Suggestion

There should be a small front spoiler (not full width) just set back from the front bumper to balance it as at high speed it will want to pick the nose up slightly.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi guys, new to the forum and looking for a bit of advice, looking at a car advertised as having an 'aero kit' which i like! However the rear wing looks completely different to others i have looked at.....the guy selling tells me thats because they are different,ie,gt3 kit and aero kit.Is this right. Oh,car is a 2001 c4 3.4. Thanks in advance.

POST 2Original post

Hi and welcome! Can you post up some pics of the car you are looking at and then we can tell you if it's a genuine aero-kitted car or not. ~ Maxie

POST 3Original post

The "Cup Aerokit" is the Mark 1 GT3-like Option Code: XAA The "Carrera Aerokit" is not based on a competition design Option Code: XAE

POST 4Original post

The GT3 kit is indeed different to the Carrera aerokit; post up a link / pic of the car and most people on here will be able to identify it as either of those (or even some sort of aftermarket kit). I have the aerokit on mine and like it a lot - only a GT3 should have a GT3 kit in my opinion (although I will conceed the full GT3 kit, including alloys and suspension etc. looks better than a Carrera with an aerokit, but it's just not the done thing in my book).

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classif...ode/da75aq/radius/1501/keywords/gt3?logcode=p Hopefully link works!! Thoughts/comments appreciated.

POST 6Original post

... thanks. Some of us just like rear-wipers and sunroofs! I think you will have to take your concerns up with Porsche, who offered all the bits officially from the factory. Although, the M030, Cup Aerokit, GT Fins and Sport Design wheels cost the first owner £7,695 in 2000, so they must have really liked them.

POST 8Original post

Like I said, the GT3 kit actually looks better in my opinion, personally I just don't think it should be on anything other than a GT3, obviously everyone has a different opinion and that's why there are probably as many permutations of 911 as a BMW Mini! 8) I like my rear wiper just fine, thanks - certainly need one in Manchester...

POST 9Original post

I meant my sunroof and wiper! (and the rear seats and handy four wheel drive, although the extra chassis stiffening from the C4 is my homage to the real, GT3, which uses the same shell). By the way, the 3.4 X51 is the sister to the GT3. The engines and Cup AeroKit (note: its note even officially called the GT3 kit) were both developed together by the Porsche Motorsport Division in case what became the actual GT3 failed racing regs and homologation. The 2WD (but C4 chassis) 3.4 X51 with Cup Aerokit was a model in its own right as the "Carrera Cup" in Germany and the oddly named "PowerUp" edition for Japan.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

any thoughts on the car? Good or bad all welcome!

POST 11Original post

My view? The ad is a bit confused. Is it 3.4 or 3.6? I'd guess 3.4, not the preferred choice. If you like bits of plastic dangling all over a basically honest car then bite his hand off. But he knows well it is overpriced, the word 'negotiable' is up there like a big neon apology. Offer him £15,000 and throw all the plastic away

POST 12Original post

Noted, thanks. You learn something new every day - I didn't realise there were so many variants / options in the 911 range...

POST 13Original post

OK, so my car is technically a DIY mongrel (ie the first owner had to individually spec an admittedly standard C4), but it is the closest spec they could get in the UK to a Carrera Cup / Carrera Power-Up. It just has the extra driven wheels (but requires the stiffened C4 chassis). As far as I can tell they actually paid more than a standard GT3 for the privilege as well. The point is, there are actually TWO official and distinct lines (developed as an insurance policy) that Porsche choose to fit with the Cup Aerokit: GT3 and Carrera Cup/Power-Up

POST 14Original post

As per GT4s comments, that's a Carrera kit which does provide slightly more downforce than an electric spoiler but is more aesthetic than performance orientated. There should be a small front spoiler (not full width) just set back from the front bumper to balance it as at high speed it will want to pick the nose up slightly. There are a couple of tell tales that the car has had some light mods, such as clear indicators, rear lights and alloy pedals. At first glance you might think that's bad, but on the other hand it can also be a sign of being someones pride and joy so don't let it stop you. Whether you like wings or not, I think it's worth further investigation. Apart from the obvious like HPI and test drive etc, check out the big white sticker under the bonnet. The codes will tell you which options were fitted at the factory. List of code options attached. Personally I have the Aero Cup kit and love it. Different look but it seriously makes a huge difference on track that I wouldn't want to be without  Good luck, let us know how you get on :thumb:

POST 15Original post

I spotted the alloy pedals (and chromed plastic wheel bolt caps). The clear lights/indicators were, however, implemeted from inception with the C4s. The car is a 3.4 (sometimes Autotrader's helpful bots aren't helpful - probably confused by 2001 996 model, which was changeover year) The wheel rim has been selectively painted (ie main wheel masked and rim resprayed|). The rear deck appears possibly to be sporting a 997esque "Carrera S" script. It appears to have auto-levellers, but no Litronics? (or at least there is no visible manual beam dial on the dash) The front splitter is missing as noted by oze172: £60 if you want it, to be honest the first speedbump will probably remove it (pointless on my M030'd 996).

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
