I actually got 7.5 litres out and so put 7.5 litres of 5W 40 Mobil s but I had no idea how to check and have now been into the car and done what you said but it has to be warm so did not allow me to check, I'll do so tomorrow.

I am changing the oil on my turbo 996 and wanted to know how much oil is the right amount as I can't find this answer anywhere.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi fellow Porsche nuts,
I am changing the oil on my turbo 996 and wanted to know how much oil is the right amount as I can't find this answer anywhere.
I have been told to empty the old oil and measure but that is not right as the car could have used oil.
Can anyone please help as I see no dipstick on this beast and it has no oil amount gauge although it does have oil pressure as the 996 C4 I had did.
This is a different beast and I can see not an easy one to work on.
Thank you in advance
Jools
The oil level gauge is on the On-Board Computer. Press the lever forward, scroll down to OIL, and press it again to start measurement. The engine must be hot, with the engine idling, on level ground.
The change quantity is 8.5 litres. The total capacity is 12.5 litres, but you can only drain about 8.5 litres, as the rest is in the cooler (at the front of the car) and in the pipework.
Drain the tank, crankcase, and turbo drains, and leave it draining for 20 minutes. Refit the plugs and put 8.5 litres in the tank. Run it up to temperature and then check the level.
Thank you so very much for this comprehensive answer, I actually tried to drain at the turbos but the nuts are too tight for me and a couple of other mechanics so I don't know what else to do on that but did drain on 2 points at tank and crank.

Thanks again mate, what a star you are.

The turbo catch tanks don't hold a lot of oil, so if you only got 7.5 litres out, I expect it will need topping up by about a litre. You should have enough in there to run it up to temperature though.
Oil check
Did precisely as you said and it did need another half a litre.
This car is a beast, I don;t know why anoyone would want to remap the ECU !! it is more than enough for me. The surger I feel when the turbos kick in is superb and I feel like a kiddy again.
I had a Millenium edition C4 before but it is nothing like this. It is a late December 2002 996 TT in polar silver with GT2 wing, looks mean and low down. I feel happy with it.
I will only keep this oil for 1000 miles and then replace again, I need to know my car and what it is running on. I will then change every 3000.
What a car, I never believe a bloke like me, from working class, would own one of the worlds premier supercars
Thanks for your help :thumb:
