So along with the power you have a pdk and 4 wheel steer, which probably means that it can use it more of the time with complete safety, so I am thinking not too much for road use probably.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi Guys Went back about 10 pages or so looking to see if there was a thread similar and couldn't find one. Just wondered if anyone had done this and what they thought. Dropped in to get the paperwork for the recent service my local OPC did while I was away on business, and they had a 991 GT3 at the door. Could prove to be a bloody expensive service. My 997 GT3 has been the best car I've owned to date, test drive tomorrow morning, but wanted to see if anyone had any thoughts prior? thanks Andy

POST 2Original post

Would be worth posting on the GT3 thread. Owners seem to be raving about the 991, so can't see you being disappointed. If they have one for sale then it could be a good opportunity.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

thanks guys - found the Gt3 thread! Sorry about that! Bloody magic cars!

POST 6Original post

At the risk of sounding a bit moany , having just finished thrapping my 997.1 GT3 round Wales for a long weekend, I really don't see what the attraction of a 991 for road driving is. If you're gonna track it loads, fair play But on the road a 7.1 GT3 is already virtually completely pointless+++, so adding more power, an even more competent chassis and paddles seems a bit daft. Don't get me wrong ref the 7.1 GT3, epic car, engine is a work of art with a sound to match etc, handling is amazing (as best I can tell) yet comfortable, but based on figures (I have not driven one so that is all it is) the 996.1 GT3 was probably the last one where you could truly get thrilled at speeds that weren't monumentally illegal. +++=IMHO, on the road the 7.1 GT3 is already too easy to drive rather quickly. Was out with a a BAC Mono, Caterham R500 and a Caterham R400. First 2 cars were very new to the owners (like the GT3 to me), the last has been owned for 5 years by the owner. All of us are roughly the same skill level, Mono and Caterhams should have shot off like rats up a drainpipe up the narrow roads, whereas my mates jokingly complained I was always in their rear view mirror and I don't think it's my driving "talent" unfortunately Added to this, while I really like the 7.1 GT3 and it makes me giggle, I'm not sure I'll ever truly "love" it like I do my 993. At fairly regular points I was wishing I was in that over the weekend just because it would have been exciting more of the time

POST 7Original post

Just gone 997.2 GT3 to 991 GT3, wish I could have kept both... I genuinely believe the 991 will get used far more than the 997, anyone who says its not as exciting as the previous model is talking nonsense! I've just come back from an evening run to see a mate & I'm still smiling (& shaking!) Personally a short test drive with a salesman sitting next to you won't tell the whole story... I also have a 993 Cab & love it, however I can't ever see me driving the 991 wishing I was in the 993!

Do you not get slightly frustrated/bored with the fact that you can only give it the full potatoes on the road for a few secs before having to back off so you don't hit massive leptons? 80mph in my 993 with the roof down feels like about 120mph in the 7.1 GT3....can only imagine it's a lot worse in a 991 and you don't even have the manual swapping of cogs to distract you! At the risk of making it a self fulfilling prophecy , I am almost convinced that I'll get points on my so far always clean licence in the 7.1 GT3

At the risk of making it a self fulfilling prophecy , I am almost convinced that I'll get points on my so far always clean licence in the 7.1 GT3 I know what you mean, however, like you I've done a few car tours with mates in relatively quick cars, on a great A/B road with overtaking needed to be done quickly & confidently only power will suffice! My 993 is superb but there would be too many times that I'd get stuck behind a caravan/lorry etc whilst all my friends have shot off & left me behind! Now a lazy run to my office on a nice sunny day & the 993 suits perfectly

Mario149 said: Really? Do you not get slightly frustrated/bored with the fact that you can only give it the full potatoes on the road for a few secs before having to back off so you don't hit massive leptons? I already have this problem in my 997.2 C4S on the road and my 996 C2 before that. I think anything that can handle a bit and has more than 300 hp is over-specced for road use if you start pushing on. Straight line grunt is always handy though, but can get you into serious trouble if you abuse it too much. It might give you more overtaking opportunities, but the margin of error gets smaller and smaller too. Would a 991 GT3 actually be faster or more fun than a 997 GT3 on the road? I guess it would have the potential to be quicker, but you'd have to be insane to actually drive it faster than a maxed out 997 GT3. So unless track lap times are important to you or there is something else you prefer in the 991 (comfort maybe?) then it seems a bit pointless to upgrade unless you just want to have the latest and greatest toy because you can.

POST 14Original post

Porsche seem to be having a quality nightmare at the moment - the latest issue in the GT3 thread concerns oil consumption or perhaps more like a dodgy problem with the electronic sensor which tells you how much oil is on board. Were I in your position of enjoying a 997 GT3 which is giving no problems, I think I would almost certainly stick a pin and hold on to what I have until such times as 'issues' relating to the 991 GT3 fall silent. People appear to have got themselves into rather unfortunate positions of mental torture with the whole engine failure saga and Porsche's handling of it. Give it a year and we'll know better if all mechanical problems were resolved. Peter

POST 15Original post

I find the gt3 let's say just sufficient for road use - gen 1RS that is.. The question is then which roads. I live in the Cotswolds, so out of holiday season there are some great empty roads (tractors being the exception). Take one to the alps though and it's a whole new ball game, you suddenly find that you only just about have enough power, and could do with a bit more for such an amazing chassis. Maybe I need a 4.0 ltr!. I think Porsche, in their marketing wisdom needed to move the game on a bit further for all sorts of reasons and have made the 991 GT3 two cars in one, rather than such a singular, polarised and extreme car such as the 996 GT3 and then less so the 997 GT3. So it can be the boulevard cruiser AND the track weapon. So along with the power you have a pdk and 4 wheel steer, which probably means that it can use it more of the time with complete safety, so I am thinking not too much for road use probably. Looking forward to having a drive in one to see what all the fuss is about, and I think it may be an eye opener, as many are finding out. The big question is how much self control do I have. Think back to the first few cars we all had, it was foot to the boards, and as fast as you could get the thing around the bends, so as not to loose momentum because there was no power. Now here in 2014 we have a whole new problem, if you can call it that, in that we can all virtually have as much power as we want or are willing to pay for. The roads haven't improved, they are generally busier, so how much power can you use?. Answer is - where it is used!. Take it into the alps!.

Interesting thread and although slightly off topic, find myself sometimes getting frustrated with my 997 GTS. When I really want to push on, have to have a lot of self restraint to stop. That said, on the right road at the right time, I love it. I backed out of a 7.1 GT3 for the GTS, would love a 991 GT3...so I'd say go for it.

POST 20Original post

Interesting thread. If I'd no previous experience of gt3's I'd have driven a 991 gt3 and said there was no other car to own and to a degree if you like the Motorsport cars then to a degree that's true but having owned a few of these cars including a great 6RS I switched back to a 997 gt3. It's not everyone's 'perfect Porsche' but it's a brilliant compromise of wanting a car you can always use and one you can take to a track. The RS whilst a great car and no doubt a good place to put some cash will never be an everyday 911. The 991 will always be a astounding car but playing with a gear stick and in this current age of speed traps a good 997 gt3 CS give you all the thrills you need. Just IMO of course but most of us are average drivers and needing to want to keep a license it's potentially a smart move. The 991 without doubt would cost me my license.
