They do this by filling the internals of the tubes with inert gas to eliminate weld burn-through to the interior.

While we’re working on the street videos for the Exhaust (ok, let’s be honest, this one’s fun to test drive), here’s a glimpse into what’s next – Headers.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

At AWE Tuning, we work with amazing cars on a daily basis. The Porsche GT2 RS is one that stands out of the crowd. Join us on our quest to make fast, faster.
We will be updating this thread to show the progress of our build. Check back frequently, for updates and to see GT2 RS performance unlocked.
How it all began.
How do you make the perfect car better? Well, I guess perfect is relative. The customer was looking for a more expressive exhaust note, and some incremental power to boot.
First, we needed a baseline power and torque figure.
Once we had our baseline figure, we began disassembling the stock exhaust.
The stock exhaust weighs in at 29lbs, which is fairly light. However, while making 90 more hp, the GT2 RS uses essentially the same exhaust system found on the “lesser” 2008-10 997 GT2. The part numbers for the catalysts and muffler are identical between the two cars.
The stock system may be pretty light, but its main drawback is the use of 625 cell per inch catalysts. That, and the slightly small 64mm / 2.50” OD tubing.
The AWE Tuning design will incorporate the latest generation German HJS 200 cell catalysts along with much larger 76mm / 3.00” OD tubing.
Over the coming weeks we’ll take you behind the scenes of how both exhaust and software work is done for one of the most sought after rides on the planet.
We began building the exhaust for the GT2 RS by taking cues from the AWE Tuning 997.2TT Exhaust System. Amongst other highlights, a cross flow balance section connecting the cylinder banks to sweeten the exhaust note as the revs climb, full T304 stainless steel construction, V-banded bullet mufflers with composite acoustical packing, and massive slash cut RSR style laser etched tips. German made 200 cell HJS HD metal core catalysts are part of how we guarantee no check engine light.
All of AWE Tuning’s Porsche exhaust systems are made completely in house.
Tone? Sure. None better.
Naked rear? Well, we’re partial, but this is one of our favorite views.
Stay tuned for dyno testing!
RSR Style slash-cut tips within the carbon fiber lined cut-outs.
Remember, all else but the exhaust is stock on the car at this point. The AWE Tuning exhaust has unlocked 58 ftlbs of torque to the wheels, equaling ~61ftlbs torque gained at the crank.
Sound wise, it’s revealing a brute tone – with perfect in-cabin sound to boot.
Stay tuned for video and sound clips…
While we’re working on the street videos for the Exhaust (ok, let’s be honest, this one’s fun to test drive), here’s a glimpse into what’s next – Headers. The AWE Tuning fabrication team uses purge TIG welding when building the headers to ensure smooth, strong welds. They do this by filling the internals of the tubes with inert gas to eliminate weld burn-through to the interior. The purge welds are further hand finished for extraordinarily optimized exhaust gas flow. Take a look:
The head flanges are flycut in our CNC vertical mill to ensure a 100% flat contact surface. This eliminates the possibility of any exhaust gas leaking from this critical point. Any leaks would slow turbo spool equaling power loss.
The headers get extremely hot on the street (but you knew that), let alone on the track. That is why we use 321 grade stainless steel tubing, rather than the more common 304 grade stainless. Being more thermally stable, 321 grade stainless steel prevents deformation or cracking over time. The tube paths were kept equal in flow in our design, pre-modeled in our CFD (Computation Fluid Dynamics) software.
Stay tuned for power information on the headers, and more on the exhaust…
Many of you may be familiar with what the “underbelly of a beast” looks like in action. That said, who doesn’t want to see a GT2 RS heating up in action?
The header R&D is wrapping up nicely.
To come: Dyno sheets with the headers… stay tuned!
I see you guys use Solidworks for your header design, nice. I didn't realize the headers could get that hot that quick. Obviously its relative to the motor output, but even so. Cool video, thanks for sharing!
The AWE Tuning GT2 RS build has been coming together nicely. The final stage of the build includes G.I.A.C. GT2 RS Software.
Here are the results with the AWE Tuning Exhaust and G.I.A.C. Software on pump gas (93) versus AWE Tuning Exhaust with stock software:
Results to the tune of 8hp/39ft-lb torque gain to the wheels on 93 octane.
Stay tuned, we’re pulling together the results of the software + AWE Tuning headers and wait ‘till you see what happens with race fuel.
As mentioned earlier, the inclusion of G.I.A.C. Software resulted in an 8hp/39ft-lb torque gain to the wheels on 93 octane, when coupled with the AWE Tuning Exhaust.
Then came the addition of AWE Tuning Headers, which proved to double the HP output of the AWE Tuning Exhaust + G.I.A.C. Software.
The AWE Tuning Headers resulted in a 16hp/3ft-lb of torque gain to the wheels on 93 octane. The GT2 RS is obviously one of the finest examples of factory performance out there, so while we’re happy with where we’ve gone so far (and trust us, this driving experience is one to remember), we’re not done yet.
Stay tuned for race fuel results, and some video documentation of it all…
You’ve seen the results with Exhaust, Headers, and G.I.A.C. Software on 93 octane. Gains were made over the power band. What happened next had us grinning.
Here are the gains on race fuel:
A 22hp/45ft-lb of torque gain to the wheels on 100 octane.
Just to put these numbers into perspective, let’s look at these figures compared to stock:
As any Porsche fan would be, we appreciated the stock figures that the GT2 RS put down on our in-house Mustang dyno. Adding the AWE Tuning Exhaust, Headers, and G.I.A.C. Software, and 100 octane fuel, the GT2 RS put down an impressive 47hp/145ft-lb torque gain over stock.
Stay tuned for video of this monster on the street.
Thanks for following the GT2 RS build thread so far!
You followed along as we fabricated an Exhaust and Headers, and recently added G.I.A.C. Software. You saw how much performance we unlocked from a vehicle that really doesn’t leave much on the table even in stock form. Now it’s time to hear the AWE Tuning GT2 RS’s war cry and watch the massive 325/30/19 Michelin Pilot Sport Cups struggle for traction.
Enjoy!

After a few track days with the GT2 RS, it was apparent that with the additional grip provided by Hoosier R6s better seats and belts were needed, and due to the additional speed from the combination of the minds and expertise at AWE Tuning and G.I.A.C., a bolt-in Roll Bar wasn’t a bad idea either.
Porsche’s Sport seats work well on the street, but lack of needed lateral support and lack of harness compatibility meant that they needed to go. So in came the car, and out came the seats.
With the seats out, it was time to install the Roll Bar. With the first pieces of the Roll Bar mounted inside the car, this GT2 RS started to look more like a 24x7 performer.
Once the Roll Bar install was finished, it was time to address the belts and the seats. For the GT2 RS we went with Recaro Profili XL, and mated them to Schroth 6 Profi Harnesses. We selected this pair because both the seats and the belts are HANS compatible, which was very important. Simply stated, HANS devices same lives and are an extremely important safety measure for anyone on track, even more so for someone who has this much power on tap. As with all Recaro seats, the fit, finish and construction was all top-notch, and definitely look at home in the GT2 RS.
Once the interior was finished up, on went the new set of Hoosier R6s, and the GT2 RS was delivered to New Jersey Motorsports Park, where it was front and center for a PCA Sponsored Track Day and AWE Tuning’s Volkstreffen.
Here she is.
