Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Clean mass air flow sensor' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check done' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I just used an electrical cleaning spray from Maplin and it worked a treat.

Suggestion
Yes obviously it serves a purpose and Im not advocating leaving it disconnected (just a short test), the ECU will automatically run a a basic map with it disconnected and you will be able to eliminiate it in your diagnosis, if you are still getting a flat spot then its some thing else.

Suggestion
(warm your engine up first) to eliminate the MAF just disconnect the cable to it with the ignition off, then go for a short drive, if your flat spot disappears then your MAF is toast and you need a new one or it needs a clean.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have recently been experiencing a slight hesitation in engine power at around the 5k rpm mark. I realise this is a bit of a vague statement, but it's only a slight sensation. I'm sure that the car used to pull strongly from 5 - 7 k rpm but now it seems to go a bit flat once you hit 5k. Also it seems that not opening the throttle completely eases the problem and the engine seems to rev through slightly more easily and freely.
Bit of background, unsure of the relevance. I've recently had a bit of a tinker with the cold air induction system, I tried one of the CAI mods mentioned on here (blocking off acces to the resonator chamber in the airbox from the airbox-throttle butterfly pipe). Whilst doing this I revved the car to >4k rpm more often to listen for differences due to the mod, this is when I first started wondering if something was slighly amis. This tinkering exposed the MAF sensor to the open air (although I was careful not to touch it or anything like that), I was wondering if I might have dirtied it? Although it looks OK on visual inspection.
Any advise / help / relevant info gratefully received.
I had the same when I fitted my CAI. I took the MAF out and cleaned it with electrical cleaner and full power and smile were restored.
Hopefully yours will be as easy....
Is the idle smooth and stable, or has it gone a bit lumpy? If it is smooth, then I agree you should try cleaning the MAF. If it is lumpy or erratic, then I would get a diagnostic check done.
As most of us are driving relatively old cars, is it a worthwhile operation to give the MAF sensor a good clean anyway. Or is it a risky operation that should only be performed if there's a perceived problem?
I think you have to be careful how you clean your MAF, I think it's a pretty sensitive pice of kit and any residue left behind by a cleaner can affect it's operation.
I bought some Wynn's Carburettor Cleaner from Halfords. I've sinse been watned that car cleaner can sometime contain some lubricants which may leave a residue on the MAF, so I don't think I'll use it.
What have other people used to clean the MAF? I've seen IPA mentioned specifically, any other electrical cleaners that are suitable?
IPA (isopropyl alcohol, not the beer) evaporates and leaves no residue.
Spray IPA into MAF, gently shake excess IPA and suspended dirt from hot wire cavity.
Repeat until no further debris in MAF (only two or thee times).
The reason: although the IPA evaporates completely, if dirt is not "flicked" out whilst IPA is still liquid it will simply be re-deposited on IPA evaporation.
(warm your engine up first) to eliminate the MAF just disconnect the cable to it with the ignition off, then go for a short drive, if your flat spot disappears then your MAF is toast and you need a new one or it needs a clean.
Once youve done your test turn ignition off again and reconnect.
faulty variocam solenoids are also a common problem and cause flatspots at that sort of rpm

Sorry, wasn't being funny - I just wondered what happens if the MAF is disconnected. One of my colleagues mentioned it might run on a basic default map.
