We stayed in Pforzheim and came into Stuttgart on the train, but the hotel we used on both trips wasn't so great last time, but it was being refurbished so may be ok now (ParkHotel).

Hi all, we're looking at booking a few days to Stuttgart to visit the Porsche museum and do a factory tour. We're going to be taking the 911 so does anyone have any recommendations for decent hotels - one in Stuttgart (or outskirts) and one maybe in the Reims area of France? Gotta have decent roomy parking! Any other recommendations?
Also go to the Mercedes museum, its brilliant.
We stayed in Pforzheim and came into Stuttgart on the train, but the hotel we used on both trips wasn't so great last time, but it was being refurbished so may be ok now (ParkHotel). I've parked a Volvo and 911 there.
Try Chateau Etoges near Reims, it's jolly nice and just fine parking.
There's a Holiday Inn just down the road from the Factory/Museum which has a pretty big underground car park and seems reasonably safe and secure. Not the height of luxury but does the job.
If driving a Porsche and if you ask nicely they'll also let you park your car outside the front of the museum to take some pictures as well.
We did that trip last summer...
Kent to Reims - photos at the old F1 circuit etc. very nice city to spend a night in - Best Western Premier Hotel de la Paix - underground parking but OK for the 911
Reims to Stuttgart - two nights at the V8 Hotel, good underground car park that the McLaren dealership also use (in a themed room, cos I'm a child
) - visit to Porsche Museum. Parking at the museum is good. I would recommend dinner at their Christophorus restaurant on the top floor. Also walked around Motorworld at the hotel
Stuttgart to Lucerne - Four nights at the Birgentsock Resort (really silly amounts of money but very nice indeed)
Lucerne to Luxembourg - one night there before coming home - Hotel Place d'Armes - offsite parking - they wanted to park it for me but I said no and drove it there with the hotel guy in the passenger seat
Excellent trip!

I wanted to do this but was a bit scared - should have just done it as there were a few Porsche hire cars already parked there.

I took a chance and asked the lady on the ticket desk and she said "of course, your car has come home"
While it was there and I was taking pictures a young couple came up and asked if I could take their picture next to it which was a bit embarrassing but I obliged while my wife was killing herself laughing in the back ground.
We're going back in July as we couldn't do the factory tour when we were there due to the pandemic. Looking forwards to that.
Oh, by the way, I was going to ask you if the Alfa bed broke while you were in the V8 Hotel but perhaps that's a bit too personal

Love it - my wife would have been doing the same
We missed the factory tour too as the idiot planning the trip forgot about it being closed for the summer break
The Alfa bed survived surprisingly!
Did this in September last year, 3 weeks after taking delivery of my car. Went to Nurburgring and then to Stuttgart afterwards. We stayed in the V8 Hotel also and visited the Mercedes Museum the following day. Was a great trip and really enjoyed the whole experience.

If you’re not fussy Mercure is walking distance from the Museum with secure underground car park. Clean room and good breakfast.
We arrived at dinner time at Stuttgart, then:
Day one we did 4hr+ lunch at Mercedes Museum (it’s massive) then back to the hotel and used the tram (very easy) to travel to town centre for some sightseeing and dinner.
Day two we spent the morning at Porsche museum (before heading to the ‘ring).
Keep hold of your Mercedes tickets and show them at Porsche, you get discount on admission.
Most museums in Germany close on Monday FYI.

At weekends Porsche have their own display / hire cars in front of the museum so can be a bit tricky. Weekdays are fine though.
Thanks everyone some really good info! Wife is really onboard for the trip also so should be good fun. Leaning towards staying an the V8 Hotel at the moment.

Yep, looks sensational!
I sense it may have been a wife pleaser to get Porsche focused Summer holiday over the line?
Would have been in this household anyway.

It was a little bit of that
- Porsche themed first half (although she did enjoy the museum, I think!) followed by a few days relaxing. They have three hotels on the site and we stayed at the cheapest but it still worked out at about £850 a night for bed and breakfast. The best hotel we’ve ever stayed at and was a fantastic treat but one that I suspect won’t be repeated anytime soon.
You can see where the cash goes - it’s on the other side of the lake to the town so they have a little boat to get you across - free if you’re staying there. £90 return if you aren’t!!
We were there last weekend, great city, very friendly locals.
This is useful:

The Mercedes museum is spectacular, the ladies in the group thought it far superior to the Porsche museum.
We had a day trip to Rotenburg which was extremely nice, I cannot recommend that enough.
Meals out were relatively inexpensive by UK standards, top quality beers.
Stuttgart itself is slightly let down by a fairly appalling selection of roads that dominate the periphery of the centre, the train lines occupy a sizeable chunk going north. Avoid walking in the cycle lanes as the cyclists tend to have a meltdown.
We also checked out the Corbusier museum which was interesting
I am sure you will have splendid fun

As a Porsche fan, I think the ladies in your group were right. The layout, building and general setup was better at Mercedes IMHO. However, Porsche Museum is good too and it'd be boring if they were the same style.

