I've DIY'd these on mine, but if my Indy had tried to charge me 3-4.5k for replacing both sets I would have been very unhappy.

Assuming you don't want new hoses etc the parts come in under 1k (much less if you want to use Autodoc or similar).

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi all; looking to get a rough idea of cost on the following jobs before I get myself in to 996 ownership: Drivetrain and engine: Gearbox rebuild, I hear 2nd gear can fail and need a rebuild o2 sensors Cooling: Air con condensers and radiators Suspension/Steering Two front shocks, top mounts Droplinks Track Rod ends Steering column replace/rebuild Anyone had any of these jobs done recently and happy to share the rough cost? (UK South East)

POST 2Original post

The best way is to enquire over the phone to a specialist, that way you are atleast coming across as serious. Or just buy an example that has had most of the major work done and stop worrying about it, especially if its only a weekend toy.

Thanks yeah I had an inspection done on the car and got some rough figures, was looking for others opinions before going back to the owner with an offer

I guess the only problem is there might be a chance you end up in the same position; I think it's quite a common problem for second to go

bennno said: Be a lot cheaper if you do it all yourself and buy the parts from design 911. Yeah some of those jobs I'd take on myself for sure. Others, sadly my set-up means a job has to be started and finished in a day, don't have the luxury of leaving a car in pieces without getting nagged at :-D

I had a long chat with Chris at Wrightune who was super helpful and we got a ballpark figure out. Offer's been accepted on the car :-) Thanks all

Well done on the offer, the early 996s are lovely. Is it a manual coupe, ideally on ambers? Pics....?

RiccardoG said: Well done on the offer, the early 996s are lovely. Is it a manual coupe, ideally on ambers? Pics....? It's exactly that. Manual Coupe on ambers, LSD (although I imagine the diff clutches are shot), Sport Pack with the wingback seats and the lower suspension, Traction Control for what it's worth and the 18" Turbo Twist alloys. Totally standard and unmolested; just needs a bit of money spent to bring back up to tip-top condition. Can't wait!

theador said: Nice and pricey then :-D. This is not 100%, you ask / shop around. Some cars need certain stuff replaced, some do not for a long while. If you do 3K miles year vs 10K miles, then maintenance items come in thicker and faster in the latter case naturally ...

Assuming you don't want new hoses etc the parts come in under 1k (much less if you want to use Autodoc or similar). If I hadn't had to wait for extra parts I could have done it all in half a day (minus the regas, which was about 80 quid plus a dryer). I'm not a pro mechanic by any stretch and this was all on my drive without a ramp. To put that into perspective I got charged about 5.5k for an engine out, head strip, replacement (one bank) hydraulic tappets, and sundries.

I am normally against DIY with high end makes of cars, but as N/A & non GT 996's are generally priced modestly and will remain that way. I think it kind of falls into the 'working man' hobbyist category of cars, i.e Japanese sports cars, classic muscle cars etc

I’m not touching gearboxes, steering columns or anything like that though! There’re a bunch of small things that need doing too: Inner door membrane, paint lacquer, cloudy headlights, broken centre console lid, but that’s all stuff again I can do, other than the door membrane which is starting to ingress water and getting some protection on the paint for now, there’s nothing urgent there.

POST 22Original post

Hi OP- I saw that you’d spoken with Chris at Wrightune. Earlier this year I bought a 996.2 which was in a bit of a state and needed a few big jobs doing (steering rack, brake pipes, AOS replacement, water ingress). I took it to Wrightune to have them sorted and was really happy with their service, and their labour rate is very competitive. In case you’re thinking of using them for your bigger jobs.

Some of the prices quoted above seem high. £8k for fixing a gearbox, that's McLaren F1 prices. Sure not even an OPC would charge that. Find a reputable indie, source the parts on somewhere like D911 or Pelican (what I did) and see the real cost. When I have time I'll share my cost sheet for the last 2 years, when I did all brake lines, suspension and exhaust

When I have time I'll share my cost sheet for the last 2 years, when I did all brake lines, suspension and exhaust You are a bit out of touch an oil change on a McLaren f1 is £8k, a set of tyres £50k. A McLaren sport series gearbox is £18k not including removal and fitting. A rebuilt 996 gearbox is £4-6k. Plus removal and fitting, plus a clutch whilst it’s oily, plus anything else they spot.

POST 25Original post

To give further evidence/support to a few things I've done quite a lot of preventative work alongside a full engine rebuild on my 3.4 manual. The pinion bearing was noisy on the gearbox and the parts alone 3 yrs ago were over £700 before a gearbox specialist did the strip down of the box which my techie had taken only 12 minutes to remove (yes I timed him for a bet!). Once you get in to the suspension you may as well do the whole thing whilst its apart i.e. top mounts, control arms, bump stops etc. etc. I used Spyder Performance for the coffin arms etc. (reputedly Meyle parts with no stamps on them) and they are much better vfm than an identical Meyle part with a casting stamp on Sometimes a main dealer will be competitive if you ask nicely & Design 911 can be just as expensive as some dealers once you factor in postage. 911uk forum has a wealth of experience from the forum members and without certain exclusions on what you can/cannot say when it comes to parts/dealer things
