My power steering pump began to make noises at low speed, sounding like brief flatulence when turning with any amount of throttle applied (most apparent in parking areas and intersections). Curiously, it would be absent when I turned while OFF the accelerator pedal. It would also make a little noise when I stabbed the throttle in 1st gear going straight.
Dealer found a leak coming from the front steering rack, a $3400 replacement job. Honestly, this kind of problem coming 5 months out of warranty would have been a big turn-off for my first real sports car, but the dealer asked Porsche to step in and succeeded.
I took a look at the old rack; fluid was leaking out of a failed gasket in the side of the assembly and making a mess in the cardboard box. Dealer says it's not a common problem, but as I said, it did give me a big scare.
I've never tracked my car, but has anyone else had this experience?
A straight up gasket leak/failure is not impossible, but based on my 2nd hand info rare.
No direct experience, thank goodness, but the word I get is from the techs I talk to what is less rare is a high pressure relief valve in a power steering line can fail and feeds high pressure, too high a pressure, to the rack.
This forces fluid out of the rack seals. (Though I guess a gasket could "blow" out first.) The fluid is captured by the rack dust boots so one doesn't see any leak sign.
Generally the only clue the owner has something's amiss is when the power steering pump makes a racket because it is low on fluid.
But by this time the pump is shot. The rack is shot. And of course the valve that caused the whole mess is shot.
Hey guys. Just found out my Power Steering rack is bad. Had a little loss of fluid every 14 months. Mechanic decided to look closer this time. 987s has 33k on her.
