Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Guys, i had a 964, which i sold due to redundancy, now i need to get back in the saddle and feel its a good opportunity to go for an upgrade! ive looked at the 996 and i see many for sale around 12000-13000 and they are only around 12 years old. what do you think? is there a reason for this and with the 996, what do i need to be careful of? thanks!!! chris

Re: going from a 964 to a 996........help with prices please Hi, Congrats for being able to get back in the saddle. I had to sell my last last Porsche due to financial reasons & couldn't wait to get my next 1. 6 months I lasted  There are indeed some bargain 996's around at the moment. It is a hell of a lot of car for that money. I believe these low prices are largely due to the numbers of 996's that were produced being allot higher than the amount of 964's & 993's that were made. More cars on the market meaning lower 996 residuals. There were also a small percentage of early 996's that suffered engine issues. There is lot's of info. on this site about these issue's. These issues may seem more common than they actually are by reading internet horror stories & I think the actual % of cars affected was only around 5%. Try & go for a car that's been enthusiast owned with full Porsche SH & lots of paperwork so you can see the car has been well cared for. I would advise to get a good PPI done as well. You also need to budget a certain amount annually for any bills thay you may experience on the car. I think it's muted that around 2k should normally cover this. These cars aren't cheap to repair if they do go wrong. But what Porsche is?? I would say, buy on condition & try & buy from an enthusiast. Get a PPI done so you know the cars faults but you can also use this as a bargaining tool. Budget enough for running costs... But ultimately GO FOR IT & Enjoy :thumb: They are quite a machine for the money :worship: Keep us posted on progress & remember to post pics Adam

Agree with all the above. Particularly getting a PPI. The reason the prices, even for really good cars, are quite low (considering the amount of car you are getting) is a combination of the sheer numbers produced , so a significant oversupply, and a partly justified concern about engine issues. The good news is that it seems to be generally accepted that once a car gets over about 70k miles with no problems then it will probably be good for many thousands more. And in any case specialists such as Autofarm and Hartech now have fixes for the problems. So get a PPI and be extra vigilant about oil in coolant, coolant in oil and over pressurised cooling system. All are possible symptoms of the engine weakness. But equally could be something else. Other than that find a nice car , buy it and enjoy it.

POST 4Original post

Does the number of owners come into it? Like a 2000 car that has had 6 owners seems a lot but i suppose the 911 is a dream car so once someone has had it they move on? Or is it just a lemon that keeps breaking? Also like you say a 1998 911 can be picked up for 13k, the highest mileage id go for is about 70k thats just my sort of limit, i know its a rubbish idea you should go on condition but its got to have lots of general wear at the sort of mileage, bushes etc

POST 5Original post

Not sure if its an upgrade or just somet different... Guess it depends on intented mileage/type of use. I had a 964 C2 previously and absolutely loved it... I just bought it to get it out my system, realised the intended use was all wrong and sold it it for 996 C4S insted. I would buy it back as a weekend toy in a heartbeat though! Very different experience - much beter in some respects but no where near as 'liveable'. A 996 is a good choice for every day driving though IMO. 
