I'm picking up my new toy, sorry car next week (MY03 C2 coupe manual), it's got the PSE fitted which sounded great when I test drove it but I'm also thinking about having this done in addition.

The gist of the tests I read were that the conventional one declined in efficiency far more slowly than the K&N so the small K&N power advantage only lasted for the first 1,000 miles or so after which it caused the engine to produce less power than the one fitted with the conventional filter.

Right, out on the road - again, the noise was incredible; the sound changing from a roar to a howl - at around 5000rpm it just comes alive.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

As the title suggests; I am off to the Porscheshop later today to have the kit fitted and then looking forward to the drive home back to Derby. Haven't been this excited for quite some time. :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo:

POST 2Original post

Looking forward to a full report! I fancy one for the 997S and will wait to see what you think I worry about fitting a sports exhust and the noise levels for trackdays. Perhaps the induction kit would give a lovely sound without going over the top!? Freddie

POST 3Original post

Keen to hear about this too. My 04 Targa is completely stock, and I fancy just a tad more noise without being too anti-social. I'm guessing this adds a bit more roar when you put your foot down, but probably doesn't liven up the idling burble any? Lets hear the verdict! H

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

VERDICT TIME OK, so I went over to the Porscheshop and left the guy to get on with it - i sat in their very comfortable waiting area working on my laptop and smiled a little when I heard the car being driven into the workshop - you know the noise!!!! About 50 minutes passed by and then I heard another noise - this was very different to the one nearly an hour before; it was almost a deep roar; I sat and imagined that everytime he revved it there would be spanners and stuff flying off shelves getting sucked into the back of it - it really did make the place tremble. So in terms of noise - that box was properly ticked!!! Right, out on the road - again, the noise was incredible; the sound changing from a roar to a howl - at around 5000rpm it just comes alive. Any change in power? Not sure about this one; the boys at the Porscheshop reckon it adds another 23bhp (indeed the leaflet that comes with it says the same) but I really can't say that there is a discernable increase; the car was fast before and it is still bloody fast; perhaps there is a little more torque; I played around a little on the A38 on the way back to Derby; but if I'm being totally honest, most of that "fun time" was spent listening to the lovely noise. I would be interested to hear from any other 996 drivers who have one and have view on the power. Value for money - at £300 fitted I would say yes; it is a worthy accessory, not over the top; you can still drive the car quietly, but you can also rattle some windows too! Happy, happy, happy!

POST 5Original post

Clearly sounds amazing! You've completely sold me on that explosivo :thumb: I'm giving them a ring a later :bandit:

POST 6Original post

Sounds like this ticked all the boxes for you. I'm picking up my new toy, sorry car next week (MY03 C2 coupe manual), it's got the PSE fitted which sounded great when I test drove it but I'm also thinking about having this done in addition. The 2 question I have about this are - 1. Do you have to inform your insurance company about having this mod done and will it alter your premium? 2. Is this mod any better than the DIY CAI ones being talked about (orange cap etc)?

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I will be letting my insurance firm know - don't know at this stage if it will increase my premium, but I'd be happier doing that then risking an argument over paying out if the car ever got damaged/written off. Sorry, not sure about question 2.

POST 8Original post

It's my understanding, from the K&N thread a couple of weeks back, that the 'standard' CAI modification would produce a similar (if not the same) sound as a K&N system. However, the K&N offers an increased *possibility* of providing more BHP because of it's cone shape, replacement filter and heat shield. As my goal is purely an improvement in sound, I'm going to go simply replace the stock tube and also modify the airbox slightly (a-la the Orange cap). The OPs write up is very encouraging, and by the sounds of it you won't be disappointed whichever route you choose.

POST 9Original post

Am very pleased with my K&N CAI although the fitting was not that difficult to do yourself. Sound is worth it alone from 4000 rpm upwards.

POST 10Original post

Sounds fun. Anybody got any views between the K&N kit and the EVOMS kit? Anybody fitted the EVOMS kit?

POST 11Original post

From some independent tests I read a while back fitting a K&N will provide some increase in power compared to a poorly designed conventional filter on the day you fit it. But its rate of decay is far greater and within a couple of weeks use it will be delivering less power than the conventional ones. But the figures are tiny, I doubt if, on a 911, you'd ever really notice the difference. Settle for it maiking a nice noise and that will be a result in itself.

POST 12Original post

+1, except the standard 996 filter and airbox isn't poorly designed. (Not that you said it was, Rob. I realise it was just a general comment). Wild claims IMHO. Do it for the noise, and nothing else, and you won't be unhappy. Take care not to over-oil the filter though, as it's the kiss of death for the MAF.

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi Are you saying that by having the K&N fitted, in time, the engine will produce less power than it would have if the stock air filter had been left on?

POST 14Original post

In a nutshell, yes. The efficiency of both filters reduces as they... er... filter. The gist of the tests I read were that the conventional one declined in efficiency far more slowly than the K&N so the small K&N power advantage only lasted for the first 1,000 miles or so after which it caused the engine to produce less power than the one fitted with the conventional filter. Of course you can counter this by cleaning out the K&N every 1,000 miles or so. Or just accept the small reduction in power which you almost certainly won't notice, in exchange for the better sound
