Yeah it was the combination of Coram's reputation and the 987's for oil starvation that put me off tracking the Cayman!

I need to make the point that my 718 is still not run in so I'm still around the 4K rev limit but it is a nice engine, I'll comment further when I have properly tried it.

Anyone preferred the previous GT4 over the new one? Am concidering getting into one of them again and truly torn between the looks of both.
i was thinking the same and compared the 2. quite an interesting comparison IMHO
boxer vs bodybuilder?
and if you black out the 981 rear lights...
Thanks for making a comparison like that, good to see them side by side. I think the 718 has more Audi flare to it while the original is pure Porsche subtle flare. Both stunning.
Very very interesting.
A clear effort to get more air through the radiators ....
The rear wing of the 718 in nicer ...
But I think I prefer the look of the 981 ... maybe that's because I own one ? !!

To me, the 981 GT4 feels more raw only because the engine is rougher and the suspension less sophisticated IMHO. YMMV
Armitage.Shanks said:
I know the 981 GT4 is 'technically' not a GT engine aren't GT cars known for the roughness of their engines? Mezger certainly were. On the plus side the lump in it is tried and tested.
A little rough can be fine, my 4.0 is a bit like that until it properly warms up. The 3.8 is differently rough because it feels more restricted and doesn't rev out as well. There must be something in the mapping that does it as the 981 Spyder feels better to me. Freeing up the 3.8 would fix that, hence me saying a 981 would benefit from a few tweaks.
Thats a good set of pics to make comparison... Boxer vs Bodybuilder is a great analogy.
Personally think the 981 looks more cohesive and natural, like skin pulled tight over muscle and sinew... more purely athletic.
718 looks overbuilt, visually heavier..has more visual mass, and overtly aggressive in pics, but it does look good in real life.
All in MY opinion of course.

No ones going to be buying anything bar toilet roll and pasta.
And stop lock steering locks, as cars are being stolen big time atm .

Nope. Not tried that as I'd need a big barn to store them in. It's more for the general shiote that you don't really need but tempts you to make a low ball offer

Great comparison on the site by side photos, and that has basically made my mind up that I prefer the 981 "boxer" :-)
i agree, though i've only briefly seen a 718GT4 in the metal on the road and not had a good look at one yet.
if i do upgrade from my current 981GTS, it will most likely be to the 981GT4. agree both look stunning though.
the minor performance and chassis differences don't really matter to me as i'll likely never notice them on the road (or track for that matter).
and the 981 has that epic engine sound that will likely never again feature on a Porsche.

You would notice the difference in the 718 GT4 handling if you've driven both, I certainly can. A custom mapped DSC controller would level the playing field though.

have you driven a 981 GT4 on the road ?, and not just that yellow pre production model around pec.
nothing wrong with the 981 GT4 chassis. I cannot see any one noticing the handling, esp as the 718 weighs more !!! so change of direction will be slower, that's just a fact of more weight !
Yes, and yes you can. They do feel different, as do the engines. The 718 is a .2 update after all, so like previous 997 and 991 GT3s the .2 is always an improvement.
The 981 GT4 is a great car though, especially at the current prices.

an update which you will not feel on the road handling wise imo and weight is the 718 downside.
yes the engines better I'll give you that (still torque ltd though), but rather a modded 3.8 unit.
Chassis is bloody good in the 981, it's the gearing letting the cars down and they are the same in both, you cannot say it's the chassis letting the 981 down, it's a mega unit in that dept.
having not driven the 718 GT4 the steering being lighter sounds a bad move ! and we all know about the lack of noise.
on track the 718 GT4 is a far better car no doubt and on the road the lower torque down the revs will make it a slightly better drive.
but at the end of the day it's not a big improvement over all, due to a torque limited engine and long gearing.
Cure those 2 things which a RS might do, it would be pretty mega.
i'll be honest, i'm more into the design, aesthetics and sound of a car than i am the slight performance and/or technical differences.
sure the 718GT4 engine may be technically better than the 981's, but the sound of the 981 engine vs the 718 is a much bigger deal for me. soon most cars will be near silent, so i'll enjoy what i can to its fullest before giving that up.
and sure the 718 will probably turn better and faster and more accurately than the 981, but does it really matter if you're not at or close to the limits of the car? can you honestly say you'll be anywhere near those limits on the road? or even on track for that matter...
edit - not knocking the 718GT4 by the way. it looks fab and i'm sure it's a great car
Edited by JasonSteel on Friday 27th March 13:31
What I'm saying is that it's not at the limit that you can tell the difference, straight away there is a feel difference in the engine and the chassis. It's more compliance than it is speed of steering and it's the pull and liveliness of the way the engine revs.
I'm not trying to start an argument with anyone, I'm just giving my experience having driven both. Maybe RSVP911, Geoff39GL or others will also chime in as they've driven both models too.
To be fair it was more aimed at the other party.... but I could just see two more pages of pointless back and fore! The world needs a bit more positivity right now!

