Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion
Obviously if the car needs a new clutch fitting a new RMS and IMS seal (and inspecting their general health) is a no-brainer.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi All going to take a look at a 50000 miles 996 Carrera 4S 2002 (52) with sat nav and dealer service and specialist. Can anybody tell me what to look out for. Many, Many Thanks
Best to get a proper PPI done but failing that....
Oil leaks from RMS/IMS area under engine
Coolant level (should be at max)
Oil in coolant
Coolant in oil
Brake disc wear
Rust on inside face of brake discs
Suspension clonks and rattles.
Tyres and tyre wear pattern
Check aircon works well (front condesors corrode)
Accident damage/ repainting
History
Others will add more I am sure...
Conversely, if you take the oil filler cap off and see some "mayonnaise" - which would be a warning sign on most cars - don't panic. They nearly all seem to do that, based on threads on here.
Car looked fantastic, but on last service advisory for Main oil seal and slight leak from water pump.It is not dropping oil and found no trace of water under engine though it was a bit difficult to see. Been quoted 850 inc clutch for oil seal and around 5 hrs for water pump and 240 to buy pump.
Has anyone else found any water pump issues, i know main seal is prone.
Thanks
I found this document really useful when I was looking for my C4S. I walked away from one because it needed new rads, discs and pads all round and I thought the clutch was on its way out.
In 9/10 cases I would probably be more worried about the water pump.
The RMS seals, even when new, are lucky to seal 100% for any decent period without "misting". (if case halfs are not well matched any number of RMS seals will not seal perfectly)
It is suggested to ignore slight RMS mistings as a new one may even seat less well - as a case of better the devil you know.
Obviously this "ignore" response is once any other causation (IMS etc)
has been ruled out, which may require more immediate TLC.
Also note that many OPCs will routinely add "RMS" to an inspection as it is a nice little earner.
You need the RMS independently verified or just another (trusted) OPC's second opinion.
Obviously if the car needs a new clutch fitting a new RMS and IMS seal (and inspecting their general health) is a no-brainer.
Plus ifan OPC does it (or reputable indy) you will (should) get a decent warranty to cover if it requires remedial work to seal again
