What is everyone's opinion on the best road car porsche currently make? I take delivery 29th of mine

POST 2Original post

Clearly it's not the 911 T (992), that's a better option for those who can't get / afford the 911 GT3 touring. Personally I think the Cayman GTS 4.0 is a better sports car, the 911 is too big these days (and expensive). I can't afford a 992 at all, so you're doing better than me...

POST 3Original post

The Carrera S is a better car than the T in every measurable way despite the parity in price in the used market - unless you like decals

POST 4Original post

I'd be taking a 718 Spyder RS Naturally Aspirated Mid Engined Can take the roof off. My dad owned a 992 when they first launched - at the time, I had a 987.2 Boxster S. I genuinely found the Boxster to be the nicer drive - even though objectively speaking it was worse in every possible way.

POST 5Original post

Personally I’d take the current 992 Turbo S over any other Porsche currently for sale at the moment, I think the GT3 RS is way too lairy.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

https://youtu.be/yULjzUjEgu8?si=9xTaAm_qwFanlUs_ This is a great comparison between gt3 touring, Gts and the carrera T.

POST 7Original post

From the above video I’d take the GTS, seems like just the right balance. It’s hard to believe that the GT3 ‘only’ has just over 500 bhp.

POST 8Original post

OP, you may want to look at this thread discussing the T: https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

POST 10Original post

For the dedicated enthusiast the GT3 would be up there, but for most people it wouldn’t be (as evidenced by the ridiculous number of owners for so many of them). Also, many would find the engine lacks punch compared to a GTS in most road situations. Any carrera can be modified to be like a GTS (or better) relatively easily. With the 992s though, the base carrera doesn’t have the manual option as it would have impinged upon the fairly tenuous USPs of the T.

POST 13Original post

I think for the everyday driver the 992 T is pretty much perfect for todays road use. You just have to read the reviews to realise that it’s a bit special. The GT3 though has the engine. If you could actual walk into a dealership and order either I personally would of gone for a GT3 ( we might soon be able to do that ) because I only have my 911 as a weekend car but after owning over 10 911’s since the 997 I really do think these will have a classic status . especially with a manual box. Edited by Chipper on Saturday 11th November 20:38

POST 14Original post

So many people buy a GT3 based on the hype thinking it will be their ultimate car, but there is a reason why they have so many owners, it really isn’t a car for everybody for road use. Too compromised. Same can be said for the GTS now. But there is a 911 for everybody. My OPC has bought back loads of GTS due to people hating the ride, and they’ve bought back Turbo S as people found them too fast. But other people will love those cars. I had a 992S and I bloody loved it, regret selling it. I’m now buying a T as even the S was too fast for the road.

POST 15Original post

718 GT4/Spyder is a great value road car and rapid enough....approx 85% a GT3 at half the cost. Ran a manual 991.2 T from new good car but nothing special overall and way less involving as a drivers car v the Cayster GT4 /Spyder. Main problem with the 992 T is due to its vast price rises now offers poor value for money.

Went to the driver day at Silverstone and went out on the roads instead of the track with the instructor. It’s a great car no doubt but with a pdk box it was just too fast, too powerful to actually enjoy driving day to day for me. I went out for 3 hours today all around Elan Valley ( had a lovely GT3 Touring overtake me ) driving and enjoyed the T.. How anybody in a Turbo can actually utilise the performance is beyond me. Seriously how do you actually use the performance on the roads ?

POST 17Original post

For me, as above - but it depends what you’re in it for. Standing-by for a flaming, but the vast majority of halo 911s are completely the wrong tool for most owners, who wouldn’t see which way a well-driven base car went. I recently had a few days with a 992 S and while it was thoroughly excellent in every measurable way, I keep thinking that as a road car, 992s are all hysterically fast, so as someone who wants to use more of the rev-range without getting into serious trouble, I think my ideal road 911 is still from the NA 991.1 era. I’m in it for smiles and enjoyment, and I just couldn’t find myself having fun in the 992 on the road. However, as more of an effortless performance mile-muncher, a base or T 992 fits the bill nicely.

