mine is a DD to work, but I ensure I use the other car in the house for a shopping trolley.

Suggestion
True - the GT3 pipes were black, so easier to keep clean just by washing, but the finish does get damaged/tarnished if you don't stay top of it.

This is my 3rd Porsche with PSE and it is by far the worst for sooting, so much so, that at 7k miles and during winter, with all the salty crud about, I have to use a Dremel to polish the stuff off

I'm sorry, you can argue that you like it (and since it's purely subjective I can't disagree) The fact that it uses fuel to create that effect it is undoubtedly inefficient is also beyond doubt.

PSE or Aftermarket rule - or go drive a passat and enjoy the lifeless experience that comes with it, I will stick to farting, worked for me in school, works for me now
Anyone here who has a BGTS notice that the PSE gets MUCH louder from about 1,900 miles onwards?
I had not driven the car for a week due to a business trip but when I took it for a run it was very clear to me the PSE was very much louder in 'Sport' mode (which is always on when I drive).
Not complaining, I am a very happy camper indeed
I noticed the same on my CGTS around ~1.5k though. Agree regarding the warmer weather / temps, once the motor has been at full tilt after warming up its sound is magnificent. I have pdk and the manual downshifting in sports plus is truly epic, constantly turning heads at the lights.
I've noticed when the engine is warmed up and after a short break, so let's say trip of 50 miles, then break then back on the road, the exhaust crackles heavily! Really loud! (CGTS with PDK here with 600 miles).
The thing that drives me insane is the "shotgun" sound inside the cabin during gearchanges at 5000rpm

Hindhead Tunnel for mine
Love making a ruckus underneath motorway interchanges too.
Get my Boxster GTS on Friday - can't wait!!!!!!!!!!.... Southwick tunnel on the A27 between Shoreham and Brighton should also be a good echo chamber - and unlike the Hindhead tunnel there is no SPECS speed checks in it either!!

I too don't quite understand why a combustion malfunction (burning of fuel in the manifold/exhaust), which modern engines don't normally exhibit these days, should be artificially created and become a desirable feature.

A throwback to the 1960'e era of "proper" sports cars I guess.... make the most of it, with ever tightening emission regulations soon all cars will be turbocharged and wonderful sounding exhausts such as the Boxster / Cayman GTS will be but a distant memory on new cars.

Not at all. My Boxster is turbo charged and makes a great noise.
Quote from the "911 and Porsche World" magazine article.
"Predictably, the first thing you notice with this car is the noise. Quite simply, it makes one of the very best noises I’ve heard from the tail pipes of a Porsche. At one point during the shoot, David drove his car backwards and forward for the photographer so he could capture a panning shot. Having an idle moment I set off in search of some mobile phone signal and climbed up onto a hill overlooking the road where we were working. I must have been about 100 metres away by this point, but the sound of this Boxster was loud and rich in tone: if you’d been facing the other way you’d have guessed that some exotic old Porsche race car was flying past behind you. It’s a deep sound, far more so than you’d normally associate with a Boxster, and when the car is being worked hard there’s the slight chirrup of the excess boost between gears. Thankfully, you’re not assaulted by this sound all of the time you drive the car, as on light throttle openings it dies away, but even from the moment you fire up the engine you’re aware of its potency from inside the cabin. The Cayman Turbo sounded fabulous too, but as ever, a convertible allows you to hear so much more of the noise".

I think we may have a difference of opinion of what constitutes "proper" - most sports cars of that era were by modern standards utter rubbish - I've driven a lot of them,, and wouldn't give tuppence for the vast majority.

I was talking in context with the sound rather than the driving

I've never heard the sound of a Boxster or Cayman turbo, but very few production turbocharged cars make a nice sound. Too muffled by the turbocharger and charge coolers.

The driving experience isn't what's being talked about, but the noise. In the past sports and racing cars popped and banged because of their tuning. Even though they don't have to do that any more, it's engineered in because that noise is associated with sportiness. It's marketing and personally I love it.

We'll just have to differ - as my wife will tell you, I haven't got a nostalgic bone in my body. I just associate the noise with poor engineering (difficult to avoid then with carburettors and high overlap cams
but unnecessary now). I try to avoid farting in public too.
Before you know it Porsche will be piping the noise of a six cylinder engine through their sound system when they go to turbo 4s - it's a slippery slope.....

Little point in you buying a Boxster or Cayman GTS then - you wouldn't appreciate it as it would be far too uncouth for you. As for me I think it's one of the finest sounding modern cars out there. Sports cars aren't supposed to sound like muffled vacuum cleaners.

