Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi Everyone
I've test driven a 996TT TipS at an OPC today and I'm pretty much decided that I'm going to ring them tomorrow and do the deal.
It drove superbly, but I've got a couple of quick questions;
1) It has an auto dimming interior mirror and drivers door mirror (auto-dim) but not the passenger mirror. Is it normal for the passenger mirror not to be an auto-dim one or has someone just not replaced it with the correct glass as breaking it?
2) Two of the brake calipers are looking like they are loosing their colour and going very matt looking. Is there a fix / refurb process / exchange available on these?
3) It doesn't have cruise control but I'd like this. Is it possible to retro-fit and can the dealer do this? I seem to remember reading somewhere it's possible.
Any quick replies very much gratefully recieved!
Thanks,
Will.
1.) Never noticed... Not sure
2.) Pretty sure a couple of people on here have had theirs painted / re-painted, so yes (I would get that done as part of the deal).
3.) Yes - Wrightune in Wallingford can do this - about £500 on a C4, not sure on a Turbo... OPC will probably tell you it can't be done, though
So, you liked the Tip S then? :thumb:
1. Mirror dipping is an option as I asked if mine could be setup. But it wasn't optioned. There are some settings you can do via the key I believe as to how they work if you have the option. Check with the dealer but if one side dips I'd expect the other should also... but they can confirm this.
2. My wheels and callipers (including the replacement decals) where repainted by the dealer prior to me collecting the car... they look very sharp.
3. Not sure on the cruise control... but I've retrofitted many aftermarket kits on many cars for myself, and my experiance is that although okay they've never work aswell as those cars I've had which have theirs factory fitted.

Thanks both for your replies.
I did ask about getting the calipers refurbished and they didn't seem to think it was possible, but I took this with a pinch of salt as I felt sure it could be done by someone.
The deal is very good anyway and I'm getting them to do a few bits and bobs for me so I feel happy so won't push too much further - but I'll mention it again.
I'll take a look at wrightune and see what they can do ref the cruise - thanks for the suggestion.
Yes, I loved the TipS - it was way better than I was expecting and as people have said, let me concentrate on the road and not the shifting so I can really get the most from it. The shifts were clean and quick and it's very responsive.
More details later when I've made up my mind and either put a deposit down or not.
Just one other thing give consideration to a warrantee... If they aren't providing you with one, just go into the purchase with the understanding that potentially they are an expensive car to maintain. The last repair I had just cost me NZD $3,000 (about 1300 pounds) for what was in essence a blowen coolant pipe. After looking into aftermarket warranties and other advice on here I've decided to self warrant... which in essence means I'm just putting some money aside each month to cover any potential repairs and maintainence. Hopefully it'll be sufficient and ultimately if I don't use it I can spend it elsewhere...
Hi Itguy
Push them for a deal, even though its a Porsche, a deals a deal and they are hardly selling like hotcackes at the moment.Especialy 996's.Even turbos. Its a buyers market.
The calliper refurb is easy- get them to do it! Just back out if not plenty more fish in the sea! Will cost a dealer very little and they should be supplying the car mint, if not why not buy private, at private prices! that should already be done at any dealer.
On VAG products the cruise is £150.00 quid, its already fitted on cars with a computer, (it just needs a switch fitting nothing more.) Lets be honest the Porsche is a VW/Audi in essence in many ways so could be the same? They build the cars with the cruise already there in the factory, the cruise is normally dealer fit.
Pasenger mirrors arent Auto dip, theres no need, its an antiglare feature which isnt needed passenger side. Again the same on Vag group cars-bet you a pound they are the same parts as with the cruise!
Presumably you mean the green sheen which prevents the glare as opposed to mirror actually moving? They can be dipping to view the kerb when parking though? Is this what you mean?
Car will come with OPC Porsche Warranty for 12 months so no worries there
Ref the dimming mirror - thats good to know, just wanted to check.
I've had a L322 Range Rover which had dimming wing mirrors and both dimmed, not just the drivers side - I know as I had to replace one and they are £300 just for the glass so wanted to make sure it is meant to only have one, not both.
The Range Rover also had a dipping passenger mirror when putting it in reverse and it was horrible! I disabled it and never used the function (partly as it had a reversing camera) so I think I'll probably use it on the 996.
I'll ring them today about the deal and talk about the calipers. They're the only bit that really isn't in mint condition - I'm sure they'll sort them once I push a bit.
I've bought it!
Haggled harder and got more road tax and although they can't (or won't) refurb the calipers, they've given me the £200 back that it will cost me to get them done at design911 so I'm well chuffed.
Great deal.
I collect on 31st March as I'm stacked out with work but they've got a plate transfer to put on it and sort a few bits out (1 door dink, no paint) and some new floor mats.
Pics up soon in new thread!
Good news on great car and deal.
But OPCs will not retrofit cruise on a 996 since retrofit does not have Porsche type approval apparently. Therefore unfortunately retrofit will invalidate new style warranty if installed by Wrightune or any indy (if OPCs notice it when doing any servicing or warranty work).

ahh ok - maybe one of those things to add to the wish list for 12 months time when the warranty is finished.
I bet they wouldn't notice anyway - and you're assuming something is going to go wrong meaning it needs to be going back!
(perhaps I'm going into the whole 996TT thing with my eyes partially shut!)
As long as it goes in less than my L322 Range Rover did (16 times, 9 faults in 2 months) then I'll be happy.
