Everytime it happens I take the car back to my dealer and they have replaced a number of rollers.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

The tech said to bring the car in to have it fixed.
After keeping the windows down for a period during a short drive, I noticed a large smear on the insides of both the drivers and passenger's windows. At first I thought it was moisture as we had a rain earlier in the day but then realized that it wasn't water but some sort of grease or oil.
Anyone have this?
-Stevie
From past experience with a 350Z there was a window lift motor that was spiewing its grease onto the window. I don't know if a replacement or shield was the fix but, they nailed via a tech bull. I hope my dealer gets it on this as well.

I have the same problem - one streak about 1" wide near the rear of the window. But I've had a similar problem in other cars - same position, actually - so I think it must be common. I tend to wash my croc more than I should (my neighbors think I'm nuts), so the streak isn't there for long...
I didn't have this problem at first. But with the nice weather lately I've started keeping my windows down more. Also, it's been raining for the last 3 days on and off, which appears to make matters worse. Ijust talked to the dealer about this yesterday. The tech said to bring the car in to have it fixed. Apparently, there is a felt pad that keeps the window pressed against the door when it's down. I guess to avoid rattling. He said this felt pad got contaminated and needs to be R2'd.

back from service, the window streaks re-appeared and they are worse (along with the loose 2”x 4” in the rear trunk)! All components in our vehicles should be as state-of-the-art as its exemplary drivability. <o

I have 1,400 miles. My car has streaks on the inside. It's been moist and wet here. Not too big of a deal right now. I bet it'll go away after a while. I bet people in dry climates like New Mexico don't have this problem. I think the humidity allows the grease to adhere to our window. Somewhat annoying but I can live with it.
Shane
I have more than 2,400 miles now, and have not experienced this problem at all. It might be the dry condiditons in Las Vegas, but I've had the car back and forth to N. California twice and have driven in all kinds of weather conditions and seen no problems like this.
As for some of the other problems, I haven't had a problem with loose stuff in the front or rear trunk, no rattles - the car is tighter than a drum, my throttle response is perfect in both non-sport chrono mode and even sharper in sport mode - particularly in downshifts, it took me all of 5 minutes to program the homelink for both my garage door and community gate - and I can open both about 1/2 a block away, I've had no radio reception problems - the radio sound quality isn't what a CD is, but I expected that, I do wish there was an iPod interface, but burning CDs works for me just fine, the tint on my windows look just fine, and I've had no problems with the key whatsoever, and I'm happy to put the key in the ignition to start the car - I also like the fact that I can put the key in the door and open or lock it manually if I have to for some reason. A hands-free key sounds like more to go wrong, if you ask me.
Porsche
designs their cars to be sports cars with just enough luxury for my taste, not to be fast luxo-barges with every bell and whistle available. Most of their engineering goes into the 'go' quotient, not the luxo portion, and that's fine with me.

I've just passed the magic 2K mile mark and have to ditto beez's statement above. I really haven't had any problems with any part of the car's performance. It just could be luck, but I think
Porsche

I'll blame brad for the jinx. ;-)

It's the window mechanism scuffing the glass as it raises / lowers it in the craddle. It is a VERY common problem across several brands. My last three cars all had the issue to one extent or another. It is typically made worse with wet weather, so unless you live in a desert....
Paul
Yes, the 'streak' that is left on the window is caused by the motor mechanism 'scuffing' against the window as it raises / lowers it. Just semantics.
Paul
I guess I've got nothing good to add. Ive had the car since around Feb and with 6000 miles still streaking on the passenger window. I may be the seal on the interior because it also has de-laminated 4 tint efforts from a very reputable shop. no problems on the driver window. the streak is two to three inches wide and six to eight high. strange how it varies sometime...
Hi guys - I have had the same problem on my 04 996 cab. Everytime it happens I take the car back to my dealer and they have replaced a number of rollers. In other instances the rollers have been cleaned/degreased. It would appear to be a design and/or manufacturing problem. I was not prepared to live with it nor should any of you. The problem can always be fixed although it can be time-consuming work as the door panel has to be removed I believe. I am picking up my CS on Saturday and I will be taking it straight back should these streaks start appearing on this new car. I am surprised and disappointed that this problem appears to have carried over to the CS - I was told by my dealer's service staff that this was a common problem with the 996.
Thanks for the heads-up - I will be bringing this post to my dealer's attention on Saturday.