There are some
really
nice roads in the black forest area too.....
P.S and definitely worth the OP to go to the Merc museum too.
Took a friend from Cologne on a road trip in my 928GTS in 2000. We set off on the Sunday of the Belgian GP, towards Munich, for the BMW museum. Along the way we paused for petrol & coffee in time to see that pass on the tv ( Mika taking Michael around the other side of Zonta). Spent the first night in an old monastery ( I think) converted into a hostel.
BMW museum was ok, if a bit underwhelming.
Onwards to Stuttgart - friends of friends offered us their apartment for a couple days ( were away somewhere).
First up was Mercedes museum - it's brilliant. Allow a day, there's a lot to see.. Following day, we visited Porsche.
A rewarding trip.

We had a recent trip which took in all of the above, Mercedes visit particularly good.
For the driving roads we did Baden-Baden -> Freudenstadt, back into France and more French D roads up to Calais. I don't think you'll be disappointed.
As mentioned, if you have time then turn off autoroutes, autobahns and toll roads on Waze or sat nav and drive the old RNs in France and B roads in Germany. We did this last year to Italy and back including the Porsche Museum and had the best European road trip ever. Yes it took probably twice as long but it was much more scenic and enjoyable and the bonus was we came across very few lorries and caravans which made it even better.
The road you want to drive in Germany is the B500 through the Black Forest that goes North to Baden-Baden from Switzerland. It gets busy with bikers in the summer especially weekends but is worth doing if you're in the area anyway.
If anyone is interested our trip this July is:
Calais - Reims, overnight stop
Reims - Mulhouse, 2 night stop to go to the Schlumpf Museum in Mulhouse
Mulhouse to Baden-Baden via the B500 then over to Stuttgart, 3 nights in Stuttgart to go to the Porsche Museum and Factory Tour on day 1 and the Mercedes Museum on day 2,
Stuttgart-Luxembourg, overnight stop on the way home.
Happy to answer any questions on this if you have them.

Probably repeating a few things but:
Black Forest/Baden-Baden/Nurburging are great and can be en-route to Stuttgart.
Lake Constanz is very pretty and there's a Zeppelin museum at Friedrichshafen, as well as Auto-Salon Singen not that far away (an amazing sportscar dealer).
Munich is a great city and far superior to Stuttgart as a city (old town, beer halls and the Deutsche Museum is very good for transport/science).
Hitlers Eagles nest is within reach at Berchtesgaden, as are King Ludwigs castles (Neuschwanstein etc) if you have extra days.
I also agree that the Mercedes museum is by far the most impressive, BMW is a big museum, but has a poor layout and Porsche is relatively small but has the cars we all love most.
The Porsche restaurant is good and is where they provide lunch as a part of a factory collection.

We travelled all over Europe when we were kids and went to Lake Constanz in 1972. I found it fascinating that we had to take our passports on the paddle steamer to go to a different country and was a real adventure. We stopped off there last year and went to Konstanz for the day and it all came flooding back walking around the old city and the port. We also went to Munich in 1972 and saw the Olympic Stadium which was unlike anything I'd seen before. So grateful to my parents for giving me the travel bug so young and being able to see so much before mass travel changed the world.

Yes, we had a trip to Baden Baden a few years ago and did an 06.00 hoon. The roads there are seriously easy to have fun on……
We stayed at a very nice hotel not far from the museum called the Waldhotel. Excellent rooms and not silly money.
Someone mentioned a side trip to Berchtesgaden and if you have time it is a wonderful area to visit especially in summer. There is fantastic scenery ( Lake Konigsee for example) and lovely roads.
All booked for the end of May! Thanks for everyones input!

Excellent recommendation - we've booked that for our first stopover near Reims and will report back!
We're then staying at the Meridien in Stuttgart for a couple of nights. It's got underground secure parking so hopefully no issues there. We're doing the factory tour in the morning, lunch at the Christophorus restuarant, followed by the Museum tour. Not going to get a chance to do the MB museum as we're on a bit of a time schedule sadly.
And finally another night in Reims at the LOISIUM Wine & Spa Hotel Champagne which looks pretty decent!
A few nights away without the kids, in the 911, driving some lovely roads and eating and drinking well! Can't wait!
Also if this hasn't already been said, worth contacting the museum before you go to see if there are any factory tour tickets available for whilst you are there ?
I did, and there was

Good point, but yes have booked the factory tour tickets already as that’s one of the main reasons I want to go!