I agree with AV for once but surely the Cayster Gts is a better road car than the GT4/Spyder and better value for the money being about £20k cheaper! There only main difference between the GT4 and GTS is the suspension which some decent coilovers could give the Gts the advantage as an all rounder ( track/roadcar) GT4 touring perhaps?

GT3 is a track car 1st road car 2nd and the touring (I love the look) is a wingless GT3 but to hard and when you get get to peak revs you in risk of losing your licence. GT4 and spyder are no longer available to order. The spyder RS would be unbearable on a longer road trip.

So it’s a toss between the 911T (c £110k lightly optioned)or a Cayman Gts 4.0 (c £80k lightly optioned). If you only need 2 seats then the cayman is a no brainer and £30k cheaper, NA and proper 6 speed manual box.

I was a bit split on this decision, however my T was in the original batch at £98.5k and it already comes with a stack of options so other than metallic, a rear camera and folding mirrors it doesn't really need anything more, I took the foc rear seat option as it makes more sense. Imho compared to the 718 which is based on the aged 981 platform t's a much more modern car to drive / nicer car to be in.

Fair points but I think by the time you have thrown some money at the GTS to essentially try to give it anywhere near the GT3 chassis like the GT4 you are still left with the GTS as a car and package which obviously excludes many expensive options trim etc standard on the GT4 and obviously the better and more powerful GT4 engine. Best advice as usual would be the OP spends some seat time in the cars they are interested in and then to decide whether the best choice is a 911 or Cayster.

Best advice as usual would be the OP spends some seat time in the cars they are interested in and then to decide whether the best choice is a 911 or Cayster. The extra 20 horses of the GT4 is just a ECU tweak if you are not doing track days don’t want buckets (no other standard trim difference between cars) and a wing the Gts is the sensible choice over a GT4, some KW coilovers will give you a better chassis than the gt4 (which only really sets the 2 apart) hence the reference to perhaps a GT4 Touring.

POST 26Original post

I am not disrespecting the GT4 as anyone who bought at list, love doing track days got a cracking car but for a purely road car the Gts is a better choice imo

I have spent time in both, I owned a 718 Cayman for a short time, I found the 992 better in every way, not that the Caymans is a bad car it felt out dated its is coming up to 7 years since it came out. All the reviews of the T are calling it the pick of the current Porsche line up, I have to agree as I have bought one. It's good to hear people opinion.

POST 29Original post

I found the regular 992s and gts models a bit sterile and the first time ever a little bit intimidating on narrow roads ,I haven’t driven the T nor the 992 gt3 but the regular 992 engine is nice it just isn’t special and for me the engine is the heart and soul of a car . I would imagine the cayman gts is very possibly the sweet spot although the gearing may annoy .

POST 30Original post

A tad lighter is generous, it’s around 5kg or so, depending on spec I think a 370hp optioned t at £110,000 just seems extreme these days when a 430hp mg is £35k and a polestar is £40k If I was to get a Porsche these days it’d either be used or a turbo s / gt3 I think, but everyone has different psychological reasoning

I’m pretty sure it’s quicker than my T. Would I wake up and rush outside first thing in the morning to drive it across Wales for the fun of it. No way. One of the main reasons I bought the T is we are right at the end of being able to actually buy a new Manual ICE vehicle.

POST 32Original post

I’ve had a Turbo S, and several GT3s, culminating in a 991.2 GT3 Touring. I know we’re all different, but found them a bit disappointing and frustrating as ‘road cars’ - in the UK. Never gelled with the Turbos, and the ‘Touring’ is/was a missed opportunity by Porsche. Most of my annual mileage is covered in France, where the roads and driving enjoyment are on another level. But, even here, I think I’d get more satisfaction out a, supposedly, lesser car, such as a base C2, S, or ‘T’ - and preferably manual.

I also doubt the touring can be called a missed opportunity by Porsche given the demand for them

I also doubt the touring can be called a missed opportunity by Porsche given the demand for them He did mention he does the lions’ share of his mileage in France, where I would agree a halo 911 is a different proposition.