Nonsense, I like the sound of the car - just don't like pops and bangs on the overrun which come with the sports exhaust- yes it is far too uncouth for my taste, if you like. So I haven't got one on my S, and personally wouldn't spec one. But each to his own.
The exhaust note wasn't, in any case, a significant factor in MY purchase. For me a nice (cultured) exhaust is very pleasant to have, and is a part of the sophisticated feel of the car - but I'm far more into the handling and ride than exhaust note. Let me put it another way I'd trade a less pleasant exhaust note for more steering feel any day - if that trade was to be had.

you get the pops and bangs in the turbo 4 A45
Ok so you would not buy a GT3 I guess.
I think we are talking about different cars/sounds for different people.

Maybe we should change this thread into where is the best tunnel?
Munt La Schera (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Munt_la_Schera_Tunnel), hands down for me
.
Only one car wide, sound bounces around like you would not believe. I think Top Gear used that once too? Was following a 997GT3 last summer, and a number of other great sounding cars, all queued up to file in one by one, and then making the most of the tunnel. I have never heard anything like it, and never grinned so much in my life, my face ached... a lot.
Can't wait to get back to that particular tunnel again this summer in the CGTS.

Same here, seems like it's improving, and Sport+ sounds better again (sharp lift off in first gear is insane
, hard not to drive in that mode 100%
- but even less TC and no 7th gear means I tend to stick with Sport most of the time, got a nice surprise when I put it in Sport+ after a while of not using it, the differences sounded more pronounced than they did before.
Shame they couldn't make it sound like that in all driving modes as one still has the PSE button to quieten it all down, but I guess some of it is as a result of the other things the driving mode is doing.
Unfortunately I don't appreciate a lot of difference between sport and s+ in a sporty but not too much ride, i.e. not in a track.
Throttle is almost identical, steering identical (should it change, it is epas), exhaust a little bit more crackling, but really I was expecting more and more differences.
Yes S+ is definitely louder, but I can drive in S without noticing it.

Yes and no. I haven't driven a GT3 of any variety (my son has driven loads) but from what I have read and what he says... I wouldn't want one on the road - too track focused, or on the track - not focused enough. In any case on the track I'd much prefer to drive a car that I wasn't in fear of doing expensive gravel rash or wiping off the splitter.
Re exhaust noise - Aston V12, and for looks Aston too, but since they aren't my top priorities I'll probably never have one.
A downside to the popping/farting/banging is the amount of soot that appears on the tailpipes. This is my 3rd Porsche with PSE and it is by far the worst for sooting, so much so, that at 7k miles and during winter, with all the salty crud about, I have to use a Dremel to polish the stuff off

Buggering about with the engine/exhaust, in effect, to make it malfunction doesn't seem like a good idea to me, and it's hardly surprising if it has undesirable side effects.

That's why I have black exhaust pipes where you can't see any buildup.

I think we are getting the idea that you don't like the GTS exhaust characteristics - but I think you need to accept that you are in a minority.

True - the GT3 pipes were black, so easier to keep clean just by washing, but the finish does get damaged/tarnished if you don't stay top of it. That may well not be an issue to some, mind?

You're probably right about being in a minority. But it's not GTS as such its PSE. It is, in engineering terms, an abortion, and I don't like abortionate engineering to produce an effect which is a malfunction.
My old Caterham 7 HPC (2.0l VX) on Carbs sounded pretty good. Lots of popping on downshifts and the occasional foot long flame (no kidding)!
The Hatfield Tunnel is pretty good as it's easy to do in both directions as it has exits with roundabouts after the tunnel exit in each direction.

You say it's "an abortion" but it's what the majority - including me - like. So it's not an abortion at all, it's an engineered in characteristic that the market clearly wants. And I speak as an engineer, albeit not an automotive one.

Porsche spend millions on making their engines as efficient as possible, extracting as many miles and horses out of each drop of petrol. They even have stop-start in traffic and a coast function on PDK.
Then people say I'd like it to pop bang and fart like engines did in the (good?) old days. SO they say OK we'll pour neat petrol into the exhaust manifold where it will ignite and make some fruity noises - and let efficiency go hang. If that's not bizarre and abortionate, I don't know what is.
Frankly, although I'm against synthesised noises in cars, it would be far more preferable to create the effect via the sound system if that's what people really want.

