Morning all,
I am interested to know your thoughts on when you think the auto transmission on the 987 Cayman S should gear up.
I assume gear 1 to 2 should be between 5 & 10 mph. 2 to 3 should be between 10 to 25 and 3-4 should be from 25 to 40. When should gear 5 kick in when you put your foot down? I noticed my 987 was still in gear 4 at 70mph. When I stop accelerating hard it gears up to 5. Is this odd?This hard acceleration was from a stop position.
let me know your thoughts.
My thoughts are two-fold:
1 - We don't know what "auto transmission" you have. Is it a Tiptronic or a PDK (Tiptronic 2008 and older, PDK 2009 and newer) - they do behave differently.
2 - You're overthinking this. The transmission control unit responds to your driving behavior. If it sees you really slam the accelerator pedal to the floor it assumes you want to accelerate as quickly as possible, so it will hold gears longer to keep the engine in the middle of the torque curve (torque provides the acceleration, HP just provides the power at some RPM). If it sees you gently nudging the accelerator pedal, it assumes you're either a grandmother on the way to church or stuck in slow traffic. In that case, it opts not to stress the engine and will shift up to a higher gear at a lower RPM. If as you describe you were accelerating hard and then reached your desired speed and backed off the fun pedal, it assumes you want to continue at that speed so it shifts up to the next gear (if appropriate) so as to take the strain off the engine by using lower revolutions per minute.
Those are my thoughts on this subject.
BTW - if you check your user settings you can add a "Sig" to all your messages, current and past - that tells people what car you have, perhaps where you're located, etc. There is one right below this you can use as an example:
Thanks for your thoughts on this. I was concerned that my gearbox wasn’t behaving correctly. I have a tiptronic system on a 2008 Porsche Cayman S
You probably also have a bit of hesitation around 2800 rpm in second gear, the revs may seem to drop 150 rpm or so? That’s a fairly common quirk of the Tiptronic, as well.
I can’t say I’ve noticed that tbh. From Gear 1 to 4 she kicks down and changes quick, but as stated earlier in this thread apparently it’ll hold onto gears as long as possible. I just thought the change up from gear 4 to 5 was too long, but apparently it’s normal based on how you drive. I will look out for some hesitation now that you’ve mentioned it.
It will be most noticeable when you shift manually
One thing I have noticed more since starting this post is the fact that I drive around in my local area mostly in gear 4 because of the speed limits. Gear 5 won’t come in unless I go over 35mph.
Likewise. Fifth is geared awfully tall