We stayed there on our way back from Switzerland with our dearly departed R8 and it was great. We didn't book any of the champagne houses ahead of time and the only one that would let us in was Borel-Lucas Champagne. The proprietor is a tall, very funny man who offered to carry a box of wine back to the hotel for us so my wife didn't have to.
Make sure you book a seat for dinner - we ended up in the bistro bit but again the staff were wonderful and the burger deserved the legion d'honneur.
We were invited to park the 964RS' in front of the museum on the condition that we put an absorbent mat under the engines of our 964's .... didn't the museum know that Porsche solved the 964 oil leaks years ago ???
There were NO leaks
I've only been to the Porsche museum 5 or 6 times ,since 2008 .
Also been to Mercedes twice .
Especially good visit when they have an anniversary special display , went to the 911 50 years ,the 917 and 914 combined 50 years , the trans axle era 40 years .
Might have to go back again this summer .

Could those who have been, advise on the cost of the trip including hotels, ferry crossings etc.
So much will depend on the type of hotel you stay in and what facilities you want plus length of stay etc. but for the trip we're doing this year (see details above) I'm budgeting around £3k all in.
Just wanted to return to this thread now we’re back!! What a great trip, especially just the two of us without kids!!
We set off from MK at 7am on the Sunday morning and took the channel tunnel across. Top tip, when you make your booking say that you’ve got bikes on the roof and then you can go into the ‘Large’ carriage with buses, camper vans, etc. The benefit being that it is much wider, with no gradients, and you’re very unlikely to curb a wheel.
We arrived in France and took a gentle 80 mph cruise across to Le Château D'Etoges near Reims. That was a great recommendation by a fellow PH’er on here. Beautiful old chateau surrounded by a moat. Plenty of parking - my 911 found itself in good company! We had an amazing 5 course dinner with lots of champagne!
The next morning there was the option of a champagne breakfast but as we were driving sadly couldn’t take advantage.
Set off at 10am and headed for Stuttgart. It was exactly 500km door-to-door. Once in Germany we found the roads to much busier than in France. Although they did have the added benefit of a few derestricted sections where I could briefly put my foot down a bit.
Stuttgart was very very busy, with lots of roadworks and general construction. We opted to stay at the Le Méridien Stuttgart Hotel which was a short 10 minute walk to the centre with lots of lively bars and restaurants. All surprisingly good value for money and had a really fun atmosphere due to it being a public holiday.
The hotel was decent enough (possibly a bit tired in places) but had excellent (and empty) underground parking. The ramp getting out was a little steep so something to consider if you’re in something a little lower than a normal 911.
We’d booked the factory tour for the Tuesday morning. We could have driven there but had planned on having a few drinks at lunch so opted for a taxi instead. It took about 20 mins to get there. The factory tour starts off at the Porsche Museum and you then walk across to the actual factory. Our tour group was fairly small (4 in total) as some of the others guests hadn’t turned up. The overall tour was 2 hours and consisted of the engine assembly line, trim shop and then the actual vehicle assembly line. We didn’t have full access as they were building some prototype vehicles and so had to wait until these were fully out of sight. We mainly visited the very last section where they were putting in soft-tops, seats, wheels, etc. Still really fascinating to watch. You can’t take any photos or video as they confiscate your mobile phone before the tour starts.
The biggest thing that surprised me was the smell of cigarettes in the factory. At regular points there were little rest areas for the workers with vending machines. They would be happily smoking away literally 30 feet from the production line which I found a bit backwards in 2023?!?!
Once the tour was over we headed back to the museum where we’d booked lunch at the Christopherous Restaurant. Amazing view but, in our opinion, very underwhelming food. After lunch we spent some time in the actual museum before getting a taxi back to the hotel.
The next day we left Stuttgart again at 10am and, just before leaving Germany, managed to briefly hit 145 mph in a derestricted section. Arrived back in Reims to stay at the Loisium Wine & Spa Hôtel in Champagne. It’s a very nice modern hotel with spa and outdoor heated pool. Lots of champagne drunk around the pool and with our evening meal!!!!
Set off the next day at around 11am and arrived at the eurotunnel at about 3pm. Straight on a train and back in the UK only to battle with the dartford tunnel crossing and M25.
All in all an absolutely brilliant trip, although I’d probably spend more time in each of the hotels if we were to go again!