If Porsche were to ever synthesised noises in GTS or GT cars I would never buy one, I cant think of anything worse. Its like buying a Cayman 2.7, you only do that because you can't afford a 3.4 or GTS varient, otherwise why are you buying a porsche? There are better looking cars (in some peoples eyes), more pratical ones, ride better, more MPG etc...Porsches are sports cars and as such should sound like one, plus go like one. I would never drive a porsche and worry about the MPG. You only have to look at how BMW have completely ruinned the M3, by not only confusing people with an M4 badge but pumping exhaust notes into the cabin, its lame. May as well play the playstation vs. go for a drive on the sunday. I do worry about future of non 911's going to pot 4 turbos and all this synthesised nonsense appearing in Caymans and boxsters.

100% with you. A sports car has to sound like a sports car. No immediate worries about 911 going flat four though as Porsche have said categorically that "a 911 has six cylinders". What it will sound like as a turbo six remains to be seen, certainly current turbo / turbo S sound is not very inspiring compared with the lower powered NA cars. The latest BMW M3 / M4 turbo six sound awful, just a boring and totally uninspiring drone. Kills any appeal the car has for me, even if it is economical and green (for its power).

Agreed - just not necessarily a 1950s one. You can apply the same argument to looks - if that's your bag you could buy a Morgan. But you would doubtless argue that would be silly - times move on, cars improve, the design problems of the past have been resolved.....

You may have miss read - 'I do worry about future of non 911's'. I'm sure they will protect the 911's. One of the boys in my work has a brand new m4. My GTS owns him hard in terms of noise and tbh we had a blast up a b road from the lights and was behind me after 12 seconds, which I found intresting and unexpected (I do have PDK mind)

Agree some what. My Gen 1 3.4 Cayman had a lovely note, I would go as far as to say I enjoyed it more as a daily drive also, given that the steering feel was better etc... but at the same time its a different beast to the GTS, the GTS feels current and very fast and accomplished at that, more 'planted' when on it....and when you push on, the car is breathtaking in comparison to a Gen1. So imo I think the GTS suites the PSE. If it’s not to taste you disengage the PSE and you have a very normal note.
However the child in me just loves recalling my modified days of my miss guided youth, in saxos a like before I had real job.

I stand corrected!! The problem with the M3 / M4 - apart from the sound - is the weight, despite the major on paper power advantage the car is far too heavy. I may be wide of the mark here as I don't have the figures to hand but I believe the BMW is around 200kg heavier than the Porsche.

You're wrong. No extra fuel burnt in normal mode. 190g/km with pdk.
Go trolling elsewhere please.
Well count me in as loving the "abortion" that produces the pops, farts and bangs!
The noise that the GTS made was the number one (read: singularly most important) thing that made me buy it over about four other cars in contention at the £70k mark.
Seems to me that those flakey Porsche engineers creating all those pops, farts and bangs helped another person like me become a first-time customer.
And perhaps conspiracists think that EVO magazine must have been paid by Porsche to call the GTS the "worlds best exhaust sound".
As someone else said, if you don't like it then there is a magic button to disable PSE and make the car sound like a Golf GTI if that's your cup of tea
And the "purists" lamenting the wail of a flat six should buy a low-spec 2.7 without PSE and just thrash the bejesus out of it. Certainly before they only sell flat-fours. Get in quick!

I wasn't talking about Normal mode. Read what I wrote. And then, preferably, apologise. No point in having PSE unless you use fart mode.

Is it any wonder contributors to this thread are losing patience with you. The OP started this thread enthusing about the sounds the PSE makes and you come along making derisory comments purely because YOU don't happen to like the sound. Just because you don't happen to approve doesn't make it "badly engineered", wrong, inefficient or any of the other derisory comments you have made such as calling the PSE on "fart mode".

Yes but you are completely missing the point. It is the pops bangs and farts that we (ie everyone but you) are talking about in Sport mode. Porsche don't quote a separate figure for sport mode. The point I am making is that Porsche go to great lengths to get economy (in normal mode)- and then people press the sport button and throw some of it away.
Now by all means disagree with me - but please keep it civil like everyone else has.

I'm sorry, you can argue that you like it (and since it's purely subjective I can't disagree) The fact that it uses fuel to create that effect it is undoubtedly inefficient is also beyond doubt. Whether you think it is a sensible expenditure on petrol is also a completely subjective judgement.
The fact that I do or do not like the sound has little to do with the case I am putting forward.
I'm afraid I'll have to stick with "badly engineered". Burning petrol in the exhaust to produce a historic noise is not good engineering! Which is what really gets my goat.
If you like it and it gives you pleasure, fine! Just don't argue it's logical, Captain. (May the farts be with you)

Cmon bcr, are you serious?
Porsche gives us dr jekill and mr hide car and you complain?
I understand the waste of fuel, but that is it, best sound value for money. Better than having speakers or fake sound.
And bear in mind the fuel burnt comes from normal injectors, i.e. it acts as cooler for engine head. Nothing far from old school tuned cars or current rally cars (which have additional injector in the exhaust)

Cmon RBT0 are you serious? I don't think so. If I buy a GTS I am (in effect) paying (over £1K?) for what I consider an abortion - are you surprised I'd resist?
If you like it fine. The argument about cooling is irrelevant. If you needed to cool the head there might be an argument (albeit very thin), but there isn't.
But I'm glad you finally accept that you are burning fuel to produce a historic engine defect.

