a 993 but the combination of cost and age is putting me off. I did have an Audi RS2 but the costs were ridiculous and I am fed up with it - I'd rather have something that is at least slightly reliable! I have seen a 2001 C2 Cab at JZM with a new engine in May 2009 (warranty until May 2011) which looks tempting. I am not sure whether a 3.4 is the way to go or a 3.6. I prefer the look of the gen 2 cars but is there a discernible difference? I have an Audi S3 at the moment with only 31,600 miles so my mileage is not horrendous but my next purchase would have to be a daily driver. I have read up a bit about JZM in the magazines, it all seems pretty good but i know that magazines would rather NOT print at all than print negative points due to advertising revenue. Does anyone have any experience (good or bad?) you can PM me if you rather. Any advice is welcome - please help!

POST 2Original post

Hi and welcome. I bought my first 911 in Sept (996 C4S) and haven't stopped smiling since (or looking over my shoulder whenever I walk away from it...) IMHO the 3.6 is more desirable and buy the best you can afford regarding condition of the car and history. There appears to be huge divisions between the 993 brigade and 996/7 (in fact anyone that doesn't have a 993  ) but the 996 would appear to be a much better bet for a daily drive. There may be someone along soon with a different opinion though, naturally!! I know from this forum that JZM are very highly regarded but have no experience of them myself.

POST 3Original post

You are following five months behind me on the same decision process. All I can add to your current thinking is that though the 3.6 seems to be the more reliablle engine, most of the troubles with the 3.4 are far behind them. It appeared to me that residuals on the Cab are lower than on the Coupe so you should be able to get a newer / lower mileage one. It took me those five months to get mine. I enjoyed the search, but I am enjoying the 911 even more

POST 4Original post

Hi and welcome. Part 1  I was also in your position just before Christmas when I bought a 1998 3.4L from a sole trader advertised in Autotrader, what a mistake..... I didn't have a PPI carried out and took the guy at his word that it had been checked out, serviced etc but boy did I get a shock when I took it to a respected Indy in the North West to be checked over a couple of weeks later. Let's just say the car was a nightmare and some weeks later the guy agreed to take the car back but at a significant cost to me (solicitors now involved). Part 2  Bought a 2003 3.6L Coupe from a well respected Indy last week and I haven't stopped smiling yet. Had all the relevent checks carried out beforehand, car serviced and highlighted remedial repairs carried out (only minor), warranty negotiated on the car = one very happy P owner My advise from all of this would be to take your time and get the car properly checked out beforehand (PPI, talk to previous owners etc.), don't be too frightened by all the horror stories on this and other forums and then enjoy. Hope this helps.
