Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Another one to watch is the wheel fitter who initially tightens the wheel bolts right up with the "air gun" impact wrench, then fetches the torque wrench and fits it to each wheel bolt which then immediately "click out" at the pre-set torque without actually being tightened any further.

The wheel bolts must be seen to be turned by the torque wrench when tightening and when the specific torque (turning effort) is reached, the torque wrench "clicks out" to prevent the bolt being tightened beyond the pre-set torque.

I have never been advised of this or asked about in the past and then had to virtually stand on the wheel brace to undo the bolts when changing wheels afterwards, even managed to shear a VW locknut socket because of this.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I'm having new rear tyres fitted this afternoon by a well known High St garage.
Has anyone here ever insisted they tighten to the torque stated in the owners manual ie 130Nm?
I have never been advised of this or asked about in the past and then had to virtually stand on the wheel brace to undo the bolts when changing wheels afterwards, even managed to shear a VW locknut socket because of this.
You want to go somewhere else to have tyres fitted then!! Any tyre fitter worth their salt will always check WITH A TORQUE WRENCH the torque of all the wheel nuts before they let you drive off.
Virtually all allow wheels use roughly the same torque so most fitters will use their standard setting for all and probably assume that most drivers don't know what "torque" is. If you want it checked specifically to 130NM just tell them!! They're working for you after all!!
Regards
Dave
Its something I was discussing wih Chris the other day when changing my tyres and we did end up using a torque wrench at 130nm as that made sense (although Chris managed to get them about right even before we used it
). Not sure what the settings/torque the tyre places have on the numatic tools
Theo
Should always be torqued to 130Nm or 95lb.ft.
It shouldn't take a massive amount of force to get them undone either unless they've rusted on. Use copper slip on the nut to stop this in the future.
A good tyre place might also stick a sticker on your steering wheel recommending you retest/ retighten the wheels after 50 miles driving...

A practise that indicates the recommended torque setting has been reached - but exceeded by an unknown quantity and may have been doubled..... Precisely what you don't with alloy wheels.
