This is due to the potential for "losing" many kms every time its moved country, and potentially any damage records that might be recorded on national databases but with no international data available.

The most logical choice, as some of you have suggested, is to change the floor mats (putting them black instead of red) and possibly changing the steering wheel to a black 718.

But in your opinion, this yellow/red contrast that many people don't like (although I like it), can it be avoided or mitigated by using black/dark films on the windows?

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Good morning, I found in my city, in Italy, an used Porsche Cayman 981 S form a private seller at a good price for the current market. The car has a good price for the italian market and it is yellow (exterior), and with a dark red leather (interior). it is fully equipped, like a gts, it has pasm, chrono, sports exhaust, heated steering wheel, seats with memory, etc. What do you think about ? Since being able to resell the car in a few years is an important point for me, I would like to know if you like this colour combination.

POST 2Original post

It’s not to my taste, I think it is an odd combo to have. If price is very good, and you weren’t sure on the colour combo, a possible solution could be a wrap? Though resale down the line may not be helped.

POST 3Original post

McDonalds spec and I’m not loving it…. Jokes aside it’s a very strong combo which if you’re buying to keep as you love it is one thing, if you’re buying it with an eye on resale I’d personally avoid.

POST 4Original post

I like both the interior and the exterior, but it’s a bit challenging on the eye to have both on the same car. As has been said, if you love it, go for it. Whilst it may be a bit harder to find a buyer when you offload, you’ve said it’s up for a good price so it should all come out in the wash.

POST 5Original post

It's a no from me, like the yellow not with red

POST 6Original post

Jelly and Custard. There is a Cayman in the UK that has been on the market with that colour combination.

POST 7Original post

I quite like it, but then I appreciate most won’t. My old Cayman GTS had yachting blue leather, which I thought was really nice and different. When I sold it I was told a lot of dealers steered clear of them as they’re hard to sell.

POST 9Original post

Spec similar to my old 981 S, I loved it (apart from mine was red with black interior). If you can live with the interior buy it! I think I could live with that combination, I however couldn't live with the burgundy with salmon combination I looked at once.

POST 10Original post

It’s a no from me. Couldn’t live with the colour combination.

POST 11Original post

You’ll probably get hammered when selling on, especially if trading to a dealer…. It’s a limited market with that colour combination.

POST 12Original post

Love the exterior but couldn’t live with that interior. Difficult resell I’d imagine.

POST 13Original post

I'd rather be driving that in Italy than a 'normal' colour combo in the UK. If you like it, buy it and enjoy it.

POST 14Original post

It wouldn't be one for me, but at the right price anything will sell - hence why you are interested in buying it. If you are happy to buy cheap and sell cheap then buy it and enjoy it knowing you have less money sitting out there in the street. If you are buying it cheap hoping to sell it at market price when you decide to sell it then probably not a great plan.

POST 15Original post

Thats a great combo, RHD cars are always specified in such boring combo's, don't take anyones advice from a RHD country.

POST 16Original post

Curious about the steering wheel, looks like an older wheel compared to what should be fitted to a 981??

POST 21 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

thank you for your answers. But in your opinion, this yellow/red contrast that many people don't like (although I like it), can it be avoided or mitigated by using black/dark films on the windows? That way the car will look more like a classic yellow/black car on the outside, while on the inside... well we're on the inside, you can't see much of the yellow bodywork... I must also say that the red is very dark, the photos don't show it (you can understand it from the 4th pictures), it's actually a dark bordeaux, very different objectively from the fiery red of the McDonald's that some have mentioned The car was originally in Abu Dhabi 6 years, then did 2 years in the czech republic and finally was imported to italy to be resold In italy we have many basic black, white and grey 981s for sale, but the super-equipped porsche 981 S is virtually unobtainable. It was originally offered for sale at 58,000 EUR, the seller would let me have it for 50,000 EUR including a Porsche service before final delivery (it is like 49.000 EUR). (1 EUR = 0,88GBP, but in italy we have in general the prices for the Porsche are higher than UK) It has got 56000 miles, it s a 2014, but it seems brand new. Exceptional/perfect conditions. This yellow 981S also has carbon trim, the carbon is even on the underside when one enters the car in the cayman s (bright) inscription, and on the sterring wheel. It also looks like it came out of the dealer despite being 9 years old, with the porsche services done every year in the official porsche centre. The alternative is to get for the same price a 2013 basic black 981 (not S), black interior, 20" wheels, sports exhaust and sport chrono, but alcantara interior, no carbon trim, no heated steering wheel, no memory seat and so on, but only 32000 miles. Here the pictures: Thanks a lot for your comments and opinions Edited by Andre_Sant on Monday 23 January 15:41

I must be missing something here but if you like it, what difference does it make what anyone else on here thinks? If it is a well specced car, good history, in good condition and relatively cheap where is the problem - buy it and enjoy it. When you come to sell it who knows what will happen, there will be people that will love it and you only need one buyer to sell a car. If that doesn't happen you move on to plan b and sell it cheaper than others on sale because you bought it cheap and have the money in hand.

