Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Thankfully it happened in the garage, so I applied the parking brake, and disconnected the battery since I couldn't turn the key to the off position.

It seems the issue is directly related to the transmission being hot.

Suggestion
but next time don't disconnect the battery until AFTER you've had a chance to check for codes, resident or otherwise.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Revisiting this issue, I took my '98 Boxster (39K miles) with Tiptronic for a spin, and everything seemed perfectly fine. I have noticed over the past year that the shifter has been a tad "tighter" but didn't really worry about it. After getting home, I went to move the shifter from D to P, and it was frozen solid in D.
I applied as much force as I felt comfortable with, without damaging anything, to no avail. Thankfully it happened in the garage, so I applied the parking brake, and disconnected the battery since I couldn't turn the key to the off position.
Fast forward to the next day, I checked the operation of the shifter and it slid smoothly into P. I ran the shifter through its paces, and it shifted like butter. It seems the issue is directly related to the transmission being hot. I have not driven it since, for fear of getting stuck somewhere with the transmission stuck in D.
I came across this article, and wonder if this is the issue that I have? I see they only made the specific part out of Bakelite in '97, but it is possible an early '98 might have it? Is it an easily replaceable part?

I don't know... but next time don't disconnect the battery until AFTER you've had a chance to check for codes, resident or otherwise.
My mechanic asked me for any codes when my transmission failed. I had disconnected the battery.
I think step one is to ensure it is transmission side related. So take it for a spin, warm it out, take it home where you can access the underside. Then try to move the transmission side (probably need to pop the cable of the ball to ensure). If still stuck, it honestly sounds very similar to the article you sent.
Replacement procedure I won't know, but I guess if you can manage yourself it is worth a shot...
My '97 had this issue and it WAS a broken bakelite shift selector valve. If you want to know for sure you can drop the pan and look. If it's not broken you can just assemble and reseal. Replacement is not too difficult if you've done some internal automotive maintenance before, but getting everything reassembled correctly will require the shop manual for torque specs. Refilling the transmission is a pain and takes around 10 liters of fluid.
Search my post history and you'll see pictures of my transmission.
