Surprisingly I found the reduction in rear tyre roar (replaced with a glorious induction and engine note from the symposer) was another really big contributor to daily driving pleasure.

I think I can get my Cayman S built or slightly used for $70k and would entertain spending that much on a 911.

If I build a new one, I'm sure I'll get the 6 speed, but if I buy one on the lot or slightly used, I will also consider the fine PDK.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

I am starting to really itch to sell my '04 M3 (with a grand total of 22k miles) and get back into the Porsche fold. I have driven, and loved, the new Cayman -- base w/PDK, S w/PDK and S w/6 speed. Well, I liked the base but loved the S. If I build a new one, I'm sure I'll get the 6 speed, but if I buy one on the lot or slightly used, I will also consider the fine PDK. The other car I am considering is probably a 2012 (or maybe 2011) 911 (997). The most recent 911 I have driven is an '08 or '09 Cab (PDK), which I didn't really like since it just isn't nearly as tight as a coupe. But I am pretty sure I would love a 911 coupe. I think I can get my Cayman S built or slightly used for $70k and would entertain spending that much on a 911. What would you do and why?

POST 2Original post

If you're considering a 997..... have a look at the GTS.

POST 3Original post

Agree completely with Downunder. Do a little homework on the GTS and you will appreciate that it is the 997 to get if you want a 997.

POST 4Original post

Yowza, the budget just keeps getting ratcheted up! lol

POST 5Original post

Never go by the asking price. I suspect these cars will sell around $10K less than asking price, maybe even a little more. The GTS is special, but not so rare it can command as much of a premium that some dealers ask.

POST 6Original post

If you're looking at a 2012 911, don't neglect the 991. I have owned both a 997 and a 991 and the 991 is a very different experience. I also looked at the 981 CS but ended up remaining in the 911 fold since the CS kept coming in at 85K for what I wanted in it. I see that my 997CS is now on a dealer lot asking 67K, it can probably be had for low 60"s. I was asking 60 but had no takers and traded in. Good luck either way.

POST 7Original post

Can you provide a link for your car? BTW, I think 991s are out of my price range as I have ratcheted the range up enough already...:hilarious:

POST 8Original post

It is at Porsche of Fairfield in Fairfield. CT. It is the Atlas Gray 997 with MT - never tracked, single owner. Ask for Scott.

POST 9Original post

FWIW, I think it's hard to provide a point of view without knowing whether this will be your daily driver and what's important to you in a car. I think the two beasts are different enough to make a comparison too disparate without knowing what you like.

POST 10Original post

It will be a daily driver, and I will put snow tires on it in the winter. However, I only drive 2-3k miles/year, although that could change a bit.

POST 11Original post

I think the 911 is a better daily driver (especially 991 due to the even keeled nature of the long wheelbase and the reduction in NVH). The token seats in the back may suck at accommodating human passengers but they contribute greatly to a sense of space. I'm not a big person (6 ft, 75kg) but there's something to be said about the room at the back contributing to a certain openness and less constriction, which in turn contributes to one's sense of comfort. You already know this, coming from an M3 with rear seats. Of course, the Cayman has the addition of a rear boot for stuff but it gets pretty hot in there and I never really used it... the frunk was all I ever really used, which the 911 has too, obviously. I used to drive a 987.2 Cayman S, then a 981 Boxster S and now a 991 C2 and the 991 is the most comfortable and truly fit for daily living. Surprisingly I found the reduction in rear tyre roar (replaced with a glorious induction and engine note from the symposer) was another really big contributor to daily driving pleasure. Plus I get to bring the kids with me once in a while. Other things may matter more to you, but that's my 2 cents. Good luck with your decision!

POST 12Original post

Thank you. That is very thought provoking and meaningful advice.

POST 13Original post

No problem. Let us know which way you're going but either way you can't go terribly wrong with a Porsche!