+1 vote for Cayman GTS 4.0 it really is the absolute bargain in the Porsche range currently and the 'thinking man's GT4 Touring'... as someone else said, it offers 80% of a GT3 for a fraction of the price and the engine is a detuned 4.0 anyway - it wouldn't take much to unleash its full potential. I often think about these or a base 992 Carrera in Carmine Red and sports exhaust, and keep coming back to the Cayman GTS; phenomenal package for the money. I'm amazed they are still offering them in the range tbh

Always hard to beat the base Carrera as the pick of the range. I'll have a base gen 2 992 Carrera Cab with PDK. Getting old

Everyone is different, but I much prefer the mid engined layout over the engine way out back setup. I much prefer driving cayman over the 911 on a spirited drive. For the daily/cruising around the 911.

Pistonheads seems to think the base Carrera is the best, but sales figures in the real world show it is the least popular variant, and the most popular variants being the ones with far more power. Same goes for manuals, the cheapest 992 GTS cars are all manuals and so are the 718 Cayman GT4 & Spyders. The only manual boxes that seem to command a (small) premium are the 991.2 GT3 manual cars

My local deal offered me a Gts, T, Turbo s allocation. Porsche offer the cars with a higher profit margin.

Also, the problem for many is, you are told you need £xxx in options, so people then think, might as well buy the S, if for resale only.

There's Porsche Torque Vectoring and PASM Sports Suspension which isn't available on the base model. Perhaps it's better described as a nicely specc'd Carrera S with a detuned engine?

The fact people are prepared to pay extra for the T shows you that power is now at the point where it is not the main consideration. Sport seat plus, Sport PASM, PSE, sound insulated glass are all options I would tick, I would also prefer manual over PDK. That suddenly makes the T make a lot of sense. The fact it has a badge that separates it from a well specced base model, with an interior package that makes it feel a bit different, and has nice wheels as standard (compared to the base model) with some nice exterior trim bits means it makes sense to a lot of people. The S is only £7000 more, and you would probably get all your money back come resale? Unlike a base Carrera specced the same. Maybe? Maybe not? Actually I doubt there will be much in it. But I don't think that you can say the S is a better measurable car in every way. Specced the same I would still chose the T.

What I meant is if you get the Carrera S with all the same options as the T (including a manual box), the S is better in every way you can measure. There's a reason the Carrera S is the best selling model. The next is a toss up between the GTS and Turbo/S models. Obviously there's a vocal minority that prefer the option with less power but it's just a preference and even then, the base Carrera still massively outsells the T

To many the T exceeds the sum of its parts. The usual naysayers who haven't even driven one wouldn't begin to understand this and did exactly the same when the 997 GTS landed in 2010 claiming it was simply a glorified C2S with a slightly more powerful engine and hush puppy interior. More fool them up until recently the 997 GTS retailed well over list due to its capabilities. Dicky Meaden described it as one of his favourite 911s....praise indeed. Same story with the 991.2 T arrived in 2017. I ordered one and enjoyed it very much as a rare limited run tourer last of the narrow bodied Carreras.

Sorry but your argument holds no water at all. The reason why the base is sold less is purely down to ego. Nothing wrong with that. I can understand why.

There are as many ‘best’ Porsches as there are buyers….. As many sweet spots as there are colours… It’s a never ending conversation. Budget rules pretty much everything 2nd hand or new Coupe or convertible PDK or manual NA or turbo Test drive ‘em all!

The 718 GTS is a step on from the already brilliant 2014-2016 981 GTS in every measure except engine sound. And when compared to the (significant) step up in £££££ to get into even the base 911 or Carrera S, let alone a more characterful N/A variant, then I'd say yes it is still a bargain and that the 718 GTS 4.0 isn't hugely expensive at all... It's not so much that it's a hugely expensive Cayman, more so that big inflation and therefore currency de-valuation / eroding of purchasing-power means you have to spend more ££££ for the same goods/products/services these days compared to pre-covid because of the quantitative easing & currency creation.
