Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.
Discussions that performed work without a confirmed outcome

0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Leading evidence: 'Use stainless exhaust' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'top mounts)' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace all)' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

First job is some 18" genuine turbo-look twists to replace the C4 17" alloys.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

EDIT: Pics are gone, from this thread, but here are some more:
Recently bought this 3.4 C2:
Edit: colour is Vesuvio Charcoal, not quite the same (but similar) to the Vesuvius 993s.
Not seen or heard of other 996 in this colour, perhaps it was a special order? Its kind of dark grey, but can look brown or a bit purple in the sunlight!

I'm tempted to have the turbo-look wheels re-finished in darker steel grey, like the rare 993 "Vesuvius edition" - however I won't go as far as steel grey mirrors and handles.

Sorry, not a 996, but i do have a vesuvius 993 narrow body.
Again, rare colour, especially on 993's as this was reserved for the wide body variants!
'Tis a beautiful colour, grey through to purple dependant on the light. Yours looks great in the photo, captured the colour really well. Enjoy. :thumb:
Nice, its very rare, congrats.
Its actually called Vesuvio not Vesuvius.
Vesuvio is a little darker, more plummy in colour than Vesuvius, very subtle but they are NOT the same so don't get caught out if you ever need anything painting etc.
I've never seen a Vesuvius 996 in the flesh but that car, in that colour, brings back memories for me as it was after reading the 2008 EVO Magbook 'Porsche Supercars' that I decided that I would definitely be buying a 996.
There was a 'buying guide/feature' on the 996 and the car used to illustrate the article was a Vesuvius 996.1 C4.
fyi the colour is listed in Adrian Streather's '996 The Essential Companion' book as Vesuvius Grey Metallic (Brochure Code K3) - special order paint colour code 40.
Thanks for all the comments! I was a little wary of buying it as it could be a "marmite" colour (in fact it literally looks the colour of marmite in some lights...), however I really liked it in the flesh so no worries 8)
Ah! I have heard it described as "Vesuvio Charcoal", made the assumption it was the same, I guess I will look up the paint code later.
Ha! yeah round the corner from the seller's house. I had to stop and take a pic in the sunlight to share before the long drive home.....
Well, almost 2 months into 996 ownership now 110k on the clock.
Work done:
- Oil Castrol Magnatec 10w40
- Oil Filter Bosch
- Air Filter Hengst
- Spark Plugs Denso
- Left window regulator
- Drill / tap roof rack mounts
To Do:
- Gearbox Oil 75w90 Synth
- Brake Fluid Pagid DOT 4
- Left side Coil pack heatshield (corroded, leading to coil damage)
- 6x New Coils (left ones are cracked but still working, best to replace all)
- Fit Low temp thermostat
- Fit mesh to stop leaves getting into rad cavity.
- Trace Air con leak (looking likely to be the fatter pipe under drivers sill)
- Front Suspension "rattle" over uneven surfaces (suspect top mounts)
- Geo setup
- Refurb genuine turbo-look 18" wheels and new tyres
- Fix minor body corrosion
- Look out for a nice used stainless exhaust
Where to stop (the list is getting longer!)...
Vesuvio and Vesuvious are both correct
One is Anglicised (ius) and one Teutonic (io)
The earlier solvent-based paint is code L40W, the later water-based paint is code L40X.
There full name is "Versuv(io/ius) Metallic" - there is no reference to "grey" or "charcoal".
These additions are often added by dealers too scared to call it purple! (the same dealers who call "Aventura Green Metallic" "Aventura Grey Metallic"!)
Finally the list is getting shorter, work done:
- Left side Coil pack heatshield (Genuine)
- 6x New Coils (Car Parts 911 OE)
- Fit Low temp thermostat (Wahler from Berlyn services)
- Top mounts and bearings (OE / Genuine)
- Both front forked arms (TRW from Mister-Auto)
- Front Right ARB droplink (Febi-Bilstein from Mister-Auto)
- OSF wheel bearing (FAG)
To Do:
- Gearbox Oil 75w90 Synth
- Brake Fluid Pagid DOT 4
- Fit mesh to stop leaves getting into rad cavity.
- Trace Air con leak (looking likely to be the fatter pipe under drivers sill)
- Geo setup
- Refurb genuine turbo-look 18" wheels and new tyres
- Fix minor body corrosion
- Look out for a nice used stainless exhaust
- Observe engine oil weeping.....
