Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Replace i couldn't remember what the exact spec it was' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace i couldn't remember what the exact spec it was' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Does it offer more protection under the oil starvation conditions we can run into under severe (and rare) g-loads on the track?

For others I have been told to look for the european formula and like Atlas_Croc says you can use 5W-40.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

The difference is the hot viscosity (thickness/flow). The 40 means that the oil will not thin out as much as a 30 when its hot. You need the 0 for cold operation to insure good oil supply to the lifters and other tight passages when heavier weight oils won't flow as well. You need the 40 to insure good lubrication when the oil is hot. If it thins too much it may not adequately coat surfaces. The oil also serves an important engine cooling function which may be diminished with too thin an oil.
Bottom line:
Porsche
's rec of 0W40 is not random, but results from extensive testing. Don't second guess on your engine's life blood.
Just on the side,......when I went to hunt down the oil for my first oil change I couldn't remember what the exact spec it was. I knew it was a 0w-something, but couldn't remember the second number. So I looked it up in a few parts counter books and they all listed two specs.....the 0w-40 and 5w-40 I believe. The 0w-40 is specified for temps that fall below -13 degree F, where the 5w-40 is listed for everything above those extreme cold temps. As STLPCA states, the second number (40) is the most important number here. So if you live in a warm climate, the 5w-40 will be fine (and seems to be a bit more common), but if your in a colder northern climate the 0w-40 is for you. I live in the south and still went with the 0w-40 as I found it quite easily.
I am about to change my oil and wanted to look into Mobile 1 Racing Oil. Looking on the Mobil 1 site I discovered that Mobile 1 0W-30 is different from 0WS-40 in more than just the viscosity (see link below). In fact, 0W-40 has more zinc and phosphorus than 0W-30. 0W-40 is about halfway between 0W-30 and Mobil 1 Racing Oil in zinc and phosphorus. The values for 0W-30 is the same for all "low-performance" vehicles, and the numbers go up for performance vehicles, so I would go with 0W-40 for sure. What does anyone know about Mobil 1 Racing Oil on the track? Does it offer more protection under the oil starvation conditions we can run into under severe (and rare) g-loads on the track?

Articsilver you touched one very important point the antiwear additives are different for Mobil 1 0W-40. I have been told to stick to that weight if using Mobil 1. For others I have been told to look for the european formula and like Atlas_Croc says you can use 5W-40. Mike at TPC uses Red line 5W-40 because of the additive package.
I found out the hard way that not all Walmarts carry 0W-40, of any brand. My wife's
Boxster
decided it needed a quart of oil in central Oregon, and the only store nearby, a Walmart, did not carry any 0W-40. I bought a quart of M1 5W-30 instead, which won't do any harm. I had thought about sticking an extra quart in the trunk before we left, but forgot. I won't
next
time.
I just found a GREAT deal on 0W-40 Mobil 1 at Advance Auto. $26 for 5 quarts and they include a free Mobil 1 oil filter! While Mobil 1 does not have a filter for my
Cayman
, I got a free one for my Jeep Wrangler and my Yukon with the 10 quarts I just bought. Get it at this price while you can!
Race oils have different additives and different properties than non-race oils. For instance, better sheer strength, but less able to deal with the contaminants from daily driving. As a result, race oils are usually not recommended for use in street cars.