look you did a complete u-turn on the GT4, and the .2 has the same major issues the .1 had. it's not the big improvement we all hoped for.
it's slightly better in some area and far worse in others.
You will never see it's flaws sadly so we will never see a honest review from you which is a shame.
you bigged up the GTS for 3 years which really is not that great a car, now we have this for 3 years. it's very testing for a forum when you jump in every thread and sing how great it all is.

goto track day after all this is over and ask Chris W or TDT for a go in the 981's it will shock you. and you might then realise how held back and unexciting the current 2 GT4 models are over 2 tuned one driven well, over having a hand shandy saying how much better the 718 chassis is FFS.
Personally I think the 981 gt4 is looking a bit of a bargain against a new 718 even against a manual 991.2 gt3(half the price). Could see prices drop as low as £55k for a good example with an average of £60k. But at £60k that's only £5k under list before extras which is about right under pre overs market conditions.
If I was buying a new 718 it would have to be the Spyder which IMHO is the pick of the 718 f6 bunch but perhaps that is because I had a 981 gt4 from new!

As I was brought into the discussion, I'll give my 5p worth.
From my position if I was given the opportunity to spec a new 718GT4 (my first new GT car) I was not going to turn it down, one of the last N/A manual cars, I therefore have added all sorts of unnecessaries as I intend to keep it (for at least 3yrs) so yes David I probably am a little biased but I will try to be objective.
Incidentally your comments on the 981GTS is a little unkind I also owned a manual BGTS which is probably in this day and age all the road car you really need, it is NOT a bad car you would have to try quite hard to loose it on a B road blast.
I need to make the point that my 718 is still not run in so I'm still around the 4K rev limit but it is a nice engine, I'll comment further when I have properly tried it. The steering and chassis of the base 718 car is better than the base 981, The steering feel was one of the weak points of the 981 in my opinion, the chassis is more compliant on the 718 which is an improvement on the road not sure on track as yet to track. My track days are for fun, I don't chase times and only do 3 or 4 per year, Chris W is far more of an authority on track driving but again that is not a fair comparison to the average Joe with a standard car. It is a long time since I last saw TDT (I think Oulton a while ago) when he was just starting with his car so can only go on what has been written on here but it sounds as though again he is now far from standard. I would never knock the 981GT4 it is a lovely car and if the gearing was sorted it would make such a difference, I only sold mine as I was getting a 718. My opinion is that the 718GT4 is a step on from the 981 very much Porsche style in a number of areas just that little bit better. Is it worth the extra money depends if you have one or not as David says if you have got one then you will probably say yes if not you will think its not worth the money. All I would say is try them both for at least a full day and then draw your own conclusion.
All my opinion based on less than 1000 miles in the 718
I have a 981.
Purely on looks, I think the 981 is the better car.
To drive (and despite not having driven the 718) - everything I've read about the 718 leads me to believe I would say it's the better car for me.
But if I get the call for a 718? I would probably refuse it. The cost to change is too much IMO. I would put that money towards adding a GR Yaris to my stable.
As someone with a 981 gt4 and had an order for the 718 GT4, I cancelled the order.
The reasons were simple...
The newer car for me, the non initiated is the same car but...
Costs so much more.
Has drastically more options.
Produced in much larger numbers.
The Spyder a better proposition.
The cosmetics aren’t to my taste - I have issue with the harder edges and lines. The rear lights etc.
It’s the sophomore car... not the original.
In ten years I felt the first gen will age better. It’s a bargain right now and those talking £55k prices could be right, but a lot of the world will have to have gone sideways for that to happen. GTS cars for £40k? 981s for £30k and suddenly every car underneath? Your homes would be worth so little too and money itself devalued so much. High long term unemployment.
Against a backdrop of money being the cheapest it’s ever been, and the last time that happened after a downturn, we had a booming overs market and housing price growth etc. Twice.
Not saying it will happen again, but in a year from now we will know I suspect.
Both cars amazing. Get either.

