The real question is how easy or hard is it to replace these yourself?

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

4 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Afternoon folks, after reading a thread about problems with the 996 coolant header tank, low and behold i think i may have the same problem, you couldnt make it up!!!!! Noticed my temperature was rising higher than usual so when i got home i checked it and noticed it was hovering above the minimum mark!!! it was left to cool down and came up very little. Had a look around and couldnt see any of the tell tale signs of it leaking so it may well be okay but as im working abroad i havent been out in it since!! The real question is how easy or hard is it to replace these yourself? has anyone any experience or is it easier just getting the local indy specialist to do it?? Any idea on prices for the job???

POST 2Original post

Header tanks are about £150 ish for the new modified type. Never buy a second hand one, waste of time. Forget glue jobs, I tried loads of different formula's they all failed. So, new tank then follow my FAQ: http://911uk.com/viewtopic.php?t=50417 :thumb: Lloyd

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Sweet, your a top bloke for that thread. Just to ring you dry, i have a 2001 C2 on a y plate, i see that there are two bottles, one for 996 up to 2000 @ £143, and then one for 996 2001 onwards @ £71! do you know off hand which bottle would be for my car as its the older shape 996?? Once again brilliant work and much appreciated. John

It is a pleasure to help keep peoples dreams alive! I would say the later one but I wasn't aware there were two part numbers. RichardH will be online soon or PM him your reg / chassis, I am sure he will advise which one. Don't be too hasty at this point as it could be something else, hose, rad etc. Just keep your eye on the coolant, keep it up to level until the problem is found. I would fill it up, then go on a drive, return to base and leave ticking over so it hits about 90deg+ on the temp guage. Then sniff around the car, look for obvious damp patches / drips. Still struggling then remove front bumper - this is actually a 15 minute job. With the rads exposed it make like much easier. Clean them all out while you are there. You will maybe find leaves, lots of dirts, mice, hedgehogs etc... get it all out, I pressure washed mine then pretty much emptied a can of WD40 over them then sprayed silicone over them to avoid corrosion but I do go OTT.
