Anyone know what it is or if its a problem?
Regards
James
When I had a slight rattle at certain RPMs, it turned out to be a loose bolt on the exhaust system. At certain RPM, it would vibrate the loose bolt and make a nice rattle sound. Tightened it up and back to new.
I also have a buzzing noise around 3k when cold. It just started doing it last weekend. It almost sounds like the serpentine belt is rubbing on something... But I hope it's just a loose exhaust bolt. It is very strange that it only happens within a small RPM band and goes away after only a couple minutes of driving.
Oh, I should mention that mine is a 2005 987.1 Boxster S.
Could be the fuel pressure regulator
Wouldn't that buzz all the time and not just when the engine is cold?
After paying closer attention to my buzzing, I found that it only happens when the engine is cold, in fifth gear (tiptronic), and at 2300 rpm.
Did anyone ever track this noise down? My car is making a solid buzz from 3000-3300 RPM when warm (not Hot). I don't think it does it when cold, but I don't rev high until warmed up. I took a quick look and tapped the exhaust around with a rubber mallet and didn't see anything obvious. The only possible source that I've identified is the aluminum cover/plate under the engine. When tapped with the rubber hammer, it makes a quick buzz like noise.
I had replaced my water pump, belt, and thermostat a few months ago proactively, but don't believe this started until afterwards.
One possibility is catalytic converter going bad. When the mesh inside starts to disintegrate it starts buzzing when the car warms up and creates the impression the rattle comes from the exhaust system. Just my 2 cents. Been there done that.
That was actually one of my first guesses, though with only 39k miles I doubted it. Nothing was obviously loose on exhaust after a quick review. This is a harsh buzz though, not just a rattle that I'd heard on other vehicles with a loose heat shield.
