During regular driving it is not all that noticeable but the problem is still there.

As the rear brakes seem to be fine, i would suspect the brake booster is OK.

replacing the boots because of some people's skepticism to the aftermarket axles and because I had the boots on hand but I could never get the c/v joints apart off the inner end to slide the boots on.

Recently had the front calipers rebuilt and replaced the front brake lines from the hard lines to the calipers and the brakes I think are sticking at least as bad if not worse than they were before.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

and got about 2 hours away and the brakes suddenly went soft on the highway. I pulled over and got off the highway and drove about another 2 miles where it happened again with the brakes going soft and pedal going mostly to the floor. Each time this seemed to happen for about 1-2 seconds where upon pedal pressure came back. I limped the car around at low speeds but there were several times where the steering would jerk slightly as if the driver side front brake was locking and releasing along with a popping sound as it happened. The sound was apparent when leaving a complete stop too as if the brakes had frozen slightly similar to how your brakes rust over after a car wash. Shortly before this happened while sitting on a slight incline in traffic I got the impression that the brakes were dragging as I figured I should have been rolling based on the angle of the road when the brakes were released or at least rolling more than I was as it seemed the car was slowing more than it should without brake assist. Of course this killed my trip to the dragon and I wound up having to ship the car back to Texas. I got a hotel and jacked up each corner of the car and the fronts were definitely dragging. The rears from what I could tell were fine though at the moment I had the parking brake engaged so it didn't tell me too much. I pulled the ABS fuse just to see if the condition would improve and if the car could be limped home but within miles it was obvious the problem was coming back and I am pretty sure it was getting worse the increased heat of the brakes dragging. The car is now home and I scanned the ECU with my durametric today and got code 0501. I was thinking maybe this code popped up because of the fuse being pulled so I cleared the code and pulled the fuse but it did not trigger a check engine light apart from the ABS/TC lights. I drove the car about a mile just to see if I would get a CEL again. From the research I did, 0501 is the left rear speed/abs sensor? Would this impact the front brakes? FWIW I did just replace the rear axles before the trip but the car drove about 12 hours at least before having any issues? Is there some specific tests I can do with the durametric to get to the root of the probem?
I've had two cars that had a similar brake issue, but also had the brake pedal stick a little bit. The problem was corrosion in the brake booster from water seeping in. Are the drains in your battery area clear?
not describe them as clogged and I even poured water through them just to verify. I remember reading a week ago (when I was stranded) about someone taking their brake booster apart to find the inside rusted/corroded. Everything looks brand new in the car (120k miles) but I know the inside may tell a different story. For the past few years this car has been garaged pretty much anytime it is not being driven and the only water it sees is during washing. I have not driven it much over the past year as I had a fuel pump die and a mouse chew through the sensor wire for the fuel filler valve about a year ago. I see no evidence of chewed wires near the battery or booster thankfully. I did jack the car up just a moment ago on the driver side and both front and rear were not dragging though the front brake does seem to have a "slow" spot each time it turns but it is pretty slight compared to what it was last week. I am probably going to at least turn/replace the rotors pads if they are worn too much. Is there any test to do on the booster before just taking it out and taking it apart? It seems rebuilt units are a bit scare at the moment from searching.
The pedal going soft and to the floor is not what a failing brake booster should do, it should give you a very hard pedal (and increased pressured required on the pedal to brake effectively).
If the issue is in the brakes / fluid overheating due to dragging brakes you should be able to clearly smell the brakes. Also a quick walk around the car should reveal which corner it is as the heat can be felt easily.
ABS will not give you any issue with pedal pressure, so that shouldn't be your concern.
So I agree with the first reply to your post -> check the mechanical (/hydraulical) condition of your brakes.
Your brake booster and the line or hose going to it need to be able to hold a vacuum.
There is most likely also a one way valve as well.
You should be able to test them in place with something like a Mighty Vac.
As the rear brakes seem to be fine, i would suspect the brake booster is OK. Because front left and rear right and right front and left rear are connected. I suspect the front brake cylinders in the calipers to be bad.
Also, how old is the brake fluid and what type was used? DOT4 and DOT5 should be changed every two years. DOT5 is not allowed not be mixed with DOT4.
