They are great cars (if a little too easy to drive) I would highly recommend you take one out for a test drive on the roads you plan to use the car on.

Not hard if there is a big enough offer on the table
The Cayman R is very desirable at the moment, I've recently had 3 ppl off pistonheads asking me when I'm selling mine!
There's always 8-10 available on here, I've been looking at them for a while. They seemed to hit £40k and have stayed put for ages now. I've no idea whether they will go up in time or down but my dilemma is £40k also buys a 997.1 turbo which was a childhood bedroom wall poster dream. Decisions decisions........

Looking for a White, Red or Peridot Cayman R, with PCM.
Anyone selling up any time soon?? PM me!!
Cant help with the search I'm afraid but I am curious as to why you want one.
What will you use the car for? Daily driving duties or weekend warrior?
I only ask because the Cayman R may not be the car for you (it wasn't for me) When I test drove one a while back I found it lacking in so many areas (especially power) so I bought a GT3 instead.
There are lots of Cayman R fanboys on here though, don't let them swing you into buying a car that is wrong for your planned usage.

Been to see that one..........fairly significant damage/chip to the rear quarter.......first and only service was done 18 months late......and I'm fairly sure it was a PEC demonstrator for 18 months before the last owner bought it.....

I'm not interest in a 911 at all really.
I've been watching the classifieds and most of the cars listed started at speculative figures of £42k-£45k and nearly all have retraced back to £40k or below.
The red car linked above was £43k a month or so ago.
The red car at Redline was £45k and is now £41k
There's a Peridot car that was £39.5k and is now £38.5k......
I'm prepared to pay good money for a good car, I just can't find one!!

I see what you did there ;-)
The thing is the car works for Daily driving duties or weekend warrior !
the luggage space is hugh, the weekend warrior works, and you can use it every day no issue, it's a fully usable Road sports car in the low tax band and can do 30mpg on that week end trip away.
None of this race car for the road b
ks which is so far from the truth it pains me.
Lack of power ! that's a tough one, the cars >250bhp/ton and a 10 second 100mph car, may be on the back Spa straight you could do with more :-)
with people saying the basic cars are now too fast for the road, the R has plenty of power and of course reaches is peak torque 1500 rpm lower than other so called cars which I call accessable power :-) The GT3 is NOT a fast car, a Turbo is a fast car , a GTR is a fast car, the GT3 bar the 991 GT3 is not really a fast car in that respect of wanting a really fast car.
So please do better and come up with some valid points to help buyers (put off buyers) because that was just a fail and just stinks of my GT3 posts ;-)
But instead of name calling and telling you to leave or worse personal abuse, I thought it best to back up what was said in a normal matter.
I also don't mind the fanboy comment, I am a fan of the car and male. Cannot work out why "fanboy upsets other insecure people"
My girlfriend would also say I was a car "fanboy"
"A (usually, male) fan who is obsessive about a particular subject"

I wasn't speaking to you, the question was for the OP.
It's a CC of my GT3 posts, let's not even pretend it's anything else.
The difference is, I'll back up both sides of the story, :-)
I don't mind it, as I will not resort in name calling or even get tired of it, but will just repost and ask for the reason some one would say what they have said.
The R has quite a few issues, mostly for track work it is lacking in quite a few area's, but on the road you are going to have to come up with a better line for putting people off. saying that every thing I would change on the R for track people also change on the GT3.

Nice toy for the weekend
They are great cars (if a little too easy to drive) I would highly recommend you take one out for a test drive on the roads you plan to use the car on. I think bucket seats are sought after but they don't suit all body types. Also, I would (personally) ignore all cars without air conditioning as the weight saving is negligible but the impact on driver and passenger comfort is huge.
Also, without air con you may have trouble selling the car in the future!

Thanks!
My only must have is PCM, everything else is up for debate to be honest! I'd prefer a white car, black spyders, aircon, buckets, SS, PSE but I'm flexible on all of the above.
There was a manual Peridot car at Glasgow OPC that was almost perfect, but no PCM. I know insisting on PCM probably isn't for the purists, but I want it!!

