Thanks - will whip the lid off the cover tonight to view, would expect the pump will be being replaced over the weekend.

Suggestion

You need to get the car recovered to a specialist as there is no way you should drive it given the fragility of these engines when it comes to them running too hot.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

8 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Morning all, bit of an issue with the car last night, haven't had it long so any advice welcome. driving on motorway last night and car started with intermittent faint squeal/screech noise (sounds like a tight belt or dry bearing), then the low coolant light came on. pulled into next services and filled up - sound intermittent. noticed on way home quite a bit of white vapour from back of car, coolant light came on again. on getting out there was quite a bit of steam coming from driver intake and generally around car. any ideas? I don't think it's head gasket as the car isn't down on power etc.

POST 2Original post

It could be the water pump as these are known to fail at some point. You need to get the car recovered to a specialist as there is no way you should drive it given the fragility of these engines when it comes to them running too hot. Edited by Trev450 on Wednesday 15th April 12:30

ok thanks. just so i understand how do they fail? is it a case of them disintegrating and leaking coolant out onto the hot engine to cause the steam? Leigh
