Hi Guys. Im looking into getting into the world of Porsche! I have always wanted a 911, its my dream car.
I found a 2005 997 with 26k miles and they are asking for 41k. Is this a good deal? Im going to the dealer tomorrow to check it out.
Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks
Micah
Welcome and good luck with the search. From the latest Excellence buyers guide an 05 997 base coupe is 38 to 41k. So the price seems at the upper end. Also check Edmunds site for more info on values. Be aware that 05 was the first year of the new 997 model although generally they seem to be reliable. I had an 08 S model for a short while and it was a great car. In 2009 the 997.2 was released and it has significant upgrades including the all new DFI engine with no IMSB. Also the PDK transmission was an option if you are interested in an autobox. ******** is a good shource of info with an extensive 997 forum. The best advice I can give is don't be in a hurry. Porsche made a lot of 997s in a dizzying array of models- coupe, cab, targa, base, S, 4, 4S, turbos, GTs.....Do lots of research, test drive lots of them. Do your due dilligence when you find one you like including Carfax, and a PPI. Take your time and enjoy the search. Oh, and consider joining PCA. You can do that before buying and that can be a good resource for finding a car, shop to do PPI, service etc. Again good luck let us know how it goes.
Thanks man! I really appreciate it. It will be hard for me not to take the first thing i find, I've always been impatient. Haha!
Best advice I have seen right here. Be patient, get a PPI and if it is manual an over rev report. It took me more than 3 months to find my car and I feel lucky with that. Good luck
Depending upon the condition of the car and how it is optioned, $41K may or may not be a good deal. If I were buying a nine year old car, I would ask to see the service records. I would especially take a careful look at how often the oil was changed, and of course verify that all the maintenance services were performed in accordance with Porsche recommendations.
If money is within budget strongly suggest looking at the later 997.2 in the S trim. The whole 997 platform is a dream car that is suddenly within reach due to the 991 upgrade. If possible buy private party as the dealers are still asking top dollar for most low mile clean examples. Of course trades and financing comes into the picture and most first offers from dealers are swinging for the fence. I would insist on all papers and complete service records from birth. car fax is a good source to start your research but is overrated and no guarantee. s previously stated patience is the trick here, drive as many as possible and do your homework. I am absolutely thrilled with my 2010 S Cab after 3 months of ownership. Good luck with your purchase.
All great advice here. You never mention your budget but I have seen some low mileage CPO 997.2 cars listed for $60K. Since those are asking prices, I would think mid-fifties might be attainable. I sold my 09 for $55K in July. Use the Porsche NA search function to see what's available in used inventory at dealers nearby. It should be cheaper buying from an individual but if you can get a CPO car for the same money I would go that route. I found that the listings in PCA were pretty much all on the high side of acceptable pricing. Good luck.
