Hi All,
Getting ready to remove and modify my stock headers and was looking for some confirmation/advice from those who have removed the headers themselves. My main questions surround what and what not to hit with penetrating fluid and the manifold gaskets.
First, I have seen that it is recommended to crack the O2 sensors loose while the exhaust is still warm so I plan to do that. I assume these should NOT be hit with any fluid so as to not damage them. I also plan to soak the bolts (headers to exhaust flange at least) in penetrating fluid but what about the manifold to head bolts? Is it advisable to hit those with the penetrating fluid or no?
Second, I have purchased new manifold and exhaust gaskets despite many of the write ups saying new manifold gaskets are not required. On the manifold gaskets, since I'll have new ones going in, do I need to also put on any type of sealant or is the new gasket itself sufficient? I assume I should just scrape away any old gasket residue from the head and put the new gasket on.
Beyond that I'm prepared to have to cut/press out the inevitably rusted exhaust flange studs & nuts and replace with stainless hardware. Thx!
Have debated updating my headers as well but the thought of fighting the 91k mile bolts on my NY car keep talking me out of it. Will you replace your O2 sensors or reuse?
No scraping or sealant is required on the factory metallic header and manifold gaskets. They seal by deforming a raised metal bead formed into the gasket, so it's just a matter of cleaning the mating surfaces and installing the new gaskets dry...just be sure to take note of their orientation upon removal, so that you can replicate it upon installation.

Thanks for the input.
I plan on reusing the O2 sensors, yes.
I have a

but my recommendation is that you need to use OEM gaskets. Period. I have had leaky gaskets from aftermarket ones twice (I've had 3 different sets of headers so far) but never had an issues with the OEM gaskets.
That’s what I’m going with
