I quite frankly couldn't care about the lack of downforce, or adjusting the suspension and doubt it'll make any difference on a good A or B road.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hypothetically, would any of those people with a guaranteed slot for a GT4 swap it for a guaranteed slot for a 981 Spyder?

POST 2Original post

POST 3Original post

I had deposits for both in a ton of dealerships. When I got my GT4 allocation, I pulled all my other deposits, including the Spyder ones.

POST 4Original post

I certainly would not and would think it unlikely that others would. No harm in asking though.

POST 5Original post

Most Spyder slots seem to be failed GT4 orders so I doubt it.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks - to be clear, I wouldn't swap the other way (from Spyder to GT4 as I don't like coupes.. Just seeing what the general opinion was...

POST 7Original post

2010spy said: Is that correct. They are very different cars, are they not? Spyders most critically do not have the GT4 suspension/subframes (which are GT3/911 Cup up front, GT3-derived out back), nor GT3 brakes (Spyders have Carrera S brakes). Spyders are simply an evolution of the "Sport Chassis"/X73 Sport Suspension available as an option on all Boxsters and Caymans. Aero is different as well, so it should produce less downforce at speed. Also different wheels and normal tires on the Spyder, instead of Pilot Sport Cup 2s.

POST 10Original post

I'd thought hard about changing, being a soft top person. I've decided to stick with the gt4- it having the more bespoke engineering. Here's hoping it can cope with British B roads, that's my biggest concern. Though I do wonder how the boxster copes from a rigidity point of view with x73 on our back roads.

POST 11Original post

If the Spyder is the sum total of a Boxster GTS + 45 HP - a little bit of weight, then I'd expect it to be a brilliant road car. The last Spyder wasn't a full on Motorsports developed car either, but it was a damn good car to drive. I loved mine. I quite frankly couldn't care about the lack of downforce, or adjusting the suspension and doubt it'll make any difference on a good A or B road. Each to their own, but my opinion is that those who've secured a GT4 or a Spyder are very lucky folk indeed.

Beaver said: Also..isn't the Spyder being built in smaller numbers, and therefore likely to be much rarer than the GT4? lights fuse, stands back Very true. Only 1 to 2 Spyders per UK OPC and a lot rarer than the GT4. A niche car for sure. Whilst being nowhere close to the brilliance of the GT3, the GT4 will clearly be the better track car compared to the Spyder, but in the real world on UK driving roads there is likely to be little in it.....

Hardly. GT4 has the GT3 brakes and FRONT suspension. That's all. No more. Boggo 3.8 Carrera engine like the Spyder. As you know the Spyder has the Carrera brakes, no cost sports suspension, steering same as GT4, no cost buckets etc etc. Hardly a GTS.

POST 25Original post

Not really, I think the 981 Spyder sits a bit in no mans land now. The GT4 is more hard core and has all the trick parts. And the 987.2 Spyder is lighter, has hydraulic steering and is quite a raw toy, very driver focused. the 981 seems to have all the worse bits from the old car and adds the worse bit from a 981 and now the worse bits from a 991 and no trick GT3 bits. the roof is still noddy esp now you cannot even open the boot with the roof on, it has electric steering, electric hand brake, I guess over servo brakes, sub 20 mpg, and a high tax band, more weight, less sexy lines, 85 mph 2nd gear, no 918 seats and a fat arse :-) the old car was like driving a hi power Elise hence why I love mine, I still own it and it has circa 300bhp/ton and adjustable sus now, it's awesome. imo the 981 SPyder should have been a tech fest with electric R8 style roof and PDK-s to make it a fun road car, but in a different way to the 987.2 is it will never be raw like the old car. If it had full electric roof and pdk-s I would have been all over it as a daily, as it stands I would rather find a nice £60k 2nd hand R8 manual Cab or spend £25k less on a 987.2 Spyder. when I say 987.2 raw I am not talking Caterham, Elise, 996 RS etc, but as raw as I want to go these days at 45 years old but still 100% fun. any way that's just my view on it, some say the daft roof still makes the 981 raw and people will avoid it for a normal GTS, some have said this.