By your somewhat flawed logic ( you seem to overlook the fact that buying a sports car is an emotional possibly even an irrational decision) you'd better not buy any current Porsche sports car with their thermally inefficient petrol engines. Wait until they introduce a Boxster D - a diesel makes any petrol engine look inefficient and poorly engineered. Oh dear, Porsche have said they will never produce diesel sports cars. better buy a nice Skoda Octavia diesel instead. Very logical purchase.
for anyone not to like the pops and bangs, are not true petrol heads, better getting a people carrier too suit sir's taste!, and the whole wasting fuel story, should have purchased a pirus or like, if you added up the amount of fuel wasted in the sport mode, it will be laughable the extra that's wasted

Why should I like an engine malfunctioning? Bizarre. You're clearly not an engineer.
Here I am. An other Automotive engineer discovered as not true engineer.
Yes because I've bought a CGTS with waste of fuel incorporated.

Jesus two many having their period.
PSE or Aftermarket rule - or go drive a passat and enjoy the lifeless experience that comes with it, I will stick to farting, worked for me in school, works for me now

Well here's a qualified marine chief engineer that also bought an inefficient fuel wasting badly engineered Boxster GTS....!!
We've all made a mistake here - not with buying the cars we have but because we've not ignored an obvious troll that simply gets a kick out of winding people up. He knows no better and obviously doesn't understand why people such as us enthuse about the magnificent cars we have purchased with our hard - earned. Hopefully if we ignore him with any luck he'll go away and troll elsewhere.

Well I'll give you 10/10 for persistence. Please do go elsewhere though, you are not welcome on this thread, (or likely on any other if you behave on them as you have here) the rest of us children will just get on and play nicely together.
Picked up my daughter from school yesterday in the GTS, with Fart+ (err, sorry Sports+) enabled and in manual mode holding onto low gears as long as possible to get maximum pop, fart, bang, boom, crack and general mayhem happening on downshifts.
The sheer loudness and obnoxiousness of the exhaust is totally addictive and so much fun; either people completely crap themselves as the sound assaults them from behind, or testosterone-laden school lads give you thumbs up and cheers as you violate the airspace around the school grounds.
Meantime, motor engineering types tootle away in their silent sportscars knowing just how fuel efficient and responsible they are being.
Oh, and keep feeding the troll, he's given us much amusement

I've taken to warming it up as quickly as I can, sticking it sport(fart)+ and making the maximum number of pops, bangs, farts and crackles as I can on most drives and especially when picking my other half up from her Fleet St offices after work. Load of stuffy law types around there need a bit of livening up
Driving around making all this glorious noise is a huge grin factor when you can't actually enjoy the dynamics of the ride because you are stuck in dense London traffic. I don't care if I'm burning a bit of extra fuel, because I like driving the bloody thing. If I wanted to be fuel efficient, I'd use one of our other cars, but I like making a tonne of noise and acting like a child!
+1 another Engineer here btw. Seem's like we all make REALLY poor car choices...

Men after my own heart newbieninja and koorby, it's that grin/kid inducing feeling that is unbeatable. Was a factor for me anyway, I think I'd struggle to get another 'sports' car without a 'special' sounding exhaust, gives the car so much character, and I wanted to feel something after so many clinical sports cars. I almost bought an F-Type V6S, the exhaust sound was fantastic on the one I tried (V8's better/different again) and it almost had me, the Cayman S I tried immediately after without PSE left me cold(er). A days loan of a 2.7 Cayman with PSE convinced me and (and of what a wonderful car it is to drive even in that configuration) and I ordered the CGTS the day I handed the 2.7 back, the fact the Jag dealer never called me back to arrange an extended drive of the V6S, and offered not a penny off the V6S coupe he had in his showroom at the time (September), which is still sat there to this day.
Anyway, for me, sound is/was a big factor, it adds to character (and I mean the kind I want to experience driving with no-one else around as opposed to the look-at-me kind, though hard to have one without the other I guess) - it sets the heart racing, and is what (should IMHO) set these kinds of cars apart, and while I can, I'm more than happy to pay for that...

