used an airbrush and the results are great but the color is just a shade off.

I will check into all of them to find the best solution for refinishing the trim.

Problem was that they didn't carry the same base anymore (the pic was from 2020) and they had to use their spectrophotometer to match another panel I thankfully brought in.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

On June 23rd it was the 57,747 mile, 15th year anniversary of the day I picked up my 2007 Caman S at Brumos
Porsche
.
It was my first new, and so far, only new
Porsche
I have ever purchased.
I ordered the
Cayman
with all the options I wanted and was exactly as I wanted it.
In the past 15 years, I have enjoyed thoroughly. Short trips, long trip, drive it to work a few days a week, and autocrossed it.
There were two issues that were taken care under warrantee. A seat adjuster button broke, and a door handle with a broken spring.
I still enjoy it very much and am satisfied with the way the car has performed. But… I have had some disappointments with some of the quality issues.
These were quality issues that I did not expect to have with a
Porsche
, and frankly expected
Porsche
to take care of it.
Sagging head liner. Ok on an old Chrysler Lebaron, but very unacceptable in a
Porsche
. I had the headliner replaced so it’s ok now.
Pixelating LCD speedo display. I bought a repair kit and am trying to build up enough courage to dive into the repair.
Radio that will not stay on the station you chose. This was taken care under an extended warrantee. Not by
Porsche
.
The all-leather terracotta interior. The leather is doing fine, but the plastic interior parts that are painted in the same color as the leather are not. The paint is peeling off and
Porsche
does not offer touch up paint for it. It bothers me a lot, but I try not to see it and I’m living with it. I suggested to Dr. Color chip that they should make interior color touch up paint. Maybe someday.
Conclusion; I still love the car. I continue to enjoy it and would buy it again. The issues mentioned above are not enough to change my mind about the
Cayman S
.
Congrats on 15 years! As the former owner of a
987.1
, and the current owner of Both a
987.2
and a
981
, the 987 series unfortunately has had a lot of interior wear issues that you speak of. I mean, a LOT.
Thankfully, I feel that
Porsche
generally got things right in the
981
going forward, but otherwise - the 987 platform really was (and is) superb as one of the last of the incredibly connected, smaller-car, and "analog" Porsches (especially the hydraulic steering).
Per the interior paint, do a few searches. You may be able to do a $6 touch-up paint solution per
Home Depot
; mine looks pretty good after doing that.
If you want to make your interior look much better I would recommend looking up a paint called Magic Mender. They make
Porsche
specific interior paint. The cheap bullsh*t soft touch paint they use is horseshi*t. I had some scratches on my trim pieces and it matched pretty well as far as I’m concerned. Prep work wasn’t horribly bad and it can be applied with a sponge brush or a cheap Harbour Freight air brush. I went with the airbrush option and applied several thin coats. I did it about 7 months ago and I’m still happy with the results.

Home Depot
can match it and it lasts and looks pretty decent… that rubber latex like coating is garbage forsure. The headliner, pretty normal… all your semi issues are common… I’d say be happy it’s not bore scoring or a low compression motor… it would make your trip to
Home Depot
feel like a walk in the park
Hi guys, thanks for the suggestions. A few years ago I asked an auto paint store if they could match the interior trim color. They could but didn't think that their paint would stick to the plastic trim. So I did not buy the paint.
I just took a look at the Magic Mender paint site recommended by ChrisS819. They have two different shades of Terracotta paint, but they do not recommend it for hard plastic.
Chris, the touch up paint you used from Magic Mender, was it on the hard trim or on a soft seat?
Porsche08, I know what you mean. I am very happy with my
Cayman
and am very conscious of the fact that the issues I have are in fact easy to resolve and/or live with.
I’m only saying that the items that made you write this thread, the issues could be way worse off… I meant nothing about your car in particular… just a general statement
So, pull off a trim piece and take to Home Depot and they can match it… the paint actually is pretty durable… it’s a cheap matchable fix…

I used them to repaint (after stripping) all the hard plastic Sand Beige interior pieces in my 06 CS. Hardest part is stripping the old softouch - color match is very good and the rattle can(s) make it easy.

Guys, thanks again for all the suggestions. I will check into all of them to find the best solution for refinishing the trim.
ochristofferson, your refinished trim looks very good. Did the paint you used to refinish your plastic trim pieces have the same tactile surface as the original finish?
I have the same issues with my 06CS and have used the
Home Depot
touch-up method. It's certainly not perfect, but it's very cheap and easy and looks decent unless you get very close. Just go to
Home Depot
and give them this info and tell them you just need a sample size. Also, here's a before and after so you can see the effect.
Hi Chris, thank you for finding and posting the video. I am at work now so I can't watch it at this moment. But I will as soon as I get home.
Thanks again.
Bill.
Hey guys… Do any of you have an EXACT match Sand Beige color code, especially for
Home Depot
? I’ve made three trips to HD and it’s close but not quite there. used an airbrush and the results are great but the color is just a shade off.
Hey
@schwinn
- Hope to eventually meet up in person one of these days!
I just brought a color table from a Sherwin-Williams pic (from a 987 Facebook group) to a SW store within walking distance. Problem was that they didn't carry the same base anymore (the pic was from 2020) and they had to use their spectrophotometer to match another panel I thankfully brought in. I had them make up a sample size (~$9 for a quart) and the color was closer than any of the Home Depot ones. The only other issue is that all the sample sizes from SW are satin (matte is only available in a gallon) and OEM is really a matte/eggshell. Going to give this a try and see how it looks; half tempted to shoot it with a matte clear coat out of a rattle can afterwards and see how the final product comes out.
Good to know. I was always told that they could still match with old data, and update it in the process... that's why I figured it should be fine. I was really asking to see/hear if that match was not as good as it seems in the pictures - you mentioned you tried a few matches and they didn't pan out, so I wasn't sure if this was one as well.
Anyway, you're on top of it... and good info to know that they can't match older ones. If you get a match, let us know!
Will do,
@schwinn
- I think the issue with many places is that paint departments (SW, HD) can numerically match things if they have the same exact base available. I'm likely going to see how today's $10 gamble works out. Again, I think the color match may be spot on aside from the shine, which is great. I'm super-picky about colors/texture given that creative is my wheelhouse per my show and artwork... but the satin may be close enough and the shine may dull naturally over time. Curious about airbrush blending per touch-up on some pieces versus painting entire pieces (ashtray, etc.).
But before any of that, this morning I'm on standby to drive to NH to a freight terminal, to pick up what apparently is the VERY LAST brand new 987 removable hard top available in the entire world...made of reinforced unobtanium
and is arriving in a wooden crate. I feel wicked fancy having bought something that arrives in a wooden crate... LOL! Wish me luck.
