Bought mine from Suncoast and had it installed locally for $200.

I'm happy to say that (for other reasons) I took my business elsewhere (Walters) and they replaced my marker lenses for free while I was on my way over to take delivery of the car...

Suggestion
You are close to spending the cash equivalent of a real performance enhancing mod -- an AWE or other exhaust -- on replacing a shifter that is already quite good.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I received my car and missed out on the factory installed short shifter. I am considering to get it installed now. The dealer quotes me $720 for the shifter and $725 for installation.
Any feedback from you guys with the short shifter would be highly appreciated.
Can you live without it? Would you spend $1400 for it?
Thanks!
Ray
The dealer is ripping you off, are you sure he doesn't mean $720 installed?
Site sponsors charge $399-$439 for the shifter and installation is an hour to an hour and a half of labor.

The price seems rater high. Like two times too high. That said, what don't you like about the stock shifter? I was all set to have one installed (for about half of what you were quoted and by the dealer(!)). Then I asked myself: "Why?" I don't race my car, no one can tell by looking what shifter you have, and the stock shifter is pretty much better than any other shifter on any other car I've driven. You are close to spending the cash equivalent of a real performance enhancing mod -- an AWE or other exhaust -- on replacing a shifter that is already quite good. If you are buying it because you love the feel of it having tested one out, get it. I test drove a 997S with one and realized it wouldn't make me any happier with my car. The 3.8 on the other hand.....
Talk About Sticker Shock
that price is insane! Since the center console has to come out, I imagine there's quite a bit of labor involved.
I optioned my car with the short shift kit. I'm very happy with it. Have you had a chance to try one out? The throws are shorter and require a little more effort. It's a very mechanical, almost notchy feel. It's a significant difference from the stock shifter which is very smooth.
Is it worth $1,400? Personally, I'd have a real hard time justifying that price. You better love it for that kind of money.
Ray - Welcome to the club. I noticed you've asked a lot of questions this morning - that's a good thing. Along with the answers you got above, if you use the search tool, you'll find a ton (literally) of previous information on the short shifter, wheel spacers, and aftermarket exhaust systems. Quite a few folks have the Milltek system and have extensively shared their experience with it. Please do some searching, too.

Thanks everyone for the quick feedback!
Seems my local dealer (Pacific Porsche in Torrance) tries to make an extra buck on me.
Yes, I have driven a car with the short shifter in Germany (am originally from G.) and really loved it. When I heard they need ½ a day to install at Pacific I started wondering.
Read some more posts now via the search tool (thanks beez) and seems that 1.5 hours is more reasonable. Not sure what Pacific is doing with the other 3.5 hours
Any locals here in the LA neighborhood who know of a good alternative for installation?
Thx
Ray
Try a place like Callas Rennsport in Torrance, which supports the local PCA region and its members with advertising and technical sessions. [phone removed]

You could even drive up the coast to
www.sharkwerks.com
. Carlsen Porsche, near sharkwerks, has that shifter for $399 on-line as of this minute.
That way you could have an enjoyable drive up the coast to say good bye to the factory shifter and hello to the short shifter on the drive back.
You would save lots of cash over that quote. And you would get to see Alex's toys!!
I was quoted a similar price from Pacific when I placed my order...They also wanted ~ $200 to swap in the clear side marker lenses. I'm happy to say that (for other reasons) I took my business elsewhere (Walters) and they replaced my marker lenses for free while I was on my way over to take delivery of the car...
Bought mine from Suncoast and had it installed locally for $200. Great modification, sorry I did not order it that way, but easily fixed. I track my car and it is very noticable there.
Had mine installed today, works perfect, a little more resistance (would expect that to go away over time) but very precise shifts....
had it done for 900 USD including a new aluminium shift knob....
My Car and Driver mag arrived today. 40,000 miles on their long-term Boxter with factory short-shift. They said it exchanges shorter throws for stiffness. Some of the staff did not like it, some did. If you live in a cold climate, think twice. SoCal or Kuwait, no prob.
short shifter
I think you can live without it and save your money.
I have a standard shifter and it works very good. People say that the short one it's not so good when the engine is cold, it's a little bit harder to use ... but I have no experience about it.

Hi Ray:
You're local to me (I live in Torrance). What I did was buy the B&M short shifter from Bumperplugs (site sponsor) when it was on sale for $149, and then had it put in by a local installer - EuroRev in Gardena. They charged me $150 for the install and it took about 2 hours. The install was flawless and the shifter works wonderfully. Plus, they gave the OEM shifter back to me, although I'm not sure what to do with it. Anyone need it?
If you'd like the address/phone number to EuroRev, shoot me a PM.
Is this from your personal experience? I had absolutely no issues with my factory SS this past winter. There may be reasons not to get it, but living in a cold climate isn't one from my experience. For me, it's a "must have" option that I enjoy every time I drive my car.
Sorry to hi-jack your thread, but while we're on the subject of short shifters:
Do we really need this?

Thanks all!
Decision is made, will defiantly do it. Just checking around more for a better install cost.
Again, thanks for the feedback. Highly appreciated.
Do it, but don't let the dealer do it. That price is stupid.
I LOVE mine. (I was in a loaner yesterday, and forgot how much I disliked the original shifter). I prefer some added notchiness, so the whole thing is win-win for me. the added shortness of the shifts is awesome.
You can buy the B&M shifter from Bumperplugs or some other vendor for a less than the factory one, and install it yourself for free. It's relatively simple. As I've said on this forum a few times - I am not all that mechanically inclined, and I installed it with little to no trouble.
Heck, if you live in Houston, I'd be glad to help you do it.
