Hi again, been enjoying my new to me 08CS with the nice weather. I know these engines make more audible noise than your average sports car, but I can’t seem to figure out what’s normal and what’s not. From whining to clicking, how do you know if something is “off”? Here’s a couple videos of my engine at idle and at 4k rpm. I recently did an oil change with Mobil 1 0w40. I’ve driven about 800 miles on it and no consumption or smoke at cold start, idle, or driving.
08 CS idle
The tapping sound is normal. Mine does that at first if it’s been sitting for days/weeks. So scoring is your concern here, I can feel your concern. Some think I’m nuts, but I clean off my exhaust tips so they shine, the reason I do this so after I drive I can tell straight away how it’s running… a nice Carmel tint to carbon color is what I’m looking for…. I have an aftermarket exhaust so it’s easier to tell. Oil
Changes are paramount!! The whine noise I’ve never heard in either of my cars
Nothing scary sounding to me.. mebbe if I was there..
Oh I hear you on that. Lol my exhaust is aftermarket and has black tips, so it’s pretty hard to tell… they didn’t seem crazy sooty or anything the last time I cleaned them off.
My 05 BS also has both those noises. Regarding that ticking at idle; I took a mechanic's stethoscope and found that it was the fuel injectors. The whole rail ticks, and each injector ticks, and they all sound the same, so I'm pretty confident it's normal. They're just big injectors pushing lots of fuel and they're close to the outside of the car so they sound louder than other cars. The airbox and snorkel are also in the way on the right hand side which is why it sounds quieter or more muffled on that side. Nothing to worry about there.
The whine around 3K RPM was a big point of contention for me, I have one that tracks engine RPM and appears around 3K, then continues to about 4200-5000RPM before the engine noise drowns it out. I spent a lot of time and effort trying to figure out what it was, which included taking it to 2 shops for consultation, and DIY replacing the water pump, alternator, idler pulleys, tensioner pulley, belt, and power steering fluid. The sound has not changed in the 6-8 months or so that I've noticed it, and I daily drive my
Boxster
. I have resigned myself to accepting that it's normal. If you're interested, I made a writeup over at ******** about it and other people also seem to agree that our generation of engines just tend to be a bit whinier than others.

Either way your car seems to sound like mine, so for my own sake I'm gonna tell you it's normal
I wouldn't spend too long worrying. Life is short, enjoy the car.
The whine could really only be a belt driven accessory imo… the tick, ya very normal. Fuel injectors huh? Doesn’t surprise me. I’ve heard a bore scored flat 6 at an Indy shop, of course that noise could vary but that tick it was very evident, black exhaust, soot’d bumper cover, etc.
Laugh at me but that’s the reason I keep my exhaust tips polished out as it shows me what’s going on with the motor..

prior to going to a
Cayman
. The
Boxster
made a weird oil pump noise that the dealership acknowledge as normal yet changed the pump and it was gone. There were many reports about this on the web. My
Cayman
makes a faint whine right about 3000 RPM's and did this from brand new. I get the usual ticking upon start up as well. These mentioned noises all did this from new and the car is an 07. No issues, just common
Porsche
(in my experience) noise.
