I'm researching the possibility of installing an
iPad
Mini in my dash as the head unit. I have the fiber optic
Bose system
and I have the Most HUR adapter. There are several car stereo installers who have already done this (not in a
Cayman
). One in particular has done many
Porsche
installations with the Most HUR, not with
iPad
Mini's. They believe they can do it.
The
iPad
Mini is almost the exact dimensions of the space between the side panels which makes it a tough squeeze. So they are going to build an enclosure that fits over the front of everything including the side panels (There will be matching leather strips). Looking from the front you will assume that's the way it came from the factory. You then slide the
iPad
Mini into the enclosure from the right, so that it will be removable. When out there is a black mesh visible, not just an open hole.
I like this concept as its almost like having your
iPhone
in front of you and you don't have any of these safety features bugging the heck out of you. They say I will have hands-free Bluetooth. With the
iPad
Mini GPS version and data plan you have everything available to you that your
iPhone
has minus the phone. But that's addressed through the Bluetooth integration.
Any updates for this?
I'm going to do something similar, but using a Nexus 7. I have sound plus instead of
Bose
, so I'm likely going to just scrap the OEM HU, amp and speakers and build an entire system around the N7.
I already have a DAC and EQ selected. Now just need to settle on Class D amp and speakers.
What do you use for AM/FM radio or do you just skip those and use Pandora or some other web radio stations? I'd miss AM/FM as there are some local talk radio shows I enjoy that aren't on the web. I would think the Nexus 7 would be a better fit than the
ipad
mini for this type of application though.
I haven't made any progress, lost steam during the Holidays. I'm going to get on it now. You can get any radio station you want over the internet, which is available with the
iPad
Mini. You'll end up with GPS, email, contacts, iPod, and any app available which includes Pandora, iHeart and a bunch of other music apps.
I'm currently on the fence between installing either a single-din stereo plus a horizontally aligned
iphone
mount directly underneath it or an
ipad
mini.
I have a feeling that the
ipad
install is going to be more complicated due to having to work around not having a headunit.
I don't care much for e-mail. My main motivation is Harry's LT and
Waze
.
The shop that did this install are semi-local to me...

though the car owner here kept his headunit.
Going to be an interesting year. What I really want is a device that will automatically connect to my phone (no need for wires), be able to find my music and contacts, provide me with good GPS and hands-free phone, and not have to deal with any safety function someone else believes I need. The
iPad
Mini if it can be well integrated meets this. Well
Kenwood
may have also just introduced my solution:

Kenwood
Only problem is the price, but I don't know what it will cost me to integrate the iPad Mini. By the way the guy I'm working with, who is at CES right now, says he almost has a bullet proof iPad Mini installation kit ready. I sent him pictures of my consul with a temp-let for the enclosure. When I spoke with him he was heading to Kenwood's booth to meet and look at their new models.
Holy sticker shock.
have you looked at mp3car.com? there a lot of options. really depends on what you want to do.
I am curious if anyone knows of any installers in the Toronto, Canada area that have installed a tablet (
IPad
Mini or Nexus 7) into
Porsche Cayman
's?
I am differently interested in having a tablet installed in my car. Only for
Waze
and music.
However, how would this handle Blu-tooth?
It can be done... I'm working on mine now. It's a 997 but it's pretty much the same interior than your car:

Wow, that fits really well. How is the N7 supposed to be a better fit?
Wow that's great. I knew it could be done. I member of that forum as well. I'm going to contact Joe and get the specifics.
Any updates on this?
Considering that a decent head unit cots 1100> it might make sense to do this...
That looks awesome!
The google maps app is headed to the app store soon on
iPad
. If it has talking directions, like the
iPhone
version, it should solve that problem.
What I'm interested in though, are the Kenwoods that were announced at CES. Built in wifi? If done right, that could be a great new option, especially for vehicles with a back seat, given the second screen features.
I like the
Kenwood
's with WiFi. They are pricey, $1,700 & $1,300 retail. I see a couple of advantages to a Mini and or N7, they are upgrade-able with some new latest and greatest app and they are in essence a computer. However I think the new
Kenwood
's have access to apps and they have everything I want already engineered into them (and I assumed tested) and backed by
Kenwood
. You could really have some issues the Mini/N7 route without the engineering. I do have an installer that says he has worked through all the issues. It will be interesting to see he he wants for all that.