The world has gone sideways if you notice ....
Low mile high spec cars will easy be £59k come winter.
Bargain, not really. But at £59k and a few choice mods an option for sure. As a drivers car though the Evora 410 has to be worth a look at £60k. And if you are serious driver the Exige 410 at £60k is the car to own if you want to run 2 cars over one.
The GT4 did the one car thing quite well.

the economies have shut down - that’s not what I’m talking about. No one should be buying cars right now, so the world right now isn’t why I’d call sideways. There is no market.
I also said a Lot will have to have gone sideways. Not just a virus, but long term markets and the value of money needs to crash from many things around the whole world.
When this is finished, and it will finish, that’s when we’ll know what cars are worth. When we know what money is worth.

Think you are right. Amazing how many people think this will be over in a couple of months and the world will return to normal.

Just a touch of realism. Yes we will all be impacted but the poor in society will sadly suffer the most. I hope we get a fairer society at the end of all this. Things like classic car values have got grossly obscene when the average salary is £600 a week. Yes I run two Porsche cars but I don’t really need them. The manufacturers might get a shock once a lot of cars are handed back at the end of finance and the values are sub 20% of what they guaranteed. Hope they have hedged well. You could stomach that in one market but very painful worldwide. Still they have been pumping out too much metal with easy finance. History says it always ends in a bad way.
Yes, it’s sad for everyone and no one is unaffected. Said with sincerity.
My GT4 I hope to keep but if I have to, I’ll sell it.
How quickly it recovers - I’m divided. The world moves faster and faster.... we’re well prepped in economic downturns (disasters) so consumer confidence may be more resilient this time around and I hope so.
But... money will be soooo cheap to borrow. Inflation through the roof - having cash will be as bad as owning a car - maybe not but you get the idea.
Those that want cheap cars.... it doesn’t work that way. If your GT4 is worth £50k, your house just lost a third it’s value too.
Only thing that scares me is the length of time the world stops working.

For house owners they don’t care what the house is worth , it makes no odds unless you are selling to live in a tent !
There will still be a housing shortage on the other side of this, but values to house owners is a nothing value.
85% cars are on PCP people will just hand them back, again zero loss.

I am inclined to this view. First World problems. If values fall in every asset class, as long as your are trading up the price to change becomes less. And if you choose to trade out, you should have the cash so long as you didn't believe that secondhand cars would be worth more than the same car new ...
I hope that everybody gains maximum enjoyment from whatever car they choose to buy ... but I don't hope they will make a profit from them. If that was the reason for buying, they have fallen for the illusion that Porsche dealers have been peddling for the last eight years since 2011 when they were last struggling to sell new cars at list.