I agree that the brake booster is not the likely culprit at this point. I'll add that when mine was bad, I pulled out the vacuum tube and looked inside with a cheap borescope. With a flashlight you could probably observe some condensation inside.
Removed and opened:
For papasmurf (and future readers) can we come up with consensus on a logical diagnostic sequence for troubleshooting dragging brake/brake fade?
I don't know whether we can reach consensus on a diagnostic path, maybe some things can be clarified in advance.
The pedal was going soft and to the floor, but 1-2 sec later it was ok again. I assume it was after re-applying the brakes and it didn't move back up with your foot on it, right?
Brake fade doesn't disappear in 1-2 sec, the brakes need to cool. And as mentioned, you'll clearly smell the brakes when it happens.
Is there any leak (does the brake fluid level get any lower)? If not, it sounds like the MC is acting up. Still strange that it would be intermittent though.
Also, can you add a few more words on the jerky steering? Was this while braking or just appearing random, things like that. At the moment I don't see the link between the two symptoms you mention. I would check that the calipers are tight (torqued to the wheel carrier) to start with, check fluid level and leaks. Take a small trip around the block and check heat...
We bled the front brakes and there was an air bubble on the passenger side but the driver side was fine...fluid is not terribly old. Brakes seemed to be functioning normally, pedal pressure was normal, and there has been no more instances of the pedal going soft to the floor apart from the two times originally. I drove the car again a few miles and it felt better but upon getting back and jacking the car in the air, it was still very apparent the brakes were dragging as they would maybe do a half revolution when trying to turn them by hand. We had opened up the bleed screws and compressed the pistons back to take the pressure off the pads...closed everything up again and started the car and the dragging was back. I don't think the calipers are to blame personally as they are both doing the same thing and it started all at once. Same for the ABS sensors, and such cause it would be odd for both of them to go on the fritz at once. My gut is leaning toward the master cylinder even though some of the symptoms (brakes being soft, pedal to the floor) are not happening yet with regularity.
I had a 1996 Infiniti G20 which exhibited similar issues. I had a shop diagnose the problem and the technician recommended that I replace the master cylinder. This fixed the problem.
I'm not sure a lesson learned from an Infiniti applies to a Boxster, but your thought process seems to be trending in the direction of a master cylinder issue.
Finally got the master cylinder swapped out today and the system flushed. refilled and bled. I put about 2 miles testing on the car at relatively low speeds and came back and lifted the car again. Brakes are still sticking/dragging. During regular driving it is not all that noticeable but the problem is still there. Both fronts had issue. I jacked up the rear for comparison and playing "Wheel of fortune" I counted about 2.5 revolutions on the rear wheel compared to 1/2-3/4 revolution on the front wheel. Also, I was curious as to if the rear axle swap I recently did could have any effect on the abs system as there is supposedly a "gear" on one of the axles (or both) that the ABS system uses in measuring wheel speed I guess or something similar. My car has the PSM system too. I did have the check engine light for 0501 when this all began which I think was the driver side rear though it has never come on again since it was cleared.
I suspect the code will return as you do more driving. However, I believe you're onto something...
A check engine light for code P0501 means your car's computer (PCM/ECM) detects an issue with the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) “A” Range/Performance, signaling that the speed data it's receiving isn't within normal limits, often causing erratic speedometer, bad shifting, or ABS/Traction Control issues, typically due to a faulty sensor, wiring problems, or a damaged wheel speed sensor/reluctor ring.
replacing the boots because of some people's skepticism to the aftermarket axles and because I had the boots on hand but I could never get the c/v joints apart off the inner end to slide the boots on. They are supposedly supposed to come apart pretty easily but I did not find that to be the case.
Does the following summarize the situation?
Brakes are fine in the garage, but after a couple of miles of driving, they are not.
That sounds very much heat related to me, and the only place where heat shows up is in the calipers.
Recently had the front calipers rebuilt and replaced the front brake lines from the hard lines to the calipers and the brakes I think are sticking at least as bad if not worse than they were before. Master cylinder has been replaced too and a fluid flush/bleeding has been done. Is next the ABS pump or the booster? I can't see it being the ABS sensors because they both seemed to start sticking at roughly the same time. Doesn't matter whether the car is running or off they are sticking.
