Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Disconnect leads an am now charging in isolation' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'good idea' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Disconnect battery' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

A new Bosch Silver battery is probably a good idea.

You need to put the key in the ignition to stop the alarm from going off when you disconnect the battery.

But if you get a charger these can be run from the cigarette lighter, it will take a day, but works and is easier than opening the bonnet ever time you want to charge the battery.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Help... I have left the car (98-996) for 4 weeks ony to try and start it today. Sadly not only do the internal door lights not come on when i manually unlock the car but i also only get 2 very faint lights on the dash when i try to start. So i have a very flat battery. Given that i manually unlocked the car and that there is not enough energy to start the car i cannot unlock the bonnet or boot to either charge or jump start the car. So my question is how do i manually release the bonnet or boot?
Any help greatly appreciated. Peter

Peter it can be done manually there was a thread on this a while ago. I will try and find it for you.

Well the good news is that it worked. Mark Pearce's advice was sound but what a nitemare of a job, i recon it was a gud hours job to get latch released with the screwdriver. The battery is so low that it doesnt even register on the tricle charger so iv had to disconnect the battery and put it on a normal charger. I did note thatwhen i connected the charger up to the connected battery that the car alarm went of so i disconnected both leads an am now charging in isolation. im guessing that when i reconnect the battery the alarm wil go off. is this correct?
I really appreciate your help
Peter

You need to put the key in the ignition to stop the alarm from going off when you disconnect the battery. Also, if you have a tracker on your car, it's battery will be running out soon too.

The alarm ony went off when i attached the charger. Do i take it that there is a seperate battery for the alarm or will it rely on a discharge mechanism?

i did indeed and the car started this morning. I think the battery must be knackered tho as the voltage drops competely when i start the car and the returns to just under 14v. Would you agree that its a prob or shud i just leave it on trickle charge for a few days?

A new Bosch Silver battery is probably a good idea. Especially if you don't drive all the time. The trickle charger will keep it in top condition all the time.
It is normal for the voltage to drop to around 10v when you turn the ignition.

Fish for release under LEFT (looking at engine lid) lamp cluster
Feel (or using torch, look!) for release behind RIGHT headlamp (looking at front of car) in cavity behind passenger side wheel arch liner.
NOTE: Facelifts (electronic release) swapped the side for front release (so LHS looking at front of car).
Or just pets (see attached)

Cheers GT4
but im still a bit confused, how do i find the wire to open the Bonnet if its behind the light, and i need the bonnet open to release the front headlight?
Im probably being really dim!
Kind Regards
Edward
Turn the lights on then!
Seriously, though, the cable is BEHIND the lamp in the cavity BEHIND the wheel arch liner. Turn the wheel away to make it easier to get to rivets and peel back liner (only need to pull the three/four outside rivets).
If you can't get to it via the lamp, guess the other option. :?:
The centre pin plastic rivets just prize out (pull up centre pin with long nosed pliers/screwdriver and they "shrink" to release).
Look a bit like this:
The cable loop should be behind and under the black lamp assembly locking "table".
NOTE: these are electronic release examples (so prefacelifts are the other side, but mirror image)
