I can’t wait for Saturday morning! I’m taking my 987 for an Audio upgrade which is going to add good value to the car. I’m putting in a
Pioneer

/
Android auto
system. I am using the original
Bose speakers
though. This will modernise a great machine with the latest technology. Out with the old Din 2 and in with the touchscreen. This work is going to take 2 hours to complete and cost me £1.1k to bring this Gen.1 up to date. For me, it’s a no brainer decision, but it would be interesting to know if others have or will be doing the same. Let me know. I will also add pictures of the before and after 💪🏻
Post the results/impressions after!
As you are keeping the
bose speakers
- what is the plan for the
Bose amp
? From what I can gather there are two options - keep the
bose amp
and use a MOST (fiber optic) converter for your non fiber head unit OR ditch the
bose amp
and I'm assuming have a separate amp (unless you can use the factory wiring to put line level out to the factory speakers?)
Essentially, I've been digging through old threads/posts on the options if one wants to keep most/all of the factory wiring but replace the head unit but not having the use the fiber converter.
I’m keeping the optic wiring including the
Bose Amp
. The additional material I need to make these changes is going to cost about £480 hence why the job overall is going to cost £1.1k inc of labour. I’ll post pictures for sure 👍🏻
Make sure the workmanship is top notch and don't throw away anything! The one thing that bugs me about my 987 is the last owner put in a headunit with bluetooth/phone mic and god know what else. My rear speakers either don't work or aren't there, the 6-disc changer in the frunk is missing the insert that holds the discs, and whoever did the mic install scratched up the A-pillars. I want to return my car to stock "ish" form but with the missing/unknown components its just not worth it, which saddens me. You are the cars current caretaker but if you sell one day the
next
guy would appreciate it if you left notes on what you did and included the stock parts.
I’m keeping everything and if I sell her one day they will be fully ITK about the audio changes I make. I will most probably give them the option to keep it with the upgrade or put the system back to its original state. I’m a good owner👌🏻
Here’s the audio system upgrade 🔥🔥
Look great! How is the sound? What is the make of the double din surround - the color match in the photos seems pretty good.
It’s a

system. The faceplate and materials are from Germany hence the perfect fit and colour match👌🏻
Did you had to buy the faceplate separately? If yes where?
Thanks
I did have to pay for the faceplate including materials separately, but the fella at the Audio shop got them for me from Germany. Unfortunately, I don’t know the supplier.
Cruchfield in the U.S. sells faceplates and custom wiring harnesses for these units as well. The materials I received when I purchased the DMH-W4660NEX were all top notch. I did order the
black faceplate
, because I don't love the champagne factory accent color, but now I think I've made a mistake and may order another one in the factory color.