The fun is in the journey and that's why throughout the development of my car I've always taken driver tuition. I love giving passenger rides and sharing the experience of what is now MY GT4 with others. I can say being a few years ahead of TDT that I greatly admire the way that he has grasped the vision of what he and his car can be. There is also an element of risk management ...
There are others who have gone the Radical route ... too brave for me but I loved my passenger ride
If at any stage this stops being fun, stop it. But nobody should be making the fun from others ... IMHO.
The 718GT4 is a very very good car. I would like to believe that my modified 981 GT4 is better, but the fact now is that Porsche don't really want to know me.
Why ? Because they want to / need to sell new cars. How much are they investing in Taycan ?
The fact that this is a nonsense of an electric car (I own a 2014 BMW i3) is another matter of opinion

As a huge GT4 fan, and someone who comes on this thread purely to fantasise about owning one someday, can I say a big 'please' to join you on a passenger ride if our paths ever cross at a trackday!
I'm usually at Snetterton in the 'GT4' of the fwd hot hatch world, aka a Clio 200... oh and I'll happily give you a passenger ride, however unimpressive it may be after being in the Porker haha!
Cheers,
Tom
That's a deal ... Snetterton is not my best ... corner 1 is much faster than it seems and it takes time to get your head around ... but happy to try
Regarding the Clio, I had a 16v in the day, 205 1.9, Escort RS Turbo, Clio Trophy ... and curently a yaris GRMN which has done 2:12 at Oulton ...
When ? We must be patient ... !!
Awesome, can't bloody wait!
Yeah, Snetterton isn't as simple as it looks on paper, and you definitely need some some cojones to extract the maximum from turn 1! Last time I was there, Lotus On Track were running some sessions, I was amazed at the speed some of the Exiges were taking into that corner. I imagine your car can carry some serious speed round Coram?
Serious collection of metal in that list, very nice! I think all of them are now classics so you pick well. Big fan of the sporty Yaris.... have you seen the new GR-4 due later this year? Very tempting to put an order in for one of those.
My last car was a 987.1 Cayman, so I seem to be going in the wrong direction haha.
I guess (hope) track days will start up again in June/July, so maybe I can send you a PM and we can see if any of our dates match, although I can pretty much go to any date as I live 40 mins away, and have a flexible job when it comes to taking days off.
I would suggest watching for a date and posting here to build following ?
I am a member of the Lotus LOT ... the car comes in nicely under the noise limit and there's a good place to stay just down the road ... they have even built a petrol station adjacent to the circuit ... I nearly ran-out of fuel last time I was there as the on-circuit tank ran dry !!
It was 30 miles to the nearest Shell station and the car was showing zero miles when I got there ....
Coram is a corner that destroys a lot of engines due to oil surge ... it seems to go on forever ...
Let's do that
, I'll keep an eye out for dates and report back if and when.
Yeah it was the combination of Coram's reputation and the 987's for oil starvation that put me off tracking the Cayman!

30K miles, doesn’t sound like it’s a genuine Porsche warranty and “fully wrapped” would not encourage me to view. Even if it wasn’t for the virus
This is the problem with people making flyby comments. I actually took the time to speak to the owner. It’s a clear protective wrap - a completely positive attribute.

Surely the warranty is transferable on the chassis if it a Porsche OPC product?
The below is my experience, so may not apply in thsi case (white Gt4) same warranty product name on the same make of car.
I bought a Porsche last year (privately) that had previously been sold by a non-Porsche dealership, it came with a 'platinum warranty'.
The warranty was from “The Warranty group’ now owned by Assurant (multi-billion $ global business), the product is used by many dealer groups, in my case, I think it was a Lexus dealership.
Cost to transfer was 2 emails and a £25 admin fee.

The car is fantastic, it is current circumstances forcing my arm.
change " fully wrapped" to PPF and drop the price £5k :-)

Ah, I read it to mean vinyl rap too on a cursory glance and was wondering why do it white!

Just saw this and thought of this thread.....600 miles and £66k!
https://www.ashgood.co.uk/vehicle-details/Used-Por...
Looks to be great spec.
If SOR, I guess the owner will be getting around £61k.
600 miles in 4 years, wondered if it has its 2 services, seem a real waste (lost out on the enjoyment of driving it and still lost chunk of money).
great track buy that, NO PCM or even a radio.
but a nice project track hack.
these are starting to look good value again sub £60k with less than 10k miles.

2020 10k miles, Guards red, PCCB, buckets, nice options (reversing camera, some carbon and climate) and under £83k at an official Porsche network.
Starting to look very tempting.
Looks expensive to me!
Why’s that?

