Suggestion
Some tyre types can get a bit loud when they are worn down, certainly found this to be the case when i was running pirelli's.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have just purchased a 996 C4 , i need to know the size of wheels it has, on the rear wheels next to the air valve is a 9 then a space then 52, is this a 9J wheel ? i am getting alot of road noise and a whining and we think the wrong tyres are fitted on the rear causing this , any help would be greatly appreciated ??
what size of rims are they, 17's or 18's?
Never had 17's on but 18's are a 10" wide rear rim

Congrats on the new car and :useless:
You'll find rim sizes on the back of spokes if in doubt
rims
they are 18's, but in the manual it mentions 9J and 10J rims and the tyres to match, how do i know if they are 9's or 10's ? The tyres on the back are 285 x 30 which are for 10's and the 9's should have 265 x 40 i think. The tyres are virtually brand new pirreli's N4 Rosso's .
The numbers cast into the rim by the valve are the width (9J) and offset (52mm). I'd agree that a 285/30 tyre is a little OTT for a 9J rim and I'd expect a 265/35 (or even a 255/35 although probably not) for that size wheel.
I'm no expert on the 996 but I can't see any 9J/ET52 wheels listed in PET as standard for any 996 so they may be non-standard wheels anyway.
Regards
Dave
wheel sizes, rim widths and tyre sizes are in the owners manual
and on the tyre pressure chart which should be under the bonnet or the doors or door shuts
rims
Thank you dave , the rims are definately 9's and the tyres 285 x 30 , do you think this would cause the extra noise and a whining sound, its a bit like being in a wind tunnel. In the manual it mentions 10j and 9j but i didnt know if the 9 on the rim was relevant .
I have a 2003 Carrera C2.Just checked the rims and tyres.
Fronts each side of the valves 8 and 50.Tyres 225/40/18.
Rears each side of valves 10 and 65.Tyres 285/30/18.
Hope this helps.
Just looked at a couple of Porsche books on specifications for 996 and as far as I can tell the only 9J wheels available are in 17" with 255/40/17 tyres.
If your wheels are 9J and 18" they are probably not original Porsche.
