So I replaced my tie rods recently and went in for an alignment. Found a reputable shop that specializes in European cars as well as track cars. I track my
987.2 Cayman
maybe once or twice a year if I am lucky; would be more but my track has not been having open track days as often since covid.
Anyways, I was considering going with the following setup that I found on here for stock suspension setups:
Front:
max out camber (maybe -1 degree)
Zero total toe
Rear:
-1.5-2 degrees camber (or max out)
0.12-0.18 degrees total toe-in
Ended up just requesting a stock alignment seeing as how I don't track the car that much and I am hoping this season to get my E36
M3
out more. However, the guy just went ahead and did his own setup since I mentioned I track the car
and this is after they destroyed my front lip. They ended up ordering a new one, painting and installing however, I might just go and let them paint it and re-install it myself but I digress.
Anyways, he ended up setting me up with the following:
Front:
-0.2 degrees camber
0.11 degrees total toe (0.05 and 0.06)
Rear:
-1.5 degrees camber
0.22 degrees total toe-in (0.11 and 0.11)
Any one run a similar setup? I don't know if he tried maxing out the front camber or if he just assumed that would be better. There is a reputable
Porsche
guy that several people recommended who works there but I don't know if he was involved at all in my alignment.
The car seems to drive fine though I haven't pushed it at all. I have found the stock settings in All-Data however, there measurements are not in degrees and I have attempted to convert them but they just seem way off. Do you guys think this setup is worth keeping and/or within spec or should I have him change it, perhaps to my original setup I wanted to go with?
Also, side note, the alignment cost me $240.00...seems a little nuts to me. I realize it's a "reputable" specialty shop but that just seems insane, but also within reason based on the other prices I have seen on here for
Porsche
alignments. Does this seem outrageous? What is so special in the alignments compared to other cars or is it simply price gouging?
Thanks!
It’s outrageous alright… anytime you attach Porsche to a repair subject it’s like saying aviation or nautical…. well okay almost..
My favorite is needing tires put on a car.. over the phone they ask the wheel dimension (fare enough) and then ask what car it is (not important) especially when I’m not bringing the car in.. then I get the “well those are low profile tires”…. There all low profile now! It’s not an 83 Lasabre… what do you charge to change 4 tires and balance them? And not f’k up my wheels…
As for the alignment, your a little limited up front unless you get LCA’s and then you can get 2.5’ camber.. rears, the 2-2.5’ max works good for both styles of driving.. toe id go stock with your conservative front camber