Yes this is the only downside, I only have a 7mile trip to work each day, so the car only just warms up as I arrive. Compared to other cars the GTS seems to take an age for water and oils to warm up, so you can hammer the loud pedal

During break-in I was super careful, but now I simply wait until it reaches about 25c and start revving up to the 3-4.5k mark. Someone will be along to tell me I'm killing my car, but i find it actually warms up quite quickly if I do that, and when it is at about 90c, it's drive it like you stole it time.

I do the same, I have PDK so tend to keep it in auto for first 5min, before using up manual mode to 4k revs (slowly).
For what its worth I think the noise dies down a little with the PDK in sport after 10k (or maybe I'm just getting used to it).
Still, fully manual, gunning second then lifting off...... beautiful sound.

really? interesting... I've only done a ~3k miles (w/pdk) so can only say it gets louder after first thousand and not noticed any let off. 10k miles is good going? mine is a DD to work, but I ensure I use the other car in the house for a shopping trolley. You must be in yours all the time?
We collected our Boxster GTS - fantastic sunny day, roof down of course, and the thing I noticed most was the roar and crackle on manual downshifts. (Mine is PDK). Don't think I'll ever tire of all that waste fuel crackling out of the exhaust! The only downside we noticed was on the motorway at a steady 70 - 75 mph the exhaust was quite boomy and I ended up turning it to quiet mode. Trying to stick to 4,500 rpm for the running in period - not easy - but can't wait for the running in period to end and fully explire the musical repertoire!
But even on the first day - what a car!!!!!!!!!

Genuine apology : I got here from "Whats New" and missed it being in the Porsche section.
It's your sub-forum : enjoy your cars, pops bangs and all.
If this was General Gassing I would feel obliged to keep disagreeing, but it isn't, and I won't.

Accepted & not a problem!!
So I think I found a new stage on the PSE today, (i've now covered 5k miles) - after pressing on for about 10mins and in the weekend heat, I found if you take the car up to the limiter (or just before) and then lift off the throttle, in addition to the normal overrun back note, today I was consistently get 'shot gun' noises in the first 1-2 seconds of lift off.
Sounded epic and haven't had that before despite running the car at pace and repeating. Wondered if anyone else has noticed this yet? And is this something i've just stumbled across now by chance, or is this not there for others yet...
Or of course the exhaust is falling apart already!
Now driven 1,000 miles in our Boxster GTS, and although still observing the running in recommendations I never tire of the wonderful sound the car makes. We finish work early on Fridays in Portsmouth so for an aural treat I headed up the A3 and did the full surround sound thing in the Hindhead Tunnel (mindful of the 70 mph SPECS average speed cameras of course)... what a sound!!!!!Slowed to around 20 mph on entering the tunnel - thankfully traffic quite light - then up to 5,000 rpm first and second, back down and do it all over again.... out of the tunnel, off the A3 just north and then back through again...
The Cayman GTS might be marginally better handling and have + 10bhp over the Boxster but my God do they ever miss out on the sound!
Will I ever grow up? Hopefully not!!
dreamcar said:
Little point in you buying a Boxster or Cayman GTS then - you wouldn't appreciate it as it would be far too uncouth for you. As for me I think it's one of the finest sounding modern cars out there. Sports cars aren't supposed to sound like muffled vacuum cleaners.

Apologies for the bang and splutter of 4 posts in a row
Just read this whole thread and loved it.
Seems Porsche engineering in nice sounds for us never to grow up 'lads' is actually an abortion of engineering... hopefully they'll abort some more things that we'll enjoy!
Sadly no tunnels in Guernsey, but there is a nice long hill with high granite walls that works quite well
One day, maybe, I could get bored.
At the moment, every journey is so special. Every week end after some proper driving I've got the exhaust sound rounding into my mind and every time I am astonished.

Do yourself a favour - next time you come across to the mainland take the conventional ferry to Portsmouth (more chance of getting there with all the problems Condor are having with their "new" Condor Liberation)Hindhead Tunnel is only 30 miles from Portsmouth straight up the A3. 1.5 miles of surround sound bliss!

I shall give it a go!
I prefer the conventional ferry as they don't cram the cars in so far less risk of damage.
Seems the 'Liberation' is far from liberated on the car deck and is in fact as tight, if not tighter for space (sounds unbelievable I know) than the ferries it replaces...

Condor Express and Vitesse well past their sell by dates - I used to dry dock those things in Portsmouth!