This, along with a lot of others has been hanging around for a while now. The market has certainly slowed down.
It would be quite incredible if the sports car market hadn't slowed down the week before Christmas.
Even if that 20 20 plate red GT4 with 10k miles has high relative mileage and twice the average GT4 mileage for its age together with a high 3 owners it still looks a Christmas bargain particularly if you want ceramics.
Price adequately reflects three owners and the relatively high mileage and little market value ££ attributable to the overpriced ceramic brake option on new GT4s.

Why’s that?
It’s a 2020 manual car, with 10k miles and a few owners in a basic free colour and the ceramics would put me off due to their replacement cost if damaged.
Imo no value having ceramics on a gt4.
If the garage owns it I bet they wouldn’t have even given 70k trade for it.

10,000 miles?! Jeez, practically a right off!
My point is there are lower mileage cars available!
10k is nothing in terms of miles imo.
Mine's just ticked over 12k and it's better than ever.
Don't save them for the next owner, enjoy them now otherwise you'll kick yourself when they're gone.
Get the feeling certain posters are just trying to talk the price down. Stay calm spring is coming and drive a car you can afford and enjoy. The rest is white noise…
You do realise conversations on an internet forum won’t make a slight bit of difference to selling prices of a car, don’t you?
The market and economic climate will dictate that. Winter is a crap time to sell a car, that’s not in doubt, however, on top of that, the world is in economic meltdown and the free/cheap money train has long gone.
I don’t think the market will crash for GT cars, but I do feel it’ll soften, it already is.

Why would I need to talk gt4 prices down 🤦🏼♂️
Thought I’d revive this thread as I’ve just bought a speed yellow 981 GT4 CS.
(I read all 91 pages of the thread over Christmas in preparation!).
I’ve been driving various Lotus Elises, Exiges (inc 410 V6) and a 420R Caterham over the last 15 years and this is my first Porsche, so I’m excited to compare them to the GT4.
Only had a short drive today after it arrived (in between work and school runs) but flippin heck, initial impressions were excellent.
Very much looking forward to more time behind the wheel and getting to know the car.

I've had my white 981 GT4 CS for about 4 1/2 years now. Intent was to keep it for a very long time. That hasn't changed, I love it as much now as the day I got it.
Congratulations, I hope you have as much fun with yours as I have had with mine. Only thing I could possibly resent is the fuel consumption. But then I turn the exhaust to "loud" and let it run up through the revs in a couple of gears and realise it's really not that much of an issue.
Liam
Went out in it for 2 hrs today with a friend in his 997.1 GT3 and well, it’s pretty bloody spectacular.
Handling feels bang on, engine is strong and it sounds bloody lovely.
Only one small issue though, brakes feel a bit wooden, are RS29 pads still the go to for steel discs? Any recommendations for where to get some at a decent price?
Otherwise, what a thing…
Looks great Bandit. Would be interested to hear your thoughts compared to your Exige and 420r. Must admit I much prefer my 410 to my gt4. I’d love to try a 420R but I picked the Exige as it’s just that little bit more practical and I can use it.

Nice one. Glad you’re getting used to it. The 981 GT4 really are fun and sound alive out of the box.
For brakes… RS29 work well for steels yep. You do need to get into the pedal to get the real feel.

Race Yellow was the launch colour and a standard colour .... Porsche tend to choose carefully !
Congratulations
Having a look. Appears to be lots of low milage two owner cars appear for sale.
I love the Gentian Blue Metallic one at JZM but I swear its been for sale there before.
Is the price dropping or just correcting slightly from all the people who put a few k on them during shortages
So according to some prices are rising and good cars are over list on a 718 GT4 ?
Well here is a brand new car on 1/23 plate pdk and list!

No if you scroll down it gives you a link to the configurator spec. Lots of unnecessary extras though which boots up the price!
List is £99878 plus otr costs of £2100

Yes it is. With 10miles on the clock the first owner clearly hasn't driven it.
Flipper flipperoo...
All a bit odd. If it’s only got 10 miles on it, the first owner hasn’t even collected it.
Maybe the new higher finance rates and depreciation has put them off, if so they have lost money without even collecting it.
Alternatively it could be another unallocated car and been pre registered.

