Apparently, they found that it leads to residues on the inlet valve, particularly if the car is used predominantly on short trips/low revs.

One other interesting thing I found out talking to someone in Stuttgart the other day: I don't know what petrol you use, but they don't recommend using Shell Optimax.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

My car is now 6 months old and last week I topped up the oil with 1/2l Mobil 1. When doing this I noticed a creamy emulsion in the neck of the filler pipe - is this normal ? Most of my journeys are short at the moment (<15 miles) - can this explain the water in my oil ? The weather has also been unusually warm over here in the UK, which I'd expect would reduce any such build up compared to winter time. Experiences appreciated.

POST 2Original post

I think it sounds like moisture... so your choices (IMHO) are drive further and get the engine hotter or change your oil more often.

POST 3Original post

Hi, haven't noticed the warm weather here in Chipping Sodbury :-) As for your problem, I've noticed the same thing and brought it to the factory's attention when I had my car serviced in Stuttgart two years ago. They told me it is nothing to worry about, it is basically an emulsion consisting of motor oil vapour and condensation from ambient humidity. It only occurs in the filler pipe, so it doesn't affect the engine. I almost never drive my car short distance so I don't think it's related to your <15mls trips. One other interesting thing I found out talking to someone in Stuttgart the other day: I don't know what petrol you use, but they don't recommend using Shell Optimax. Apparently, they found that it leads to residues on the inlet valve, particularly if the car is used predominantly on short trips/low revs. I found that quite surprising given what Shell says about all those detergent additives they put into Optimax. Cheers Uwe