Got all the parts painted back from bumper plugs... I will start this weekend... it's looking sharp!!!!
Very nice!! Can't wait to see it all done!
Looking forward to seeing this and your overall experience:dance:
I have a question... how are you going to handle Bluetooth for hands free calling? Is their a solution for this? Sorry if it was already covered.
Im pretty much done with my
ipad
mini install myself and must say Joe has been very patient and helpful with all my questions so far:cheers:
These are the latest pictures. Installation is completed!
What equalizer app is that?? I finished wiring mine all up and am about to yank it out in favor of a
pioneer
head unit. Sound quality is pretty pior from the
ipad
. Im using all of the same equipment as my previous
porsche
with the exception of the head unit and i am super unhappy.
the app is called "equalizer" if you don't place a pre-amp with at least 300w, the sound will suck. I'm streaming music thru Bluetooth and the sound is great! and I have muffler bypass and 200 x pipes!
Please enlighten me as to what pre amp you are using. I used the audiocontrol 3.2 with built in preamp however i couldnt find anything preamp rated in wattage but rather line voltage.
I guess that any
amazon
car amp would do:

or this one too:

Is anyone develpoing a "Dash Kit?" or anything
Also can you provide a link to how yours looks when putting in the
ipad
and with out it in?
Ive loved this idea ever since i saw this posted months ago,

I don't have any pictures, but this is pretty much what you need to do:
Remove carpeted ends on the front of the rear main console (or dash)
Remove two screws (on each) to remove the 2 side bolsters for the center dash
Remove one silver screw on the pass side on the PCM
Unlock the cam locks on the side of the PCM
Pull the PCM out and unplug the AM antenna, FM antenna, Fiber Optic and double box plugs.
Prepare the Radio Adapter loom with this connection sequence:
From first plug: (from the car)
rear:
purple: rear right +
purple/black: rear right -
green: rear left +
green black: rear left -
front:
white: rear right +
white/black: rear right -
gray: rear left +
gray black: rear left -
From second plug: (from the car)
black: ground
yellow: switched power
blue/white: amp control. you need to have this connected to switched power for the door speakers to work.
Get the switched power from fuse slot C6 and run it from the fuse box to behind the PCM. Euromotorsports provide you with this long cable.
Connect your loom adapter's cables to the pre amp.
Depending on how do you want it to control your music/volume, you will use the dock adapter to a USB friendly Pre-Amp (iStreamer) or any other device that supports it, or use the 3.5mm headphone plug for audio out to the pre-amp. You could also use the bluetooth streaming connection using the belkin part. then connect the belkin to the pre-amp.
hook everything up and test.
if everything is ok, you now proceed to install the iPad.
The iPad fits against the center dash frame, no need to modify this. you will only need to take out a little rectangular area from your passenger side dash's bolster in order for the right angle to go in. The iPad is literally held in place by the pressure of the two panels. trust me. it won't move.
Now, the bezel:
Once you got your hands on the Radio Elimination kit you will cut the whole shelf part and leave the bezel only. It's pretty much 1/4" what you are going to be using but cut a little bit more because you will need to flat sand the bezel part so it will fit flush against the iPad's screen.
To keep the bezel from falling, you will place two magnets that will align with the iPad's magnets created for the smart cover.
Now, for the home button activation:
You could do a multi gesture command to get to the home page but I discovered a new way without messing up the bezel finish by drilling a hole:
I placed a rubber nub which is barely 1mm deeper than the bezel. This now rests on top of the recessed home button, so the bezel sits flush and with the most sensitive push on the bezel's area where the home button is underneath, you can go back to the home screen. works like a charm (as seen on the video)
shortcomings:
You lose 3 pixels at the top of the iPad's screen.
Volume control is a little cumbersome unless you use a dedicated app to control it
You are better getting the 4G version and scrap the 4G hotspot
You can remove the iPad but it will take the removal of one of the side panels.
The bezel covers the front facing camera, but the bezel can be removed in 1 second, thanks to the use of magnets.
Have any of you guys checked out Soundman on YouTube, these dudes have some really creative ideas of mounting iPads, some with releasing magnetic mounting.
Unfortunately installing that way is not hard wired to anything, no charging. I assume it's working through Bluetooth.

I started this thread but have made very little progress. Every installer I've spoken with tells me they can do this and then does not follow through. Jeolpirela has successfully installed a system (fantastic) but it involves more work and modifications to the original system than I want. I really am looking for a plug and play. So I ran across Parrots new Asteroid Smart and started a new thread:
