Reported cause
Thanks for the warning, the shop I took it to confirmed it was the switch and they quoted $500 to fix.
Leading evidence: 'switch and they quoted $500' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'switch and they quoted $500' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check by the dealer' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I checked the fuse and it is good but understand there are also relays somewhere in the back that could be the issue but can't find any post that tell me where they are.

While testing the operation of the spoiler with the engine off, I noticed a slight grinding-type noise coming from the mechanism that raises and lowers the spoiler.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I tried to raise the spoiler with the manual switch (car washin' switch), but no go, and no
LED
indication.
I got a guy at the track last weekend to verify it was raising (thanks Lou), so the automatic function is OK, motor is OK, fuse is OK, etc.
If anybody knows what pins I could jumper on the plug that goes to the switch housing to see if the switch is defective I would certainly appreciate it. Or, which pins on the switch housing I could ohm check to make sure the circuit is being made by the switch.
If I can't narrow it down to the switch, I guess I will end up needing a scan.
Thanks,
Chuck
Did you push and HOLD the button in for several seconds? It takes more than a quick poke. Just hold the button down until you hear the motor stop and the yellow
LED
indicator lights up.
I tried the quick poke, or "press button briefly" as the manual states, and holding it for several seconds. No effect in either case.
If I recall correctly, when it was working, it would extend with a quick poke on the button. Only during the retract did I have to hold the button. Thanks for the suggestion though.
Is there really nobody out there with a wiring diagram for an '06 CS?
Cheers,
Chuck
Problem solved. It was the "combined switch", or more specifically, the circuit board inside the combined switch, PN 997.613.133.00 for my car, two switch unit; spoiler and PSM OFF.
Ohmed unit and found open, pulled housing apart and found a burnt trace on the circuit board.
Thanks to Ryan at
Suncoast
, the part was just over $50, instead of over $90 from local sources. Keep it up
Suncoast
, I don't know how you guys do it, but even with shipping you beat everyone else on price.
Cheers,
Chuck
There's different part numbers for different configurations depending on what options you have,
PASM
, Sport mode, etc. Best bet is to give them a call with your VIN and they can get you the right part.
The switch isn't too hard to pull out, but it was kind of a hassle to break it open to verify it had a burnt trace. Make sure it isn't just a fuse or something before buying parts. Is the spoiler still extending/retracting automatically?
Chuck
The spoiler activation button on my 2007
911S
Cab stopped working.
LED
light would not illuminate nor would the spoiler deploy. (Spoiler would still deploy automatically at speed.) Purchased a new three-switch panel from
Suncoast
for $85 and installed it myself. Problem solved. Simple DIY after consulting YouTube for a video on how to remove the side panels (3 torx screws each side) of the center portion that houses the radio, climate control and spoiler/
PASM
/PSM panel. Can raise spoiler manually now via the button! While testing the operation of the spoiler with the engine off, I noticed a slight grinding-type noise coming from the mechanism that raises and lowers the spoiler. Did some research and found there are lubrication holes on each of the tubes that house the raising mechanism. Applied some graphite lubricate via a squirt tube and viola no more noise. Raises and lowers perfectly now!
Guys I have a 987
Boxster
I acquired a few months ago with 62K miles and everything but the spoiler works well. I did check the fuse and it is ok. I get no warning messages but the dash switch does not work nor does it rise automatically at speed. I had my wife follow me at speed to confirm. How to I begin diagnostics? In the thread above there was mention of a switch being fried. Is that the center panel spoiler switch or a relay located elsewhere? Would appreciate any insight or guidance that can be provided related to steps in diagnosing this issue. YouTube videos, instructions, anything would be appreciated. In another thread there was discussion of replacing replays. Where are those relays located? Thanks.
Keep in mind that the 987 spoiler can be enabled/disabled easily with a simple menu choice using a
PIWIS
tool. The fact that yours is not operating normally outside of the switch or throwing warnings may mean that the previous owner had it disabled for some reason. I would have this checked first by a dealer or mechanic with the
PIWIS
tool before going on any possible wild goose chase elsewhere just yet for things that may all be operating just fine
Thanks ICNU. This car is a "winter project" so I am attempting to do this kind of non-major engine work myself. If the spoiler is turned off using the menu in the
PIWIS
, would that also prevent the dash lift switch from working as well? Even though the car had a clean car fax, inspection underneath revealed replacement of left rear suspension components leading me to believe there "may" be a spoiler issue and the previous owner may have had the spoiler turned off to prevent detection during the sale. I checked the fuse and it is good but understand there are also relays somewhere in the back that could be the issue but can't find any post that tell me where they are. Can you tell me where to find them? My
next
thought was to take out the rear trunk liner and see if there is any damage to the spoiler track itself. If nothing visible I may attempt to use a spare battery to activate the lift motor to see if the dash switch is the problem. If the motor works and the spoiler lifts, then I'll see if I can get the
PIWIS
checked by the dealer. Trying to avoid high costs for things I can likely do myself. Any assistance would be appreciated.
I never tore into the spoiler hardware on my previous 987 so unfortunately cant help there. I know my current
981
uses a hall sensor back at the spoiler motor itself that detects if the spoiler is actually deploying. I will still get a dash warning even if pulling the fuse or unplugging the spoiler motor plug behind the bumper because there is no way to fool the sensor if its not seeing the outcome it expects. The
981
no longer has the
PIWIS
menu option to disable the spoiler so one must resort to a complicated mechanical hack to trick the sensor or have the car recoded as a
GT4
.
The fact that you aren't getting any warnings at all is what made me think that someone may have coded the spoiler to stay down. I would personally start by seeing if a dealer or indy shop could quickly take a look with the device and see if this is the case.