Have you seen this one?

Also, have you contacted the independents like JZM, 911v and RSJ etc to ask them to source you one? Could be worth a try.

I would say a GT3 is easier to drive,(and I have many reasons why I think this, which I can list if you like) but I am interested to hear why you think a Cayman is easier to drive.
serious question btw.

Yep, no PCM!
You might be right about the independents........
they never pop up at the main indies I find, or if they do they are sold In a day.
Most are SOR
you are better off putting your name with a few OPC's, many cayman R owners will part ex their cars for a GT4 come Feb/March
this will either drive up prices of the R if the GT4 is not as good as people want, or at least stay stable as for £40k nothing to touch them.
I see the R as a slow burner in price, a bit like the 964RS was, it will be a great sort after car one day... but today it's a bargin.
I wish I could keep mine, but I am going to take the GT4 risk, or I might defer my name on the OPC list for a 2016 car yet...
Just spoke to RSJ who said they don't have anything currently, although they sold a yellow car in the summer....which seems to be this car;
http://www.drive24.co.uk/hertfordshire/VehicleDeta...
A bit of googling, confirms that it's this car;
http://www.imcdb.org/vehicle_418535-Porsche-Cayman...
Being drifted around a track by the TV programme Fifth Gear.........lol
It also seems to be this car;
http://motorcloud.net/2011-cayman-r-driving-event/
Which is at the PEC? Which leads me to the conclusion that it was one of the Demo cars at PEC and has probably had a hard life!!
Anyway, called the owner and it has no PCM or aircon..............the searcch continues!

I thought the air con missing on my lads would be a real issue, but actually it hasn't proven to be that big a deal over the couple of years he had it now.
Maybe if it was used as regularly as a rainy morning fogged up DD or mid summer motorway queue attendee I'd think differently
As an enthusiastic driver weekender / track / sports car it's right up there imo.
I don't quite understand the easy to drive comment either, unless it's a nod toward the "only driving gods can handle a GT3/911 - properly" mantra lol.
Re the seats I was in a 991 GT3 at a trackday recently and I think they are identical aren't they?
and for those interested in doing so, bung a bit more hp, change brakes and geometry and they hang with the big boys on track easily.

What I meant by 'easy to drive' is the car is so competent and composed that it's very easy to get the best out of it straight away. That's great if you want to jump in and go 10/10ths as there are no nasty surprises to worry about but its not what everyone wants.
Yes it is quite easy on A and B roads to be casually doing 30mph above what you might do in any ordinary car, only realising when you look down at the dash.
good luck putting a novice in a R and driving 10/10th lol
this is a joke must be.
A mid engine car will bite you easier and quicker than the rear engine GT3, the GT3 also gives you greater traction, where the R you have to ease out the bends.
The corner speed is higher in the R so you also need more balls to even take it to 10/10ths and of course you can brake later in the R again needing more balls.
The GT3 is more slow in fast out use the traction, repeat.... and if it does let go the GT3 is more progressive imo and has no PSM to F**k you over (or PSM off is off)
I was drifting off round about on my way home in the GT3 , I still don't do that in the Cayman, it's no where near as easy to control if it goes tits up.
the stories of the 911 is hard to drive were from the lift off over steer uncatchable days, those are long gone.

I am not into Chris Harris drifting, I am more about A to B speed, but having fun doing it, ie not in a turbo 4WED, been there done that.
If you want a drift car buy a M3

Totally agree with this. Try driving a Cayman/Boxster in the wet without ESP and it's going to end in tears for many of us.
Drove the Spyder and 6RS back to back today and the Spyder is so much easier to get out of shape.
Agree, as soon as you loose control of the car (Cayman) it will be tough to bring it back on the road. This because center of gravity is basically on top of driving axle, so you cannot use/play-with the power to balance the car and put it back on the road.
Confirmed by my consultant in Silverstone that clearly said 911 is easier to control on huge oversteer manouvre.
Although Cayman is far away more balanced so more difficult to put it on critical oversteer.
All that because I was spinning continously during the rear slide test (wet), to be fair at speed higher than 20 mph and closed eyes (as per his request/recommendation lol
)

You'll have to be pushing harder towards the limit in the RS to get it out of shape this is true, but ffs make sure your on your toes as it all happens very very very quickly regardless of circumstance.

