Interesting, even on my twelve month old car the hubs are starting to rust, there must be an answer, other than replacing discs that are in effect fine.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

My turbo is starting to show signs of rust on the wheel hubs which are pretty unsightly and obvious through the alloys.
Has anyone any suggestions for cleaning these, ideally with some degree of protection from future rust. Or is is a case of cleaning, masking off and respraying?
Thanks in advance!
Are they actually rusting? Tread carefully, can't speak from experience I just got new discs instead, personally if I did this it would be done with a brush to avoid spraying paint anywhere near the car body or any brake parts. You would need a VHT paint (Very High Temp) otherwise it will just come off.
DO NOT paint the face of the hub. If you do you run the risk of having wobbly wheels, the paint could soften with heat and cause the bolts to be loose.

My 993 discs are fine but rusty on the hub. Cant see the point in replacing as if anything they could be re skimmed. They have plenty of thickness.
Someone must have re painted? When discs are re skimmed they do paint them too.
On genuine Porsche discs the bells are painted light grey and tend not to rust, they just discolour a little. Nige this is the easiest way to tell if discs are genuine or aftermarket.
The paint doesn't need to be VHT, Hammerite smooth works fine and can be sprayed on straight over the rust. Mask up well before painting but don't worry if you get a little on the edge of disc surface as the pads will clean it off the first time you use them.
Id agree Chris, yet the bells on my 22K VW golf are rusty after 11 months, and its a very common problem on many new cars, reading other forums.
On cars that stand alot it has to be normal? Anyway im going to try the hammerite, in light grey.
Its spoiling my lovely new alloys and tyres
Cheers guys. Wouldnt dream of letting any paint on the face of the hub where the wheels mount for obvious wheel alignment reasons (my car really didnt appreciate small spacers let alone paint blobs). Will check out the hammerite. Much tricky masking I fear!
I think we are talking about the hubs not discs??
I hand painted mine with an off Silver/grey hammerite!
Looks great through Sport Classic spokes.
It seems a common problem with all of these hubs on lots of cars .. oddly, sadly and annoyingly!!
Chris W came up with a good word, Bells! Id call them hubs, basically part of the disc.
For obvious reasons not the face, this is easy to clean and remove rust/crap- And cant be seen by even the most OCD owner.
Hammerite smooth is very good on rust, and covering smoothly on surfaces that are not brllliant. Ill give it a go.
Short term fix, some nice shiny new ones are the long term solution.
Its panning out nicely-
OCD under wing clean, new adjustable shocks, new bushes, new discs and pads. This crazy 993 OCD has a grip now. Is this normal :?: :dont know:
silver hammerite smooth, didn't bother masking anything...in fact even considered leaving the wheel on (I'm kidding), just get amongst it and don't be scared of a bit of paint
Ps I noticed a 2009 Jaguar XF in the car park this morning with really heavily rusted hubs...looked terrible...not just porsches then.
Seriously I would be masking as much as possible, spray paint hangs in the air and will bond to everything and anything. Even though you are painting inside the arch you'll end up getting paint on windows, on rubber seals and all sorts. If you have a silver car its less visible of course.
Why would you knowingly want to risk getting paint on all sorts of things when 2 minutes of careful taping, a carrier bag here and there and an old bedsheet over the wing protects your pride and joy??
Can you take some before and after shots? dont recall seeing any of this work before.
ill take some photos, i intend to mask off well, jack the car up. Give the face a really good clean and fettle, then rotate the disc to spray all around.
Just had a look at one thats been done on a local 993, looks good as new to be honest.
One point though silver or grey :?:
Another vote for hamerite smooth.
As another OCD owner, there is actually very little other than the caliper to mask off and given that with the handbrake off, the disks will rotate, there isnt a need to mask that
Also hamerite for the whel studs, get a piece of wood , drill lots of holes in it, wire brush hte heads, wipe with solvent cleaning wipe and paint carefully, then wait for wife to go out and pop on oven door at gas mark 1 for 30 mins or leave on top of radiator for an hour and they look great !
hammerite smooth silver looks great, hubs do rotate away from caliper just be careful to chock the wheels when you have the back end up and are out of gear with handbrake off!, wheel nuts do look good with hammerite silver too, while wheels are off you may want to wax the inside flange/dish to reduce dust build up. Should also consider re-laquering calipers, which by the way I also didn't bother masking anything off before hand!, mine looks great, good luck!
