Hi Guys
I tested the acceleration of my Cayman 3.8s today.
I have taken the time from 40km/h to 140km/h for a Cayman S, Carrera 2S, and 997tt and compared it with my Cayman 3.8s. The other cars were tested by Car magazine.
My Cayman has the stock 997s software and exhaust with 600km on the engine. The only modifications are headers, de-snork and light weight flywheel.
-------------------3rd-----4th------5th------6th (gear)
997 tt-------------6.9------9.0-----12.0-----17.6
Cayman 3.8s-----9.4-----12.2----15.4------20.3
997s-------------10.1-----13.4----17.3------24.5
Cayman S-------11.2-----15.3-----21.3------24.6
After running in the engine I will test it again with an aftermarket exhaust.
Cheers
Herman
Very nice. I'd like to see a 997 GT3 thrown in the mix. Thanks.
What was this tested with?
Hi Ken
I do not know how Car magazine test their car. I used my GPS the check that 40km/h is 40 km/h on my car and 142km/h on my car was 140 on my GPS.
I cuised at 40 and on a level road in 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th gear and used my Sports Chrone to measure the time it took to reach 142 km/h.
I did this four times per gear and the times were very close each time.
We have a Porsche day on 6 May and will then post my 1/4 mile results.
Car magazine is currently testing a GT3 RS. The results should be out next month.
Cheers
Herman
Did you use the figure on the speedo or the GPS??
There is quite a bit of "damping" built into the speedo reading, so you will actual hit 140 a lot sooner than the display reads 140kph.
Magazines would always use a GPS-based data-logger which would give much more accurate results.
The good news is, Herman, that correct measurement should only improve your figures
Mmmm, me too would like to see the 997 GT3 figures thrown in there as well.
Thanks for the continued feedback from your very interesting project.
Jack
Herman,
Would you please give me sourcing info on your light flywheel. Brand and specs if you have them. thanks!

Aasco Light Weight Flywheel
Hi Greg
My friend Randy owns Aasco Performance in LA. He makes a one piece aluminum flywheel that weighs about 16lbs.
He gave me Sachs clutch plate with springs as the standard disc is solid.
The price was $850 for the LWF and $500 for the clutch plate.
With this single mass flywheel you get a lot of gearbox clatter up to 2800 rpm. It sounds the same as a 997GT3RS as it also has a single mass LWF.
Cheers
Herman
Herman,
let me add my own thanks to you for sharing your experiences with all of us here on CC.
Best,

Herman, do you also have solid motor and trans mounts? I'm a bit suprised that you have that racing gear box sound due to the changed flywheel.
who did your conversion i am currently communicating with Farnbacher Loles as they seem to be the most reputable source here in the states. How many HP out of your 3.8, F-L says 400 hp out of their revo tuned conversion. K-Man Are they a site sponsor and if so is there something I should say or do to get you credit for the 50K or so i am going to spend with them?
