Hey there! I bought an
2006 Cayman S
987.1
with about 80k miles. I had to replace the AOS because I was getting significant oil consumption and a big puff of smoke on every startup, so I checked the breather from the AOS into the intake and that thing was SOAKED with oil. Got the new AOS and breather in, I’m now rarely getting a smoke cloud on crank, but I am getting a stream of oil smoke from both tailpipes on idle until the car warms up, then it seems to go away once it’s warm. It’s pretty significant, especially if I just let it idle. If I drive off it seems like it’s gone once the car starts getting to temp, maybe 5-10 minutes or so of driving. When I cleaned out the intake from the oil sheen of the previous AOS, I got a STRONG fuel smell when I opened up the intake plenum/runners. The car hadn’t been run for a while when I did that, but when it had ran it had been stopped/started without getting to temp.
I recently checked the intake breather again and despite the breather and AOS being brand new there’s definitely fresh oil in the breather again, at the AOS end. Is that just a normal thing?
With regard to the oil smoke at idle, is there any opinion you all might have? From what I’ve read on the various forums,
next
to check would be the valve seals/guides or injectors. I also plan on taking the spark plugs out, checking those for oil/soot, and scope the cylinders while I’m there. Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
check the plugs for sure, Id start there and the scope. How old are coils? Could be incomplete combustion when cold. At 80K would doubt seals/guides or even injectors unless she was run hard and not cared for ( oil changes ect)
Cross your fingers regarding a stream of oil from your tail pipes until the engine warms up. This is one signs of Bore Scoring. Please review Jake Raby discussions on flatsixinnovations.com. He has a series of 6 video's for your viewing. Once you have reviewed these, you can ask yourself if your car exhibits any of the described symptoms. If you do not have ticking noise on idle, you maybe able to avoid a rebuild. Rather, please look at the startup instructions closely. Just let the engine rpm reduce as the engine heats up after startup. Then slowly drive away. Do not let it sit in your drive and warm up. Do not floor it for at least 10 minutes of drive. Water temp of 176 does not mean that your oil is up to operating temps. The oil spray on the cylinder walls and plastic piston skirt covering need that oil film working well. . You are trying to prevent that plastic coating from being eroded, exposing the aluminum skirt making direct contact with the cylinder matrix bore. Once that erosion starts, there is no going back as a rebuild is the only option or a new engine. Another idea is the AOS allowing oil to reach the combustion chamber from the oil sump. A simple way of checking the aos is to remove the oil cap with the engine going. If notthing happens, then your AOS is shot and you may have oil all over inside of the hoses from the heads to the AOS and from the AOS to the plenum. That would be an easy fix if that, is the problem. Usually a bad AOS triggers a cloud of blue smoke, but if that has been going on for some time, you might see oil droplets as well. Let us know more symptoms after reviewing the videos.
