Good idea on replacing the clutch, I will investigate further.
Leading evidence: 'Replace clutch, i will investigate further' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace clutch, i will investigate further' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. Do you think changing the transmission oil would be a good place to start?

the car's covered >15k miles since it started and it doesn't affect the way it drives in any way beyond the noise irritation - which is somewhat off set by a loud exhaust!

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi all :bye:
I had my MY99 C4 in at Motortune on Friday for a major service. I was pleasantly surprised at the cost of the service and the level of feedback from Paul on my car. Some minor issues to address, mostly consumables, tyres, pads, etc.
Anyway.......as I have commented on here before, I have been experiencing a noisy transmission which Paul is going to further investigate when I can free the car up for a few days. Has anybody else had anything similar? Do you think changing the transmission oil would be a good place to start?
Thanks,
Andy
Is it a manual or Tipo? also what sort of noise, a whine, clunk, or something else. Is it there all the time or only with power on... not sure about the rest of the followers on here but more info might help... Kiwi
Kiwi,
I was a bit vague initially, it's a manual, with 80k miles, it's more of a whine than a clunk around 60mph - 90mph when depressing the accelerator.
Peter at Motortune thinks it may be from the prop shaft coupling to the front wheels and would like to disconnect it and essentially drive it as a C2 and see if the noise is present.
Advice/Comments?
On my Tipo Turbo I had a whine under power comming from the transmission. On investigation we found the Gearbox mount was shagged. After replacing it the whine has gone. The shagged mount was also causing other issues though, specifically under tight cornering loads it created a vibration. Not sure if this is of any assistance but thought I'd just mention it. Kiwi
Just to define the whine I had... I really noticed it at the 100km/h speed under minimal throttle. If I let go of the throttle it stopped. But as I said it was also causing a vibration under tight corners under load. Kiwi
Likely to be a shagged pinion bearing in the diff.
Mine started about a year ago - a faint whine under load in higher gears at 60-90mph. It's gradually got worse over time to the point where it whines pretty much all the time now.
I've done some research and it's not a cheap fix... seems around £1,500 is the starting point, but that assumes only the bearing needs replacing.
Stotty,
Sounds very similar to what your experiencing.
Hopefully get some clarity in the next few weeks if I can free up the car for a few days.
Whats your plans for repair?
Not sure yet... the car's covered >15k miles since it started and it doesn't affect the way it drives in any way beyond the noise irritation - which is somewhat off set by a loud exhaust!
Option 1 is have the pinion bearing repaired and the gearbox looked over at the same time - may as well stick a new clutch in while the transaxle is out as the labour would be free in effect... I guess around £2k with all the bits and bobs assuming the gearbox is OK.
Option 2 is a complete new transaxle - haven't looked in to this beyond noticing that design911 do these for £3k +vat fully fitted.
Good idea on replacing the clutch, I will investigate further.
Back to my original comment, do you think draining and replacing transmission oil might highlight damage in transmission or even reduce/stop the whine?
