I just got my
987.2
earlier this year, been streeting and tracking it and for the most part I love it
But the steering rack is too slow, and also has a nonlinear feel at around 45-60 degrees of steering wheel angle. I would *really* love to have a quicker, preferably linear steering rack. Is such available from
Porsche
or the aftermarket?
Thanks
Have a look at the
987.2 Cayman
R rack...
Hmmm, I'm finding the same part number for R as base
cayman
: 987-347-011-05
Interesting. Some (though not all) reviews at the time the R was released talked about the steering ratio being 10% quicker...2.5 turns lock to lock. Maybe the same rack but different parts that control the variable-ratio power steering? If there's a
Porsche
dealer close by, maybe stop in at the parts counter and determine what parts are R only?
Yeah, could be shorter leverage arm to the uprights. But really I wouldn't be interested in 10% quicker throughout, really want something like 14:1 linear. The immediate response to steering inputs in my BRZ is one thing I miss a lot when I get in the
Cayman
. And I'm definitely not a fan of the weird nonlinear sensation around 45 degrees steering input. There don't appear to be any practical options to correct this though
Honestly this could be the difference between keeping the
Cayman
vs. keeping the BRZ.
I am sure you looked at the suspension and alignment to help speed up turn in, like 6 minutes of toe out in front. You will need solid monoball and thrust puck LCA's (Tarett Cup LCA's f&r) to keep the front from wondering around over bumps, even bumpsteer toe arms f&r due to lowering. However, with wider
tires
, like RE71R's 255/35/18 or Hoosier A7's same size, this alignment setup really speeds up the tire reaction to your input. I run a 9 inch wheel in front to assure the side walls have plenty of support. I have not had any problems running the slalom sections of the course, even when they are 7 features long and different distances between the cones. Just saying that there are other ways to speed up the steering.
I'm OK with initial turn-in response at the track, I don't think I want or need any front toe-out. I'd just like a faster ratio and less steering angle required, even for normal driving in town on the street. And also the nonlinearity of the stock rack is something I also notice at 2-3/10ths street driving as well. Pretty sure what I want is quicker-ratio linear rack. But not finding any options...