The owner of that car is a PH'er and it was offered to me for what he PX'd it for, unfortunately I was still trying to get my GTS order changed for December delivery (which suddenly became February once my spec was applied to the build slot!!) so my dithering mean't I missed out!!
Awsome Cayman R at Cameron sports cars .
Deposit taken already.
Great price for the spec and great investment some lucky person has bought a great motor.
Anyone?

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2014...
Trust me, if it's advertised anywhere, I've seen it!
I've got email alerts coming out of my ears!
Spoken to Kees @ Paragon and it doesn't have PSE, called Porsche Solihull and they quoted £2,288 to retro fit it....no Porsche warranty either making it a very expensive car if I wanted to get the PSE fitted and warranty added......
Was just thinking that there might be someone mulling over selling car and wanted to avoid a dealers low ball offer!
The right car is out there and ahppy to pay £40k+ for the right one, just impatient waiting for it!

Yup, I bought it. I was looking for a similar spec to you but even more picky on colour and I wanted climate control. I had decided I had to have PCM but when the Glasgow car came up it was a good spec otherwise and when I saw it, it was mint. Deal was done (after 10 days of haggling). Do I wish it had PCM.... yes and no. The Gen 1 Cayman interior without it looked terrible IMHO but the Gen 2 with the screen looks OK. The universal audio interface with USB would have been great, but I just bought a little bluetooth receiver and plugged it into the AUX port - streams music from my phone perfectly. Anyway, I digress. Good luck with your hunt. I'm sure you'll love it when you find one. I've not been able to drive mine in the dry yet even but I'm already loving it.

Congrats, looked a great car! I was on the phone to them within minutes of the advert going live and would have been on a same day plane if they'd said "yes it has PCM"!!
I must have PCM.
I really want the PSE. But for the right deal i could live without it and add it later.
I'm not entirely fussed over other things like buckets, air con or other things.
Mileage/price isn't really an issue as long as the spec and price is in line.
Feel like I'm searching for Unicorn poo!!

Always worth getting what you want with a car. If I were you I'd hold out for the PSE, for my money it adds ot the experience. Same for the buckets. Not the seats for the larger gentleman, but I much prefer them to the 'normal' seats. Hope you find something with all the toys you want.

Roughly, what should a decent spec manual Cayman R (2011 / 24k miles / 5 months OPC warranty) be advertised privately for?
very good question I am going to ask £42k for mine with 19k miles on it and hugh spec, PCM ,Full leather, PSE, SS, Bose , Buckets, Spyder wheels, Sports crono
But I do have a list of people to email to offer the car as loads of people ask me when am I selling it inc. the previous owner again :-).
Still scared to sell it....
Never thought private over dealer price as the cars are what they are and the prices are what they are depending on spec.
I always try and buy private so I can meet and chat to the owner, dealers cars are just bought in and NO history is pasted on. invoiced are normally binned etc.

It is hard to guage as the well spec'd cars seem to sell very quickly. £42k was around what I was thinking, just in two minds whether to decide a price and advertise now, or hang on until the GT4 is annouced.