POST 23Original post

Not a fan of dark tinting the windows, but might be different in Italy. Exterior colour I like, interior I like, but much prefer that colour combined with black for the door rolls, dash top, steering wheel and mats. But, as many have said, it’s what you like that matters, and it should always brighten your day.

You are defending the colour. You love the colour. You can’t be the only one across the entire LHD continent that would like it, resale wise. Why buy a car based on public consensus, it’s your car, buy what you want, not what a forum suggests. Therefore, get the yellow.

POST 27 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

thank you very much for all your answers. I appreciated a lot. some have asked why I care so much about the opinion of people on a forum, the reason is that the resale factor is important to me. so I took a few days to hear from various car dealers, who told me that the car with this type of colouring would have a smaller market, but still would. So I didn't find any dealers who told me: no, we would never buy it back at a reasonable price. Regarding the colours: yes, if the car was black inside also according to my aesthetic taste it would be better. But you can not fine a 981 or 981S yellow in all europe (not-uk), except this one that i found in my city. In general my best exterior colours for a Porsche are Blue and yellow. I also inquired at various specialist in leather, but they all told me that changing the colours internally would be an extremely expensive and absurd job. The most logical choice, as some of you have suggested, is to change the floor mats (putting them black instead of red) and possibly changing the steering wheel to a black 718. Lastly, could put dark seat covers on, or, in the most extreme case, buy other black 18-way seats (which, however, used ones cost around 4000 euro a pair in Europe on ebay). ___ There are two other alternatives, both very different: 1) get a blue 981 BASE in Munich, Germany. Not a very quick route for me as I would have to buy in another country. The 981 would be the base model at 47000 EUR with black interior. No leather, no chrono, no memory seats, but yes PSE. The final price is the same of the yellow because I have to pay the import costs. you can see the car here: https://youtu.be/Arl9sBMhZEE 2) totally different kind: a 997.1 4 sport version TARGA manual transmission, grey and black at 63000 EUR (but with much less "sound"). (the seller is, again, in my city).

I don't know what Porsche were thinking - not only does it look awful, it doesn't even have paddles. The sports steering wheel (the one shown above on that Black Cayman) is nicer, but still not great IMO. I really like the multi-function 718 wheel. How did you get this done and, if you don't mind my asking, how much did it cost? Thanks.

POST 29Original post

Regarding the yellow / red Cayman, I'd be more concerned that it was in Dubai & Czech before ending up in Italy. This is due to the potential for "losing" many kms every time its moved country, and potentially any damage records that might be recorded on national databases but with no international data available. Personally I'd take that basic black low miles Cayman. I hate black cars, but for any 10+ yr old sport car I think good provenance is more important than a few silly options, I do subscribe to the view that Porsche sports cars are for driving and therefore generally best in their basic versions. Not everyone will subscribe to this view, of course!

POST 30Original post

I subscribe that those thinking like this: "some have asked why I care so much about the opinion of people on a forum, the reason is that the resale factor is important to me." should not buy yellow cars with red leather interiors (this is not a criticism of the OPs factor concern or the car itself - I just don't think they are very compatible)

Not everyone will subscribe to this view, of course! yes it is true, but i have seen the service booklet and the car has received a service every year, at porsche abu dhabi and porsche prague, and everything seems ok the car is also in impeccable condition. i've never seen a used car more than 5 years old in such good condition. Even the leather inside doesn't have the slightest stripe in the seats. the seller states that the car has never been damaged. I think it's still possible to do a VIN check to see if the car has, or has not, been in an accident, don't you think? or can such reports also be falsified? the car has the typical GTS front bumper, but I have verified that even in the 718 if one selects 'sport design package' one can have the 718 GTS front bumper put on the 718 and 718S

So, do you think that because the car costs less, but has 'unusual' colours, it will still be easily resaleable tomorrow at the price that a black 981 BASE black will have in the future? Or will the black black 981 BASE still and always have a bigger market despite having the same price? finally: what do you think of the other 2 cars I put above, the 981 BASE but blue/black and the manual 997 TARGA with 50.000miles? I appreciated a lot. some have asked why I care so much about the opinion of people on a forum, the reason is that the resale factor is important to me. so I took a few days to hear from various car dealers, who told me that the car with this type of colouring would have a smaller market, but still would. So I didn't find any dealers who told me: no, we would never buy it back at a reasonable price. A dealer isn't going to tell you we would never buy it back, are they? It would stop you buying it. Once you have it though, its too late. You are then at their mercy, its worth whatever they or anyone interested in buying it, are willing to pay.

