Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

The series letter (A, B, C, etc.) is used by Porsche to indicate the revision for production cars.
Leading evidence: 'Use by porsche' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace annually' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Although Porsche internally changes the headings for its models, all 911 models were and are currently sold as a "911".

They are used within the parts program to identify the models, but also your VIN contains this same model number, and so you could say it's in the public domain as well.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hello everyone. I think I need to vent here about the way
Porsche
identifies their generational changes in each of their car models. Let's start up top: the
911
. The first one was a
911
of course. All good. Then the 930, then jumped to the 964, then the 993. Then they realized they were running out of runway so they went to the 996, then the 997. Then some genius German decided to step back to the 991. If they take the safe route and go to the
992
next
, they've now painted themselves into a corner. What's after that? Why did they ever decide to name the
911
another 9XX moniker in the first place?
And don't get me started on the
Boxster
and
Cayman
...
Yea I dont get it eaither. Also, I think the 912 was before the
911
. No sense. And now I can't keep the latest model for the
Cayman
,
Boxster
, and "
911
" numbers straight at all. Yea, I may be getting old. But some logic would be nice. Im glad Im not the only one.
No big deal really, as it's only the enthusiasts that use the platform models, where as most others call it a 2004
911
or 1999
Boxster
etc.
Still I'm not sure what their logic is with it all and why it can't be just sequential.
Worse still is the
Cayenne
which went 9PA, 9PA1 and then 92A.
Interpol, actually the model designations are not just internal i.e. for project management and production. They are used within the parts program to identify the models, but also your VIN contains this same model number, and so you could say it's in the public domain as well.
Add to that if you consider that the 356,
911
, 912, 914, 944, 924, 928, 959 were all sold by their three digit codes then I guess
Porsche
's changes make even less sense.
The 912 was released after 911 and is the same car but to try and increase sales they dropped in a 4-cylinder version making it a cheaper car to buy.
Got a friend who has one, along with his 964 RS and 993 RS
I found this screamingly funny. Spilled my coffee. I'm not making fun, just the image of meetings around a big conference table to decide the
next
number made me laugh out loud.
I know I could never keep them straight so I refuse to participate in those "naming conventions". For me it's model name and year, just like almost every other car on the road. Well except maybe for Ferrari which I also can't get my mind around.

911 nomenclature[
edit
]
Although Porsche internally changes the headings for its models, all 911 models were and are currently sold as a "911". The headings below use Porsche's internal classifications:
Porsche 911
(1963–1989)
Porsche 930
a
turbo
version of the original 911
Porsche 964
(1989–1994)
Porsche 993
(1993–1998)
Porsche 996
(1999–2005) all-new body and water-cooled engines
Porsche 997
(2005–2012)
Porsche 991
(2012–Present)
The series letter (A, B, C, etc.) is used by Porsche to indicate the revision for production cars. It often changes annually to reflect changes for the new
model year
. The first 911 models are the "A series", the first 993 cars are the "R series".
Not all of the Porsche 911 models ever produced are mentioned here. The listed models are notable for their role in the advancements in technology and their influence on other vehicles from Porsche.
Looks like they went up and up, didnt want to peek out with a 999 and are now on the way back down again.
Actually to make matters confused further, the first "
911
" was a 901, but since Peugeot owned the rights to 3 number model names with a 0 in the middle (e.g., 504 and etc.)
Porsche
decided to go with
911
(which has since become very iconic). The
next
one was not 930, but it was called the "G Series".
I actually like the fact that they jump around their code names, as it separates the wheat from the chaff if you know what I mean
I am relieved not to be the only one confused by
Porsche
's "system", which is rivalled by
John Deere
's. They will repeat numbers, often decades apart- I have a 7520 circa 2006, but there are 7520's still in use that were built in the 70's, albeit a completely different beast. Does anyone know of a poster that would show profiles, dates, model numbers etc of all the models
Porsche
has produced? Would be a handy reference for those of us not lifelong afficionados.