going by how many people were without a car when the 991 GT3 came along, I am keeping my R as long as possible,
OPC could say your car will be here April you sell up and you have no sports car for summer 2015.
42 / 43 k is the going rate for a good example with a good spec even seem the same at opc for 45 plus for the right car.
They are awsome cars and rare as with any limited model they command more than the average run of the mill.
When i bought mine i had a small option list of 6 wants i had to have the mint car i found had 5 of those options sometimes you have to be a little flexable buyer used otherwise you might never buy one.
The one i got had lowish mileage 10 k at the time
Man box
Buckets
Spyder wheels
Chrono
Pse
That the 5 out of the 6 it was such a nice car i bought it it has a couple of other options black painted wheels centre caps
Alcantara steering wheel a couple of other option that slip my mind at moment.
The Cayman. R is an awsome Porsche .
Ps mines not for sale its taken me ages to find the right Porsche and i have had over a dozen models including a couple of 996 GT3 s
Just do it they are a great drivers car for the road and look to be a great investment buy one now before they rocket like so many limited editions.
I made the mistake of p/x mine just over a year ago with approx. 8k for £36.5k
Should have just kept on to it and probably would have made some £ on it too!
Had many nice options too
Basalt
Spyder wheels partially black
Buckets
Manual
Short shift
PSE
Sport Chrono
LSD (Can't remember if std. now)
Tracker
Alcantara wheel / arm rest with crest
Sound package plus
Phone prep
Rear wiper
Rear park sensors
Maybe a few other bits whichI cant remember now
I wonder which lucky person owns it now? Anyone on here? It maybe the only one with PSE and black exhaust tips (got retro-fitted to get rid of the sooted up chrome look)
Picked mine up today...
Hopefully popping up to Oulton tomorrow to watch a few hours of RS day, will get some decent miles on it then and see what it's all about

C U tomorrow :-)
Is there a CR owners thread on here that I've missed?
We should get one going for general updates, questions, photos etc.
Rather than clogging up this thread about finding them for sale....

That looks just like mine!
I've been in the US for a week, best go and check that she's still in the garage :-)

Yeah, yeah - you just want a CR owners' thread because you own one now ;-)

They do look best in red, Chris de Burgh was right on this one.
I'm running a GT2 register linked from my profile, would be happy to get one up and running for the CRs, Spyders etc. I've got details of 90% of the 996 GT2s but am still adding them, should be a useful thing once it's finished, a CR one could be useful for future buyers.

Most definitely!
Now you just need a set of titanium wheel bolts to replace the horrible corroding Porsche items...
Oh, and the GT2 RS gear knob/gaiter looks absolutely great in a red CR too - don't have a picture handy though.

That does look fantastic, but largely because of the processing on the photo...
The slightly washed out red in the photo further up is more representative of the real world colour.

It changes massively depending on the light conditions. My front PU was painted as part of the sales prep by the OPC, in most lights it looks fine but in low light conditions it looks like the paint has more orange in it- I'm hoping this is a fresh paint on plastic issue rather than a wrong colour being applied

Oh come come.. you're being too hard on yourself.
Look at the green leaves in the processed pic, they look like they've being spray painted!
I used to think the Guards Red was a lovely colour but unless it is my eyes or my memory playing tricks it seems to have taken on an orange tinge these days.
Don't get me wrong still looks good but just not as good as I remember.
is red still a problem for modern cars? Thought they might have eliminated that sun-fade that blighted red cars of the 80s-noughties. They look awful when they turn slightly rose pink.
Shame if so as I quite fancy an R in red

No its no longer a problem with modern paint and even if it were, you can get rid of the pink paint with a good old polish.

I thought the black wheels came with matching black wheel bolts...mine are anyway...
They probably do, but I had my wheels painted after production, since I wanted the entire wheel black, inside and out. I never liked the silver rim that Porsche leaves on its black wheels, not to mention the fact that they leave the inside silver too. You'd think they'd do the whole wheel for over £1,000!
So I ended up with the standard, quite literally horrendous Porsche wheel bolts. Bought a set of titanium bolts from Tikore in the US and they're absolutely beautiful.

You're absolutely right - that one was pulled straight from my instagram stream, so it's very over-processed. Looks good though :-)
However, the earlier picture isn't representative of Guards Red either, because it's far more vibrant than that.
The pic below is raw with no contrast of colour adjustments, and it's a pretty fair approximation of the real colour on a slightly overcast day.
Lovely motah!