Andre_Sant said: Ok, I understand your point, but I must also consider the fact that the prices is lowest than a 981S black black For this 981S yellow red with many GTS specs, the price is like a 981 base black black with chrono only.. Thanks a lot Personally speaking, the yellow/red combo would mean I couldn't ever think about buying the car. So to me, the 981 base model would always be worth more, because I could buy it and happily drive around in it. So from a personal perspective, the unusual colour combination would do more than just devalue the car. I just wouldn't ever consider buying it. I'd consider the black/black 981. 997 Targa? Yes, I'd also consider that one. Just my thoughts - and you did ask for opinions. It's just mine, so take no more seriously than any other. Liam

Thanks for the link, but it is 65.000 EURO VS 50.000 EURO.. a very big difference and In this case I really can't like the interior in the 65.000 EURO version (I prefer a lot the red leather.. it is a personal taste of course..) ___ I found also a black / black real 981 GTS for 66.500 EURO but I feel that the price is too high VS the 981S yellow / red at 50.000 EURO with GTS specs. I tried to ask them for 60.000 EURO (from 66.500 EURO).. they will think about it..

Makes me think of rhubarb and custard. Not a fan of the interior personally.

Colour is the most important spec choice and is not economic to change (whereas adding some cost options or changing wheels / exhaust is easier). Most buyers would consider a saleable colour (black/grey/silver/dark metallics/white) or yellow with black leather and sacrifice some missing cost options IMHO.

Andre_Sant said: finally: what do you think of the other 2 cars I put above, the 981 BASE but blue/black and the manual 997 TARGA with 50.000miles? Thanks a lot So if I have this correct: Yellow / red S - 50k + a serivce, 56k miles, 2014 carbon interior pack carbon illuminated door entry guards carbon bit on steering wheel black / black (not S) - 32k miles 2013 has all the importnat options - 20" wheels, sports exhaust and sport chrono same price honestly wouldn't really care about the carbon bits or heated steering wheel and memory seats black car all day long, especially given mileage personally I would go for a tasteful colour S with an OK spec (nice whels, chrono, etc) but no trinkets like carbon bits how much are they in your market?

POST 44Original post

Andre_Sant said: Thanks for the link, but it is 65.000 EURO VS 50.000 EURO.. a very big difference It is a newer car with less miles at retail price (not negotiated) from a dealer as opposed to a private sale that has already been negotiated, not in a marmite colour scheme. So yes there is a big difference as it stands - but not to your taste, so fair enough. There is no such thing as a cheap Porsche, if it is there is always a reason for it. Having read all you have written I think you are unlikely to find what you want for what you are willing to pay for it, but good luck with your search.

The answer is obvious. Buy both. Swop over the interiors - you'll have a yellow/black, and a black/red, both will look stunning. Keep the one you prefer/people tell you is more 'valuable', and sell the other for a massive profit - I'll take my usual 10%.

Of course, I will still carry out all the necessary checks to make sure that the parts are original (including the front bumper) and that the car has never had an accident (about this, I also intend to contact porsche abu dhabi and porsche prague) thanks a lot

Having read all you have written I think you are unlikely to find what you want for what you are willing to pay for it, but good luck with your search. Thanks for your answer yes it is true, but I like the light beige/cream leather colour much less than the red colour (yes of course, it is only my taste). Also if we consider that the black/black 981 GTS can be found for €66,500, I think the price of the silver 981 S is still overpriced, even if the seller drops the price a bit. In general, if I had found a black/black Porsche 981 S with good options, or a yellow/black 981S, for 58,000/59,000 euros, I would have bought it. Given that in italy they sell the 981 GTS at 66,500 euros, and at 49,000 euros you can find the basic black/black 981 well equipped, I think 58,000 euros is its correct value, but the problem is that you can't find any, because Porsche sold a very small number of 981S in Italy

I think 58,000 euros is its correct value, but the problem is that you can't find any, because Porsche sold a very small number of 981S in Italy There is a limited supply and they are not making any more, the correct value is whatever somebody else is willing to pay for it, that is what determines a price, not what you value it at.

If a 981 GTS costs EUR 66,500 with few miles, a 981 S cannot cost basically the same (even if there are only a few), as it is an inferior model to a pure 981 GTS.
