Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

5 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I picked up on this smell whilst warming up a '98 996 at standstill. Not sure if this was caused by something random that got heated or whether this is a tell tale sign of something bad to come? or maybe it is a normal smell? The smell was coming from the exhaust suggesting it was the fumes from the rear that were causing this. Any ideas?

POST 2Original post

God knows....If there's nothing else of concern I suggest you drive it, these cars whiff all the time

POST 3Original post

Do you mean sulphur smell? That would be the cats burning cheap petrol, you been feeding it Supermarket 95 RON?

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

GT4 - I smelt it when the car was under the previous owner. What you say makes sense. I filled it with Shell V-power yesterday and that should improve things (I take it 98 RON or whatever it is is ok?)

POST 5Original post

That's what it shoud say on the sticker inside the petrol flap! Super (97/98/99 RON) is recommended and the engine design outpur is dependent on it. The slightly higher grades MAY give more power, you'll have to feel that for yourself. Premium (or normal at 95) works, but the ECU will down grade the performance because of the lower grade fuel. It may also lead to technical overheating (the iginition is advanced to prevent pinking - pre-detonation), although the cooling system may cope and you don't notice.