No need for apologies will all make mistakes, anyway I think the price looks high because of all the unnecessary extras which makes it appear as over list!
I saw that it was heavily loaded, and it was a fair bit more expensive than my car, so assumed it was over list. I hadn't realised the base price has gone up £5k+ since launch, and the price of some options up a little bit too...

Yup, there were at least 3 significant price rises between the tail end of 2021 and mid through Q1 of 2022. Before then I think there were the usual small annual price rises in 2020 and the start of 2021.
I ordered in Aug 21 and picked up Jul 22, in that time the total cost of my car OTR went up by £5200. Luckily I was protected to my original order price as it didn’t cross MY builds (the only time price rises impact a confirmed order).
Personally I think that even with the price rises, the GT4 still represents amazing VFM, if you can get the spec you want.

Same.
Mine is a 2020 car that would have cost the first owner just over £95k when new. I honestly have no idea how Porsche managed to get it out at that price point - they're either making little to bugger-all profit on this model, or other manufacturers are taking the piss with the price of their comparable offerings.

Take a look at the price of a base spec cayman, they’ll be making plenty of profit on that. The GT4 will be the most profitable car in the range.

Like the CaymanR/987 Spyder before Gt4s these cars have always represented fantastic value if purchased new.
I have ordered a new 911T at circa £105k but something like say Cayman 4.0Gts similar spec is £30k cheaper which probably cost the same to build!
Twinfan I subscribe to the less is more when adding on extras and something like a Gt4 only needs buckets adding for the driving experience! So in essence you could say that particular Gt4 is at overs because most of the extras added will not give you any more value come resale.

Tbh I doubt that very much bearing in mind the 718 GT4s GT3 chassis and ancilliaries etc and almost 'bespoke' engine which was developed solely just for the GT4 although the basics are clearly shared with the 'low' numbers 4.0 GTS.
Be interesting to know for sure.
Cayman’s and Boxsters I would say are the least profitable sports cars for Porsche with a Gt4 at the lower end of the profit scale. The big profits in the 911 especially something like a Turbo
To add they still most likely make a profit on a Gt4 but not as much per unit as say a base 911

Some of us don't buy and spec cars with resale in mind. Mine has as much tat in it as a tart's handbag and I wouldn't have specced it any other way. I really appreciate a good cabin, it makes the car far more special for me and I enjoy it all the more. The interior is what you see when you drive it, and I drive mine as much as I can.
Twinfan said:

I wasn’t angling at that I was merely pointing out that all a car like a GT4 needs is buckets for the driving experience. How you spec. a car new is personal. But an OPC when ordering a car in will chuck a load of frivolous extras on to load up the price as I believe they get some extras free for more profit.
So when I order a new cars extras I am looking for parts that add to the driving experience not the resale ie buckets and lights.
But with resale in mind a car specd to say £100k new may have no more value after 3 years than a new car costing £90k in the second hand market.

The Base-to-S spec Caymans make Porsche their money through high-volume sales.
The GT4 has enough bespoke components on it to justify the jump in purchase price - and the point I was trying to make is that I struggle to see how Porsche recoups the model-development / bespoke-component costs given the small numbers of GT4's produced.
I don't think there's much bespoke to be honest other than the rear wing, rear suspension assembly and cage if you have CS?
Front bumper, rear valance all shared with the Spyder (for 718 definitely, not sure for 981). Engine shared with the Spyder for the 981 and also the GTS for 718. Buckets are from the 991 series 911s and and 981 GT4 and Spyder. All the interior options are shared across most models, just the additional use of alcantara in a few places. Front end including brakes is lifted from the 991 GT3 on both GT4s, shared with the Spyder on 718s. Rear brakes also from the GT3.

Love that viper green one, if I wasn’t already in to buy a red one with 7k miles on it I would be ringing them too
Sure you have spotted this but they originally advertised it for £74.9k so they have increased the price in the last few days by £1k. Worth a negotiation maybe
