Reported cause
The normal problem is the gas pump your station uses.

There is this one nozzle at a particular gas station where I can never get my gas tank filled beyond 3/4 full.

I can usually get a full tank of gas filled without any problem.

I have a favorite Shell station I use now with all of my cars because it works well.

Suggestion
Things to try: Fill manually not automatically, wait for the gas to "settle" in the tank before toping off, try the tip above and you should also check the accuracy of the car's gauge (miles per gallon is a good check).

Suggestion
I only remember that this particular pump does it, of course, after I pull up to it and start filling - then when it kicks out (through most of the fill) I always curse that I didn't remember!

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

About 50% of the time my needle is still not at full...
Hi, I was wondering if any of you experiences this problem at the gas station:
Ever since I got my car in May, I have trouble filling up the gas tank. It always refuses to take more gas at about 3/4 and keeps clicking on me. I have to spend another 5-10min clicking the gun to force more gas (about 2-3 gals). It's so annoying.
So I took my car in for W802 campaign today, and told them to check it. Service rep just told me they filled up fine at 76 gas station and said it's probably a pressure problem and that every gas station is different. The problem is I only go to these 2 gas stations around my house (cheapest around the area) and they both do the same (both Chevrons).
I can live with it, but it's really annoying at the gas station. I never know when it's going to be full, and I don't want to over fill it. About 50% of the time my needle is still not at full...
My question is, do you guys have similar experience? At any particular gas station? I really think something is wrong with the gas tank!
I had that problem but I found if I set the nozzle to a slower setting (no full squeeze), it fills up my tank in one shot. Do you have the hands-free nozzle levers on at your gas station, that works best for me.
In fact I tried the slower setting (recommended by some articles about getting more gas out of your money), but it was so slow that I couldn't stand it.
If I remembered correctly, it only got $5 of gas after I finished cleaning the windshield!
I will be patient
next
time and see if that helps. Thanks.
have you tried adjusting the angle at which the nozzle goes in to the gas tank? when i insert the nozzle at more of an angle as opposed to horizontal i am able to pump gas more quickly, and resulting with a full tank.
:2cents:
When I had a Mercedes CLK, this always happened BUT only at certain gas stations (for me it was SHELL). The dealer told me it was a pressure problem of some sort (I can't recall specifically what it was). Anyhow, they didn't fix it. If it helps, I also noticed that when I don't go on the max level/lever at the pump, it's easier to pump a full tank. Try one level/tab lower like Lexicon stated.
On my
Cayman S
, I haven't had problems yet (knock on wood).
Yeah put the nozzle in at a slight angle and not all the way in but be carefull not to overfill and get gas on the paint. By the way I have to do this with my
BMW
all the time.
I also have the same problem as you. I always have to force more gas in. And it also happened to be Chevron which is the only gas station I go. Btw, my friend told me that he saw an article whereby Chevron is the best gas for
Porsche
. Maybe got to do with the Techron or something.
just my 2 cent
You need to be more scientific to discover whether the problem is with your car. I suspect it is with the pump. Try 10 different stations (Shell, Sunoco, 76, BP/Amoco, etc.) I have had problems in the past with some stations but not others. I have a favorite Shell station I use now with all of my cars because it works well.
This is the result of pollution control devices by the station you visit and can vary by station not necessarily brand. CA has the most restrictive controls.
SF - not necessarily. I fill up at three or four different locations (all Shell) and there is one pump at one particular station that does this only. No vapour recovery or such in Alberta such as the California systems btw.
I only remember that this particular pump does it, of course, after I pull up to it and start filling - then when it kicks out (through most of the fill) I always curse that I didn't remember!
When I try to fill up my wife's diesel it takes "all day".
The pump keeps cutting off. I finally got an "attendant" to come out and look at the pump and he showed me how to angle the nozzle for a slightly better flow.
The
Cayman
is no problem to fill up. I just put the nozzle on full and let it go.

Just filled up at a Chevron, since that is where the issue shows for me all the time. When the nozzle is fully inserted, trigger pointing down, the tank fills to about 10 gallons (3/4 full) and then the overflow preventer cuts off the flow.
If you pull the nozzle back out about one inch (still is deep within the filler hole) and raise the handle up as far as possible (thus nozzle outlet is down as far as possible) and hold it in this position, you can pull the trigger fully and it will rapidly fill up the rest of the tank.
The angle of the
Cayman
filler pipe must be just right so that gas splashes the Chevron nozzles in a way that makes them cut off. Changing the position of the nozzle outlet for the last few gallons only takes a minute, so I guess Chevron is back on my list of acceptable gas stations...
Thank you everyone for your valuable experiences and suggestions. I will try the different methods mentioned to see which one works best at my gas station.
gas pump
Aye, I noticed the same issue with my car.
Some pumps are more problematic than others. There is this one nozzle at a particular gas station where I can never get my gas tank filled beyond 3/4 full. Other stations, I just rotate the nozzle and fill it slowly. I can usually get a full tank of gas filled without any problem.
Fuel filling 3/4 only
Hey guys, when I fill my cayman with gas, it only fill up 3/4 of the way everytime. I did a search on this forum and some people have the same problem while others don't. I don't understand...is this a common problem for porsche cars in general and are there any solutions? Some people suggest filling it slowly(slow hook on the gas handle) but it still fills only 3/4 of the way. I'm only filling around 12 gallons each time and it's driving me insane!!
Or do you guys think I should bring it back to the dealer and maybe they can fix it? If there is a solution, please let me know. Thanks!!
Turn the pump handle 45 degrees and you should not have any more problems. I could not get my car filled until I found this trick. It was posted on this site by an other owner.
Yes we did discuss it before. The normal problem is the gas pump your station uses. I'd say try another brand/station but I'm guessing most CA stations will be impacted in some similar manner. My experience in the industry suggests you should shop around though even in CA. It is all in the name of pollution control and spillage and how it the requirements are addressed in your state.
Things to try: Fill manually not automatically, wait for the gas to "settle" in the tank before toping off, try the tip above and you should also check the accuracy of the car's gauge (miles per gallon is a good check). It may be full but reading only 3/4 full which would mean a warranty repair is in order.
I'm in Singapore and all the gas stations here use American equipment, I've not had an issue with premature stoppage. In Malaysia I do, though, all the time. All equipment is the same.
Just a pure wag since I haven't lived in Ca for years. If they're still using the vapor recover boots on the nozzle with the second hose back to the tank maybe there's a restriction in it causing enough back pressue to trip the pump off. Pulling up the boot enough to break the seal would likely prove this one way or the other.
One caution though. The boots usually have a bit of gas in them that will drip places you'd rather it not. Wrapping a rag around it like you'll see any bike rider do used to take care of this.
Just noticed your statement on Chevron being the best gas for
Porsche
. I attended a seminar for new
Porsche
owners recently and they "Unofficially" said they recommend Chevron gas only. However, he did stress he was not allowed to officially recommend Chevron.
This same issue occurs on older
911
's. To resolve this issue we would insert the nozzle 180 degrees. Worked like a charm. I have not had a problem with the
Cayman
so I have not tried it. But I do it on the
911
all the time.