POST 26Original post

Well well well.........a final admission from Mr D PDK S makes a car fun!! We rest our cases!!! Interesting that you mock the Spyder for its electric steering electric handbrake and tallish gear ratios.......same as the GT4. I have always found the 991 Carrera brakes to be excellent incidentally. You also state it is heavier than the 987.....correct..... but the 981 Spyder is still lighter than the GT4 and consequently economy will probably be better.

PorscheGT4 said: Not really, I think the 981 Spyder sits a bit in no mans land now. The GT4 is more hard core and has all the trick parts. Bit like a Cayman R vs 987 Spyder? I happen to think the 981 also looks a million times better than the awkward looking 987. All guises. I did not say PDK-s was fun, I said the 981 should have taken another direction as it will NOT be as fun to drive as the old car,so make it a tech fest with trick electric roof and PDK-S to set it apart from the old car. Nearly every single time I go on this forum there is always someone dictating their own version of the English language, a complete lack of reality and quite frankly some of biggest load of complete s te I've ever come across. Take a new Spyder 981 with PCCB's and a GT4 with PCCB's with the same tyres round a circuit and see what the difference is. To most it will be f k all. The laptimes are frankly irrelevant unless of course someone is going to bet some serious money, and then it will come down to the driver. So please wind in your egos, the Spyder for me is a nice quick sports car for a sunny day, it represents superb value, looks better to me at least than the 987, and I dont gives two s ts about the electric steering or whatever else is in the bloody car, as long as I can turn the traction off I'm happy. If you want to go faster simply buy something else!

PorscheGT4 said: Not really, I think the 981 Spyder sits a bit in no mans land now (faster and newer than the old 987 Spyder, but slower than the hardtop Cayman GT4) . The GT4 is more hard core and has all the trick parts, (as it's more track focused. I have one on order so need to talk it up before flipping it). And the 987.2 Spyder is lighter, has hydraulic steering and is quite a raw toy, very driver focused, I'm keeping my 987 Spyder so must talk it up . T t he 981 seems to have all the worse bits from the old car (now I'm saying the 987.2 Spyder has bad bits) and adds the worse bit from a 981 and now the worse bits the more powerful Carrera S engine from a 991 that everyone wanted fitting to the Boxster/Cayman platform and no trick GT3 bits (because it's primarily a fun road car) . T t he roof is still noddy (talking my 987.2 Spyder down again) esp now you cannot even open the boot with the roof on, it has electric steering, electric hand brake, I guess (because I have never driven it, so don't actually know) over servo brakes, sub 20 mpg, and a high tax band, more weight, less sexy lines [b](although more people prefer the basic 981 to the 987) , 85 mph 2nd gear, no 918 seats and a fat arse :-) the old car was like driving a hi power Elise hence why I love mine, I still own it and it has circa 300bhp/ton and adjustable sus now, it's awesome (but I've had to modify it to make it awesome and I'm afraid the new 981 Spyder might be better out of the box, with no need for modifications) . imo the 981 SPyder should have been a tech fest with electric R8 style roof and PDK-s (note sure why I said that as I always state I hate PDK) to make it a fun road car, but in a different way to the 987.2 is it will never be raw like the old car. If it had full electric roof and pdk-s I would have been all over it as a daily (unlikely as I'd have had to sell my Cayman R which is untouchable , as it stands I would rather find a nice £60k 2nd hand R8 manual Cab or spend £25k less on a 987.2 Spyder (must keep promoting the 987 Spyder - £25k off £65k is err £40k, and £25k off £70k is err £45k...don't I keep saying they're worth £50k) . when I say 987.2 raw (better add this in incase people suggest just getting a proper raw car like a Caterham) I am not talking Caterham, Elise, 996 RS etc, but as raw as I want to go these days at 45 years old but still 100% fun. any way that's just my view on it, some say the daft roof still makes the 981 raw (must stop putting the 987 Spyder roof down, the 981 Spyder roof operation looks much better - otherwise my 987 Spyder will be worthless when I want to sell it) and people will avoid it for a normal GTS (actually they won't because they can't buy a Spyder , some have said this (and some haven't) .
